Bands that you downright BINGE on?

Postby ProgRocker53 » Sun Jul 06, 2008 4:43 pm

I realized today talking to Rip that when it comes to listening to Dokken, I either don't or I do.

What I mean by that is, that I go days at a time without Dokking Out very much. Then, all of a sudden, it just takes a few songs and BAM, there I am, huddled up in a ball on the floor convulsing in ecstatic agony while all my Dokken CDs are in the changer, assaulting me for days on end... and I love it, and I need it, and I rub the hearty feast all over me... well not so much, but you get the picture.

I can't think of any artists that I listen to in a similar way right off... maybe Rage Against the Machine, but that's about all.

What bands do you seem to only listen to in binge form?

I definitely binge on certain bands, and will listen to them exclusively for a few weeks before resuming my normal routine. Here are a few...

Dokken (natch!)
Winger
Europe
Whitesnake
Rush
ASIA
Journey
Queensryche
Great White
Dream Theater
Loverboy
W.A.S.P. (though probably for the last time)

I know exactly what you mean, Prog...and this outbreak of obsessive/compulsive listening can happen with genres of music too. Just one song can lead to a hundred others if I listen to Metallica (which then turns into 80s thrash metal in general...Slayer, Anthrax, Megadeth, Exodus, Bathory...)....Yes (classic and Rabin eras)....CSNY...(which leads to America and the Eagles etc)...and any 'guilty pleasure' pop record from the 70s/80s can set me off...and before I know it all I want to hear is Andrew Gold, ABBA, ONJ, Randy Newman, Randy Edelman, Christopher Cross, Bellamy Brothers, Dean Friedman...etc...etc...etc....right into pure crap like If by Telly Savalas and Forever And Ever by Demis Roussos...in fact the worse it gets the bigger the kick.

Happens to me with genres more than bands. I'm either listening to hard rock or I'm not. I'm either listening to aor rock or I'm not. I'm either listening to country/americana or I'm not...

A Rush binge is a staple with any true rock afficianado! And with that catalog, they can last a while! :)

I just downloaded the Hear 'n Aid song, 'Stars'....and I have to say that I really do not know what all the fuss is about Geoff Tate. I think his voice/style is horrific....just like Dickinson - best suited for some sort of Operatic music....I can honestly say that Tate actually sucks.

But Don was kickin' it..... :D

And Dio...well, enough said!

Dude, Geoff Tate is a vocal overlord, man! But let's just say watching the studio outtakes by both Geoff Tate and Dio gave me hope as a singer that I don't completely suck... haha! There is a lot of experimenting and wizardry that is done in a studio to get that final product....

I especially love the exchange between Dio and Don while Don is playing with his vocals... "Hey, Don! G.Q. called... and they said forget it!" HAHA!

Mine.

That's why I'm no longer in a bar band. Too much binging! Sorry, but I cannot be in a tavern every weekend and stay sober. It's like being at the beach with a parka on.

I stopped binging about two years ago (which was when I left my bar band). I've seen too many of my old friends die young from binging. As much fun as it is, it takes the years off prematurely.

But then again, I don't want to waste away in a nursing home either. I'd rather go out doing something I love doing than getting dementia in an old folks home that stinks like piss and shit. Maybe I should get back in the bar band?

Decisions, decisions.

For me, it's usually prompted by something I read, see on TV, a memory, etc. - reminds me to 'binge' on something in particular.

This weekend, it was Buckcherry Friday night. Last night I went on a major INXS binge. Today, I'm vacuuming to Pavarotti  .

Bro, say sober and enjoy your life. As least you'll be able to smell the full natural bouquet of the piss and s**t! LOL... I have 3 1/2 years myself.

Gary Schutt. no schutt. one song reminds you of another and then you forgot about this other one and then you remember that you love this one.......

Now, he has a new cd set for release July 29th. 17 songs. only cuz 18 wouldnt fit. so the binge will soon be longer.

of course, when you get to SENTIMENTAL, then it turns into a JSS binge. (Jeff sings on this one). the JSS catalog will keep you rolling for a month! then i can't leave Howie out so i get out the Howie/JLT Rockline interview. i'm impossible

I am doing the STYX binge today however.

i had a 25 year Journey binge but I am trying to branch out. a little. but  not too far. once you start a journey binge, you are locked in for WEEKS if you add all the side projects and all the solo efforts. JSS broke me outta that binge and started a whole new addiction. and happily so 8)

so much music so little time..................

I went on a Rush binge in May in the weeks before I saw them in concert, it made me appreciate the band even more when I finally got to see them again.

My last band that I binged on was when I saw The Police at Dodger's Stadium last year. I hadn't smoked any weed for about nine years, and somebody passed me a doobie. The light show instantly looked much more colorful and vibrant. What a coincidence! It was great until Sting's face began to morph on the big video screen.
