Probably because he realized the song sucks and didn't want to waste his voice.

in fact, I can’t tell you the last time I listened to any studio version of a Journey song, as they were light years better live, imo… but for others, they want everything to sound EXACTLY like the studio versions, with no variations what-so-ever
(which, I think, goes a long way to explain the sp-sound-a-like camp vs the just find a great singer camp thing…)

Agree on all counts! Well except for maybe Open Arms. I skip over.....even live versions of it now too, just plain tired of that one. That one and Who's Crying Now.
