OT: More words you can't say!

Postby Rip Rokken » Fri Jul 11, 2008 4:38 pm

For all of you trying to keep up with P.C. standards, the terms "black hole", "Angel's Food Cake", and "Devil's Food Cake" are now considered racist in connotation, and are hereby forbidden from use! Please strike them from your daily vernacular...

Dumbest bullshit ever. For the love of... (ok what do I say that won't offend someone?) ...can we please have one big nationwide simultaneous unclenching?

I read the story knowing it would piss me off and I was right. So... angel food cake is "white" therefore white folks are all angels and devil's food is chocolate, therefore bla- I mean, Afri- I mean, colo- I mean.... non white folks are all devils.

We are REALLY reaching now, aren't we?

Tell you what, let's throw out any and all references to all colors numbers and shapes so as not to offend ANYONE. Ban Sesame Street from the air. You may no longer refer to your account being in the red or in the black (which is by the way, a POSITIVE reference), you may not say 'blackballed'.... when electing a pope, they may not use smoke - they will now have to indicate papal status by leaning out the window and shouting "We done got one!". No more devil's food snacks (someone alert the marketing folk at Dolly Madison, those fuckers got some work to do), and all you men, quit complaining about blue balls - you're upsetting Smurfs. "Ours are blue ALL the time, how do you think WE feel!?"

Its amazing how willing people are to fight over words. They're JUST words.
All words have synonyms. If you don't like something, get a thesaurus and choose something else to call it.
I absolutely hate the "p" word as a reference female anatomy. So you know what I do?

I don't call it that! Sheeeeeesh.

I always go back to that old children's rhyme, "Sticks and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me". It's virtually impossible to offend me with words directed at me, and luckily, at least some of us in the world just don't give other people that kind of power over us. It's like handing people the keys to you, and saying, "Here, you drive.... drive carefully!" Screw that...

We've bred a nation of cowards and oversensitive wusses, and we've also (no offense to women) feminized our society. Sorry -- I believe men should be men, and not metrosexuals or whatever they call them. I see tons of guys around that I can't imagine picking up a gun to defend themselves if we ever got invaded, and that's kinda chilling.

Wow Rip, that was different. I agree about the PC bullshit, but I don't agree that you can define every man and every woman in the world in terms of one opinion or definition. Isn't that doing the same thing as the PC crowd is doing? Do we really want to be a part of a culture where our actions are defined by a "majority"?

Society has not been "feminized" you're just seeing more of society because of the video age. I grew up where all the men acted exactly like each other, and most of them still do, but as they learn they don't have to emulate to be accepted, they've changed slightly.

I think what defines a man or a woman is whatever makes that man or woman happy.

Hey, not at attack, just a conversation. :D

As far as picking up guns to defend ourselves, that's kind of a moot point too. It would be kind of hard to defend yourself against a nuclear attack.

Here's my solution. Let people live and be who they wish to be, as long as they don't hurt children or old people or animals, it shouldn't be a problem for anyone. I don't think anyone wants to be told how to live or how to behave.

Oh, no... not taken that way, and I probably could explain what I mean better. Heck, even the term "feminization" might not be the best description to use, because there are some tough girls out there! I think when I really examine it, here's what I see is the problem -- people are becoming more dependent on authority figures for solutions, and less capable of resolving problems themselves. And now we've gotten to a point where people even look for higher intervention when they get called a name they don't like. I quit doing that when I was 6 years old... haha! Now, if someone can't take being called a name, or even hearing a term that they find "offensive", how the hell will they defend themselves from a physical attack? Could be a terrorist or a mugger on the street.

Here's one thing that's for damn sure, and that is non-debatable -- we're never going to have a Gene Roddenberry Utopian society where everyone is respectful of everyone else, and those at the tip top get there by taking advantage of and stepping on other people. They DEPEND on the weak to stay weak to suit their own ends. Could be politicians, could be large corporate CEOs, whatever... Best thing people can do is quit catering to philosophies which only lead to them being taken advantage of and manipulated, get educated, and get tough...

This is way too huge a conversation to really summarize, and has so many facets. Heck, I was talking to a girl yesterday about how to define boundaries in the workplace so your company doesn't take advantage of you. Some people think they are just being "good, loyal employees" by working off the clock at all hours and never saying no, and their companies will let you do this if you let them do it to you. They also generally will respect your boundaries if you set them early on. Doesn't have to be much more than, "Man, I really can't -- my family depends on me in the evening..." Whatever.... Otherwise, people are just letting their employers effectively decrease the value of their time. People should calculate what their hour is worth if they constantly work overtime off the clock. Just an example. Me, I often work 60-hour weeks, but I get compensated for everything I do, and that's the payoff.

The world will always have the aggressors and the passive folk, and the best way to make it thru life is to find out how to deal with people and situations effectively, and often in a language they understand, else the world will chew you up and spit you out. That's just life...

I'm not white. I'm beige.
African-Americans are not "black". They are brown.

Beige and brown are in the same color family. Therefore, I take offense at "devil's food cake", "blackballed", "black hole", and "black cats are BAD luck".

Good lord. What next?
Coke will have to be renamed because coke is brown and brown people are stereotyped as drug users?
And since I'm beige, which is a shade of brown, I should lead the march on that. BAN COKE!

Well, in that case, we should stop classifying people by hair color, too. I mean... blonde, brunette, redhead? Just exactly the same thing too. What the fuck is next? Are we going to rename chocolate? Is dark, white, milk, and semi-sweet offensive too? Oh, I know... "Red Red Wine and "Oh Sherrie" are offensive to alcoholics.
Soon to be released politically correct versions will be "Clear Clear Sparkling Cider" and "Oh'Doul's".

"One Whiskey One Shot One Beer" will have to be "Three nondescript beverages of your choice".

Ok... "One Burbon, One Scotch, One Beer" but I forgive you.

"Girl Can't Help It" will have to be changed to "Human Bearing Genetic Mark-Up of Two X Chromosomes Is Attempting to Fill an Emotional Void With a Vice of His/Her Own Choosing and Having Difficulty Integrating Such Within Her/His Own Life".

Little known fact: that was Perry's original title. They had to bargain him down to a 4 word title and let him fly with "Why Can't this Night Go On Forever" in exchange. True story.

did not Phil Grahm come out this week while with MCCAIN and came out and said we are a nation of whiners now?? I think that is 1000% correct. But the media thinks its their que that McCain is out of touch...

Question... ARE the journalist whiners or THE PEOPLE OF AMERICA whiners??? To me it starts
with the journalist reporting what the report...and we just follow their reasoning...

And "Be Good To Yourself" was "Ballad of the Chronic Masturbater" but folks in the 80s weren't ready for that kind of honesty.

And while we're at it, I'd like to know if Black Magic Woman is about a woman who practices black magic or a magic woman who happens to be black. I always assumed the former but I'd like to nail down whether its offensive to blacks, or to witches.
