"I never really felt like part of the band." Kinda makes sense when you look at it from that perspective.
Still reeks of self-pity and malcontent.![]()
If he felt like that, he chose to. I think.

Yes... "fuck you...I'm going to head off into relative obscurity and you can go and sell nine million copies of your next album." Hope I never make that kind of protest in my lifetime.

Wasn't ever about money for Rolie or Smitty. They both walked away at different times and continued in music with their self-respect intact.

Isn't it interesting why some band members have achieved sainthood on these forums - while others get put through the mill for behaving in much the same way.
Rolie walks away in 1980 and is applauded for his "integrity" and "self-respect".
Perry walks away in 1987 and he's "robbed the fans".
This perception is as warped as the one which portrays Rolie as a "rocker" and Cain as "pop" - even though it is Cain who is the one with co-writing credits on all the band's heaviest songs - and Rolie who had a hand in some of Journey's most bubblegum moments.

That's too much work. I just like to play.

I guess Rolie could have :
1. stayed and kissed Perry's ass.
2. give almost complete control to Perry.
3. Agree to fire Smitty and Ross for the CLASSIC ROR album
4. Sit back and watch Perry say on VH1 "I never felt like I was really a member of the band" (not an exact quote, but you understand)
Matthew...It's just my and apparently Stone Colds opinion, so don't put your Perry defense system on full alert.
Next time I'm out your way, we'll have tea and discuss this and other Perry related things.
cheers.

Matthew wrote:Cain BEGGED Perry to continue in 1987...Schon called Perry "the voice of Journey" as late as 1996...Smith has owned his part in the ROR fall-out...Valory was able to recover from bankruptcy from touring the songs Perry co-wrote and sang....Herbert knows the best decision he ever made in his entire career was to hire Perry...and Azoff wouldn't even have the job had Perry not hired him...
So they might well have thought Perry was a difficult guy to work with..but boy did they all suck it right up as the cash flowed in....
And as for Rolie...by all accounts he would have walked out on the band no matter what Perry was like. He was over the intensive touring and was never likely to be content unless he was doing his own thing. So his departure is a "testament" to absolutely fuck all.
Tito wrote:I thought Herbie claimed Perry basically put Valory in bankruptcy in one of his interviews.
Smith had nothing to do with himself being fired.

Considering he was the lead singer I don't find this to be anything more than a factually accurate observation a 2 year old could have made.
Not sure how he could have considering he didn't do anything wrong. Journey can wait for Perry for years or a decade, but Perry couldn't wait for Smith to learn how to play to a click track??? Real nice bandmate.
Matthew wrote:
Ross did nothing but play the bass lines that he contributed.
Yup...Herbert resurrected a guy lacking so much self-confidence that he gave up on music and joined The Turkey Shit Removers Union...Local 0. He worked his ass off for the band, put the pieces in place to make them wildly rich and famous and was in turn fired for said hard work.
Which is exactly what Nostrildamus wanted. Herbie, the guy with enough fire and passion to move ahead and find a suitable replacement that would succeed, out of the picture.
And watched helplessly as he liquidated everything in an attempt to make sure Neal Schon and the baby he (Neal) created could never be relevant again...a decision he had no business making.
When did he do that? What on earth are Like Herbie said, the old "If I can't/don't want to continue, nobody can" philosophy. Nothing's changed to this day...he simply can't stand to see Journey move on without him. He's the one living in the past.

The problem is, besides Largo do they have anthing else on usable film from that time. The Detroit show is where most of the Captured audio comes from, hopefully they have some video of it. I would still like to see the end of the Departure show in Japan from a different angle. I don't know if the camera man had an epeleptic seizure or what from AWYWI till the middle of the encore.

I wonder what it was that made you move over to the dark side, Saint John. There you were..writing one sensible post after another like a person of sound mind and good musical taste..and then...bam! ...almost overnight you turned into this cringing and moronic apologist for the post-Perry era...so much so that you even put even the old school Augeri fanatics to shame.
I don't believe for a second that after two decades of Perry fandom you've suddenly gone cold on the music. And nor do I buy your claim that you've suddenly 'seen the light' that Perry was a difficult and complicated guy who could be both extaordinarily creative...and destructive too. All of this was common knowledge.
So what was it? Are you one of those guys whose entire belief system implodes at the sight of a backstage pass and an autographed t-shirt? Was there some clique of posters here you wanted to impress? Or have you just become all twisted up inside as you've got older that you'll never be a supremely talented multi-millionaire who can take it easy for the rest of his life?
Come on Saint John..try and be honest for a change about this 'conversion experience' of yours.
