But Arnel is better on Only The Young.

Close the thread now, it's not even debatable. :D

Let's put it this way...Arnel's about as close as you get to the original! And I'm not sure the original could sing in that register any longer. I'd like to be proved wrong, however.

I'm gonna refrain from using the word "better." I prefer Arnel's versions of Open Arms and Only The Young.

Me, too. I've never liked Perry's vocals on most of the live versions that I've heard of "Open Arms" and "Only the Young", especially the latter.

There you go, SP "loons!" It was just a matter of time before AP would have a name for his fans, the "swoons!"

I think personally Arnels vocals on that song are just as good as Perrys recorded.. however Perrys version is better for the simple fact that it is Perry

I wish I could hear what you're apparently hearing!

I hear an adequate singer (Arnel) who has a nice tone, but who rushes the vocals too much, too often ahead of the beat, and packing a zero emotional punch.

I've yet to hear a good live version of "Only The Young" from the Perry days I must admit...but for me Perry's studio version of that track is the best work he ever did. Untouchable.

True.

SP is the sugar. Arnel is the sucralose. I guess it will do in a pinch but you can't beat the real thing. (I could have said SP is the dick and Arnel is the vibrator, and still have the second part be true... and NO I don't mean "dick" the same way as when half of you all call him a dick...  )

You did not just make that analogy...
You couldn't say Perry is Porterhouse and Arnel is filet?? :P
Perry is a venti macchiato and Arnel is a skinny latte no whip?
Perry is the Sears Tower and Arnel is the Hancock? (Ok, so that one is kind of phallic.)

Ah, such a diplomatic way of stating it! To be honest, "Open Arms" was never a favorite of mine so it will be interesting to hear what AP does with it. :)

I'm with Matthew. Okay, we can all agree Arnel's live version may be better than SP's live, because OTY was introduced (live) on the ROR tour, where SP's vocals were starting to decline. However, nobody but nobody, can be better than SP on any of the recorded stuff -- ever!

Open Arms and Faithfully, give me a break! Nobody but SP can sing those songs with the emotion like the Voice. Recorded or Live!

That's my opinion!

I thought I had read where you said something to the effect, but wasn't sure what song it was. I've listened to the rerecords a few times, and that one really stands out. I even like the vocal inflection he has at the beginning. I tend to agree with the poster in this thread that said he rushes the notes sometimes. Perry would ever so slightly lay off the beat a little, letting the music come through and his vocals blend in more. Arnel kicks OTY right square in the ass though.

Huge SP fan here and AP is not better on any of the songs. I think AP has a great voice and does very well on the new songs, but I could only listen to the re-records once...just can't get past this whole deal & the songs sounded "off". SP was co-creator & embodied those words & melody and put them out into the world - that means a lot. If we go with analogies (I can't compete with BJG & Rhi - lol) think of a Picasso or Degas and a reproduction painting. Which would you rather have?

In the studio, no. Not even the re-record touches the soaring depth Perry nailed in the Frontiers session.

Live however, yeah, I agree.

Every time I've heard OTY live from Perry, it's been the opening song of the night though. Most singers have a warm up period during the first song and OTY isn't the best choice for that. Geddy Lee scared me at the rush concert when he was pitchy on their opening song (limelight).

If the band opened with OTY I wonder if Arnel would hit it as well? Can you say "Chile"?
