I really like this article.

Isn't it funny how there are so many folks out there that may have disregarded Steve Perry back in the 80's, because of the corporate rock image or the fact that his looks didn't appeal to 15 year old girls, who would much rather look at Simon Le Bon or George Michael (before learning he was gay!), only to realize how truly incredible (and totally HOT!!!) he really was! :D

In dispute by whom?

to put it mildly, there is a VERY large gray area regarding the shooting, and a lot of events (such as a VERY brutal beating of Cooke's body mentioned by several people at the funeral like Aretha Franklin, and a large amount of cash that Cooke had on him that night that dissappeared) that don't agree with the official version of the story.

There is a large subset, including members of Cooke's family, that think the whole thing was set-up and the official story is simply a cover-up for what actually happened. Search it out online--there's a lot of funky stuff going on that doesn't quite add up.

Ah.
The usual objective parties I see.
"I love almost everybody."---Rocky Balboa 1990
"Let's reform this thing.Let's go out and get some guys who want to work and go do it"--Neal Schon February, 2001
"I looked at Neal, and I just saw a guy who really wants his band back"-JCain 2/01

For me, listening to Cooke's "You send me", you can hear a deliberate (or maybe not, just saying) similar tone, delivery from the bridge in "Who's Crying Now" - Only so many tears you can cry.....you're love will never die, wowoo woo etc. Its pretty eerrily close I think. That said, Perry actually does a more smoother and extended wowoo.

Speaking of haunting, anyone think the tunes Send Her My Love and You send me, were also inspired by Cooke, by Perry? After all, SHML is solely written by Perry himself.

"Send her my Love" was written by both SP and Jon Cain. I know there are words "lifted" from Sam Cooke songs that are in Journey songs..."let your backbone slip"..."you make me weep" -- I don't know if they were intentional, like a tribute to Cooke or subconscious, 'tho.

Interesting read. Thanks Rick.

Here's a clip with a lot of Cooke'isms.

My very fave song & performed so wonderfully here! I wish this one and many others were all available on DVD instead of these tiny little youtube things.
