OT: Favre Asks Packers to Release Him

Packers G.M. Ted Thompson might have been feeling neglected while he watched on Monday night Part One of the Brett Favre interview. After all, it was coach Mike McCarthy and not Thompson who was mentioned most often by Brett, primarily with respect to the perceived effort to force him to decide whether to retire in March and then with respect to the attempt to persuade him not to press for a chance to return with another team in June.

But Thompson gets his share of attention, in Part Two.

According to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, Favre slams Thompson in the segment that will air Tuesday night on Fox News, and Favre points to three incidents that caused him to not trust Thompson.

First was Favre’s desire that the team add receiver Randy Moss in 2007. We reported, numerous times, that Favre was actively lobbying the team to acquire Moss after two failed seasons with the Raiders. There was also a rumor that the team’s failure to try to land the star receiver, who revived his career in a big way with the Patriots last season, prompted Favre to make noise about leaving the team. Though it’s still unclear whether the latter proposition is accurate, it’s now obvious that Favre wanted Moss — and that Favre didn’t appreciate Thompson’s decision not to be honest about that fact with the public.

“I worked my butt off . . . to try to get them to sign Randy Moss,” Favre told Fox News.

Second, Favre says he tried to get Thompson to re-sign guards Marco Rivera and Mike Wahle, both of whom left via free agency.

Third, Favre pushed hard for Thompson to consider hiring former 49ers and Lions coach Steve Mariucci, but Thompson rebuffed Brett, hiring Mike McCarthy instead.

“[N]one of those had anything to do with me retiring once again,” Favre says, “but, you know, it’s hard for me to trust, you know, this guy when I — either I’m told one thing and everyone else is told another, or he’s telling the public one thing and telling me another. And so — and that’s part of the reason for the [request for a] release.”

So Favre didn’t retire from the Packers because of mistrust for Thompson, but now Favre wants out in part because he doesn’t trust Thompson.

But, Brett, didn’t you say you want out because the Packers told you that they don’t want you to play?

More importantly, Brett, when did you become the quarterback/General Manager of the Packers?

Maybe we finally understand why Favre kept quiet for so long on this topic. Now that he’s opening his mouth, he’s sounding like an idiot.

Regarding this apparent effort to smear Thompson by dredging up outdated and irrelevant pisses and/or moans, Favre needs to realize that he hasn’t always been truthful, either. On July 2, for example, he said that the talk of his desire to return is “rumor” and that there’s “[n]o reason for it.”

So before Brett says “you know, it’s hard for me to trust, you know, this guy when I — either I’m told one thing and everyone else is told another, or he’s telling the public one thing and telling me another,” Favre should ask “this guy” in the mirror whether he has been doing the very same thing.

1) Favre's not the GM, could he be ANY more egotistical?
2) I heard the GM lobbied for him to throw less picks
3) Marco Rivera, Penn State alum.

Favre has become the party guest who wouldn't leave. I was a Favre fan, but by refusing to back up Rodgers', he is showing how selfish he is. He doesn't want to help a team win, he just wants to be "the man" again.

I know, I have been a crazed Favre fan for at least 15 years now. I always liked him because I thought he was down to earth, respectful, and chill. This just blows all that right out of the water. What a load of shit.

If Brett wants to play, he needs to merely show up and play. While he thinks that the Packers have in some way “done him wrong,” they’re due to pay him $12 million in 2008, which will become fully guaranteed if he’s on the roster on opening day.

We should all be so wronged by our employers.

Colts quarterback Peyton Manning will miss four-to-six weeks after undergoing surgery on Monday to remove an infected bursa sac from his left knee.

As a result, he possibly could miss all of the preseason, and perhaps the regular-season opener on September 7.

Team president Bill Polian said that Manning had been receiving treatment for an inflamed bursa sac since February.

The real question, as we see it, is whether the estimate provided is real, or whether Manning’s situation will mimic that of receiver Marvin Harrison, who always seemed last year to be a week away from playing, but who never was able to perform.

Look at it this way — Manning’s problem has been around for five months. Though removal of the sac could go a long way toward solving the problem, there’s no guarantee at this point that Manning will be back to 100 percent any time soon.

And if the Colts suddenly jump into the bidding for Brett Favre, it would be a clear sign that the situation is more serious than advertised.

We’re kidding. We think.

I love this mess.

COOK SAYS FAVRE WON’T ASK FOR REINSTATEMENT YET

Contrary to a report in the Green Bay Press-Gazette that quarterback Brett Favre will send a letter to Commissioner Roger Goodell requesting reinstatement, Favre’s agent, Bus Cook, says that such a request will not be made in the near future.

“We have no definite plans to ask for reinstatement,” Cook told ESPN’s Chris Mortensen. “Right now we have until the sixth week [of the regular season] and Brett has made it pretty clear that he is not willing to come in as a backup.

“If he asks for reinstatement and they start fining him $15,000 a day [for not reporting to training camp], well that just doesn’t make sense. We’re going to let Green Bay decide what they want to do. It’s their move.”

Actually, Bus, it’s Brett’s move. He asked to be release, the team said no. If he wants back in, he needs to request reinstatement, and then show up for practice.

But Brett apparently doesn’t want to advance this chess match if he has to get his hands dirty to do so. That’s his prerogative. Either way, the ball is in Favre’s court.

The options are simple: Send the letter and show up, or don’t send the letter and shut up.

Its going to be a circus this training camp up at Lambaeu. Also Brett is guaranteed about 12,000.000.00 big ones if he is on the roster I think I saw somewhere about the 1st of AUGUST?? Did anyone else see that or hear that somewhere, or did i hear that wrong??? I cant remember WHERE I saw that figure....so if I am wrong this is my disclaimer.

BOTH SIDES ARE SCREWING IT UP. BRETT for talking and the GM for not saying sure come on back....

Sorry, no mercy.

Brett Favre's growing rift with the Green Bay Packers could lead to a few awkward moments for the three-time MVP this weekend.

Favre is scheduled to present former teammate Frank Winters at the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame induction banquet at Lambeau Field on Saturday night. Winters, former Packers defensive tackle Gilbert Brown and video director Al Treml will be enshrined in the Packers' Hall of Fame.

Should Favre keep his commitment to Winters, his close friend and former centre, his return to Lambeau will come a little more than a week after formally requesting to be released from his contract - and only days after expressing his distrust of Packers management and insisting that the team pressured him into making his retirement decision in an interview with Fox News on Monday.

New Reports Suggest Neal is NOT God.

AP -- July 15, 2008

CAMBRIDGE, MA: A new study recently issued from the Harvard Divinity School casts a shocking new light on one man's fabled adoration for long-time Journey guitar virtuoso, Neal Schon. The 18-week heavy-laden research and analysis of ancient texts and scrolls point to a conclusion that Schon, although old, is not old enough to be God. A sample of Schon was used in an extensive carbon-dating trial and showed that Schon is approximately 54 years of age. God could not be reached for an immediate sample for his carbon test, however, the researchers took his most noticeable piece of work to date, the Universe, and guesstimated that God was in the neighborhood of 13.7 billion years, give or take 120 million.

When contacted for comment, Schon remarked: "I never claimed to be God, man. But ya' know all my women always had the same pet name for me. All them bitches called me 'O. God'. Maybe that's where the confusion came from.

Not to mention GOD appears to be 2 inches taller then Mr. Schon, without the addition of artifical height enhancers (elevator shoes, Fro).

Mrs. NIGGY doesn't complain. :P

Hey, Ang - Looks like your Vikings may have gotten caught with their hand in the cookie jar.

ARE VIKES IN DEEP DOO-DOO?

Though it remains to be seen whether the Packers filed tampering charges against the Vikings based on a hunch or hard evidence, our guess is that folks in Minnesota are feeling a little nervous right now about how the situation could unfold.

In the past, the NFL generally looked the other way regarding tampering. Two years ago, the Patriots claimed their relationship with receiver Deion Branch had been disrupted by the Jets. Though New England was seemingly confident in its case, the controversy died quietly.

Earlier this year, however, the league smacked down the 49ers for allegedly engaging in contract talks with agent Drew Rosenhaus regarding Bears linebacker Lance Briggs at a time when the Bears and 49ers were talking about a possible trade. Though Rosenhaus didn’t testify at the hearing and the Niners denied that any discussions with Rosenhaus had centered on Briggs, the league was able to find that tampering had occurred based on the contents of internal 49ers e-mail messages at key intervals of the overall time line.

In this case, Vikings offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell presumably will deny talking to Favre about playing in Minnesota. As to Favre, who suddenly has developed a case of chronic verbal diarrhea, there’s a chance that he’ll talk long enough to both exonerate and implicate the team. If anyone can make sense of what he’s saying.

The question ultimately will be whether the Packers can develop evidence beyond the phone calls between Bevell and Favre. As we pointed out on Wednesday, no rule prohibits the two men from being friends, or from talking on the phone like pre-teen girls with 44-ounce Slurpees and the Sprint Simply Everything plan.

For now, it seems that the Packers don’t have a smoking gun. Per the Associated Press, they’re relying upon the number of calls between the two men, and a belief that interest from the Vikings drove Favre’s interest in playing again.

But if members of the Vikings’ coaching staff and/or front office were dumb enough to trade e-mail messages regarding the possibility of landing Favre, and if those messages mesh with the trail of calls between Favre and Bevell, the Vikings could be in very hot water.

Even if the Packers don’t have, and can’t find, hard proof to support their claim, the move makes sense. At a minimum, the claim will likely scare the Vikings away from pursuing Favre, if they were ever inclined to do so. (The 49ers, after all, didn’t sign Briggs once he became an unrestricted free agent.)

The charge allows the Packers to paint Favre as a traitor, and as a liar. He recently told Fox News that he hasn’t envisioned himself playing for another team. The Packers now contend that he has, and that the team in question is one of the Packers’ most hated rivals.
