Did you think Augeri was always a poor singer? Or just when he began to have vocal probs?

Just curious.

To be fair, they have probably gained a new Fillipino fanbase.

Not even close. Arnel is head and shoulders a better singer than Augeri and is not a clone on the new material. Augeri sounded like an injured Steve Perry. Pineda actually sings some parts of the ballads a half step up from Perry. When could Augeri ever do that???

Do you mean to say every Walmart consumer checked Arnel live in concert or watched 'Ellen' before weighing their buying decision?
What little promotional materials existed for "Arrival," like the Direct TV concert, showed Augeri hitting those stratospheric high notes with ease, so what's the difference?

And the general public has no idea who Arnel Pineda is, yet he currently sings on one of the best selling albums in the country.
Did "Revelation" really move all those units on the back of Arnel's god-given talents, despite nobody knowing who the fuck he is?

What's the big deal about placing so much emphasis on how high a singer can sing? So tenor 2's, Baritones, and basses can't sing? That's ridiculous.

Saint John wrote:lol...Paul Rodgers is a legendary frontman with 2 largely successful bands on his resume...not to mention millions of albums moved. The general music listening public has no idea who Soto is.

The general music listening public has no idea who Pineda is either. Why must you bag on JSS so much? The guy will forever have a thousand times more talent than you or I ever will musically. The biggest reason for Journey's success is the Wal*Mart deal. If they had such a deal with Augeri or JSS as singer, the same thing would be happening. It's all marketing.

Ellen, CBS Sunday morning, GQ magazine and a few other cameos have sure as shit allowed people to hear Arnel, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive. But keep up the excuses. They're entertaining. I find it ironic that someone who was watching Cartoon Network during the early Augeri years is giving me a history lesson.

People know who he is. I've had friends that have tarred and feathered me for years for being a Journey fan tell me "Journey has a fucking Filipino singer?!?!?" And then when they hear him they generally shut the fuck up. Try it sometime.

I could stand on a box and try.

You didn't answer my question earlier, SJ. I think it got buried among all the replies........
Did you always think Augeri was a poor singer, or just when he started to have vox probs?

I wasn't keen on the albums he sang on but I liked him well enough. And I love Higher Place & Faith In The Heartland.

Just wondered did you never care for him?
I mean the poor material during his tenure wasn't his fault, was it?
:?

It's what the fans are used to. Unless it's Steve Perry up there singing (in which case range wouldn't matter) the fans want to hear the sound they're used to.

Yeah, ok. Any 30+ year old band can put an album in Wal mart and keep it in the Top 10 for 3 weeks...riiight. I suppose the people from The New York Times, GQ, Ellen, and the CBS Sunday Morning Show are all Wal Mart employees and/or shareholders. And just where was this prophecy before all of the success? Get the fuck outta here.

But wouldn't they have got all of that even if Arnel wasn't singing lead?
Don't forget the airing of DSB on The Sopranos raised Journey's profile big time. That alone could have generated a lot of sales of the new album.

I liked him quite a bit actually, but you know what...looking back I think it was more so because I got to see Journey continue to perform, he was so darn nice in person, and I have a lot of great memories of the shows. But going back and looking at even his first 2 years I have to admit that he's only somewhere between "above average" and "good."

Fair enough.
And a lot of the songs on the two albums he was involved in aren't exactly brilliant, are they - if we really examine them.

The only thing the world saw was a run of the mill singer blowing his top at a guy that stated facts and well formed opinions about him and his career. I have never called him one name...ever. But per his interview "It was time for me to just kind of lay low and just get back to work and not really care or think about what people thinking and talking about." Except for me of course!!!

Exactly, and not to go round and round with you on this again, but you do have a tendency to prefer singers with the high tenor voices. Everybody has different criteria for what they like in vocals. While I'll agree nobody can touch Perry's voice, who are you to call the likes of me disillusioned because I dare breath the words Soto or Martin in the same sentence as Perry? 3 different vocal tones, and when it comes to delivering with "soul" they are ALL right up there in my books! :)
