OT: Favre Asks Packers to Release Him

Chris Mortensen of ESPN is reporting that Brett Favre and his agent have sent a letter asking the Green Bay Packers to release him.

According to Mortensen, the letter was sent via overnight mail on Thursday and arrived at the Packers’ facility this morning. Favre is currently on the team’s reserve-retired list, but under league rule, if Favre requests to be taken off that list, the Packers are required to either put him on their active roster or release him. So far, Favre has not made that request.

Mortensen also reports that Favre and agent Bus Cook had a conference call on Tuesday with Packers General Manager Ted Thompson and coach Mike McCarthy, and Favre told the men he wants to play in the NFL again.

Favre is reportedly in good shape and is regularly throwing and running with a high school team in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

The Packers open training camp on July 27.

The way Favre played last year, and to see the fun he was having, I think he still has AT LEAST 3 years left in the tank. He played extremely well with a very young team who was unproven' going into last year.. and to start the season he had 0 running game behind him (Although it did come on the 2nd half of the season.)

Yes, he ended on a bad note by throwing a HORRIBLY thrown ball that was intercepted to 'end' his career. The type of competitor he is, I can understand the itch to come back. The way he is going about it year after year is just getting annoying and repetitive. He will ONLY come back to be on a competitive team and a team that bids strong contenders to win a Championship. Is that in Green Bay? Who knows..but they are certainly on the rise. The thing is, Favre IS the Green Bay Packers. Just like Dan Marino was the Dolphins and that Joe Montana was the 49'ers. Players who had success in one place for so many years that end their career elsewhere when at the end of their career simply just do NOT fit into a system and could take years to learn..it's becoming a rookie all over again. They usually all FAIL in another City.

Favre still has years left. Great. If I were him, even though he ended his career on a bad interception, that doesn't overshadow the fact he is the most prolific and legendary player to ever play the game at the QB position. He should hang it up for good before he goes another place and embarrasses himself just like Joe Montana, and Franco Harris did.

They said the same thing about Joe Montana, and he went to Kansas City and did really well. Some idiot (whose name I can't remember) dropped a pass that, if caught, would have put the Chiefs in the Super Bowl, giving Joe another chance.

I didn't even discover Joe until he went to KC, but he didn't retire and then come back, either. Once you retire and everyone makes a big fuss, stay retired! Unfortunately a quarterback's career can't go on forever . Can't imagine anyone else with Green Bay, either.

THE ONE THING THAT WOULD MAKE THIS AMAZING IS IF THE PACKERS TRADED him to MIAMI for JASON TAYLOR.. as is being one of the scenarios... that would bring the Packers defensive unit up three notches... MIAMI would be perfect the packers would get JAson taylor and Miami would get an ego trip who would retire after 1 pre season game with no talent around him and sacked every time he went back to pass. The Pens took care of good business this off season. A playoff team recognize what it takes to win in a certain city, esp. like a city of Pittsburgh. Taking care of business is trusting in your own men that help build a franchise inside and out. Sure, players come and go, but locking up young guys who have Cup experience in their first couple years in the league will appear crucial in the long run.

Sidney Crosby (Who is becoming a phenom of his own) and Ryan Whitney are already signed to long term contracts. We just negotiated long term deals to superstars like Evgeni Malkin, Marc-Andre Fluery, and Brooks Orpik. It doesn't matter who you put around these players. They will instantly make whoever better. This year it will be guys like Miraslov Satan, Matt Cooke and Eric Godard.

The guys we lost do NOT worry me whatsoever. We did well with adding a guy like Marion Hossa to the starting lineup..but he came the 2nd half of the season when everything was close to being clinched. Even though he was our leading scorer in the Playoffs.. I make no doubt that playing around guys like Malkin and Crosby can do that to anybody.

With that said, I predict many dominating years from the Penguins. It's right there and looks good for the City. If it's not next year then it will be FOR SURE in the next couple years to come. Bank on it.

Signing Miroslav Satan and Ruslan Fedotenko won’t make up for that. I’m glad you guys gave that soft Evgeni Malkin all that money. He is a woman.
