Man, did this (dead) thread explode. I'm not going to comment because I'm already on Andrew's bad side. I'm trying to get on his good side again. Or maybe for the first time, get on his good side.

Exactly, and not to go round and round with you on this again, but you do have a tendency to prefer singers with the high tenor voices. Everybody has different criteria for what they like in vocals. While I'll agree nobody can touch Perry's voice, who are you to call the likes of me disillusioned because I dare breath the words Soto or Martin in the same sentence as Perry? 3 different vocal tones, and when it comes to delivering with "soul" they are ALL right up there in my books! :)

And I'm sure you will agree with me Deb, I said this in another thread somewhere on here today, but the difference between someone who can sing and a great singer is that they both can sing, but with a great singer, you don't so much HEAR it as FEEL it.

If a singer's voice stirs something within you, then that makes them a great singer to you.
And we're all different.

But I think most of us have been stirred by Perry.

I soooooo get that. I think Arnel is a fabulous singer, very close to Perry's vocal tone.........he's going to do great in Journey. I'm just not feeling it, I like vocals that when you're listening to a song.......a certain line will be delivered in such a way that just makes you go WOW! I love songs with soaring vocals like on Still They Ride or JSS/Talisman's Back 2 The Feeling.

Jeff's show in San Francisco at the Independent. He mentioned it in Drew's interview:

"I've got a couple shows coming up next week in California.
One's a festival in San Francisco. It's a progressive rock festival of all things. I don't know what I'm doing on that but I'm headlining it. In fact it's gonna be fun because probably for the last time in a long time I'm gonna be mixing up more of the rock set and putting in more of the heavy stuff and especially stuff that I haven't done in the last few years musically and from my past.

And of course, as it's been promoted I've got Eric Martin and Dave and Phil from Y&T coming up to do maybe some Y&T and some Mr Big stuff coming and jam with the band so it's gonna be a fun thing in California and I'm probably gonna be shooting some live footage from that and some exterior stuff and some piecing together some videos with Gary since he's done a lot of my videos in the past."

And almost every fan who was hoping for a new energized Journey has given up on that. The fan base has remained the same, consisting of people who only like the classic sound. Nothing wrong with that either...

No offense, but I went to a Journey show during the JSS time period. Not one of my group of friends that went to the show knew who JSS was, or could tell you his name today. He was just a guy that filled in for the guy that was sick that sounded like Perry. As far as the second half of that statement, you are probably correct that the legacy sound is what is driving sales, and attention.

How exactly did GQ, a magazine, enable people to hear Arnel?
The Ellen show was a subpar performance, and the CBS show played clips from a dvd.

How does this in any way differ from the Augeri clips of Vegas 2001 that were played on Direct TV, Access Hollywood, and VH1 BTM in the lead up to "Arrival"?

Saint John wrote:But keep up the excuses. They're entertaining.

And you posses the unlocking Rosetta stone as to why Revelation has burned up the charts?
They are adhering to the exact same publicity approach that spelled their failure in 2001.
The only difference is, aside from the firesale Wmart price, is the DVD clips this time out show a frontman even less surefooted and even more awkward – if such a thing is imaginable.

That is to say, there is a Steve Perry clone singing for Journey.

If you think Arnel sounds like, or tried to sound like, Perry on Revelation well then this conversation is over. The fact that he has the ability to mimic him live and be his own voice on original stuff is a testament to his abilities...not a detriment.

And aside from the Whoa-oh-Whoa Sam Cooke-ism found on "All the Way," Augeri didn't sound all that much like Perry...at least not nearly as much as Arnel. Jeremey has already confirmed that the band was looking for someone to sound as close to Perry as possible (as if there was ever any doubt), so this is pointless.

Who has ever said such? All of his fans recognize his talents for what they are....great! He is well respected around the music business and well respected by many "legends" of the business. So what if he hasn't sold millions of records? It doesn't make him any less of an artist, it just makes him a victim of the game so to speak.

Saint John wrote: It's what the fans are used to. Unless it's Steve Perry up there singing (in which case range wouldn't matter) the fans want to hear the sound they're used to.

Fans were just fine with Jeff Scott Soto singing for Journey. Never did I ever read a bad concert review of Journey when JSS handled the lead vocals. And as a fan of Journey, I'm used to the band changing lead vocals like they change their socks. Too many "fans" are caught up in how things sounded in the 1980's. The decade is over. How many times does a band have to go to the well until you realize they're just cashing in on the nostalgic memory. If it truly is just about music, why not try something different?

Saint John wrote:Yeah, ok. Any 30+ year old band can put an album in Wal mart and keep it in the Top 10 for 3 weeks...riiight. I suppose the people from The New York Times, GQ, Ellen, and the CBS Sunday Morning Show are all Wal Mart employees and/or shareholders. And just where was this prophecy before all of the success? Get the fuck outta here.

Worked for the Eagles didn't it? REO Speedwagon did decently with the Wal*Mart distribution. I'm sure the same will happen for AC/DC when their new album comes out. Dude, you need to take the rose colored glasses off and put the pom poms down. And stop with the tough talk, it doesn't work on me. Nobody's buying into it.

Just because all 'fans' don't write reviews, doesn't mean they were all just fine with JSS. As mentioned before, I brought a large group to a show who were not following the day to day movement of the band, and they were pissed that they had lost that sound with JSS. Actually, they seemed to be more pissed that they spent money on a ticket for a guy that didn't sound like Perry. I think he put on a fine show, but there were plenty that were none too happy.

That's what I mean.
When you FEEL that great vocal, you just close your eyes and have to stop what you are doing and experience it.

Sorry Susie, too much coffee this morning, I know you didn't mean it to be, but that last sentence struck me funny, gave me a giggle............kind of in a 'would you like me to turn the light out on my way out, so you can be alone with that lyric'......kinda way.   :P

Journey hadn't had that sound since Steve Perry left. Obviously your large group of friends didn't know what was going on in Journeyland to begin with.
