I think Frank has said his feeling for the band can be separated from his objectiveness towards the product they provide. So he can listen to their music and still hate them at the same time. ( I think that's what he means )

Dude, honestly...I don't know if you or I have the time to read the 10 pages I'm going to need to explain myself on this...

So I'll leave it at this:

I do *hate* the band. I do think they've acted reprehensibly in the past with respect to Augeri and JSS....

However, I grew up on Neal Schon's playing. When I play guitar, I *sound* like him...it's hard to not love what he does on this record. I'm also seemingly doing an about face on Arnel and his viability in this band. What I used to feel were 4-5 good songs on revs, is now a stellar disc....thanks to repeated listening with an open mind.

I've also spent some time with the retreads CD this morning....and I have to say (I'm going to fucking get crucified for this)....the redone version of Be Good To Yourself is arguably better than the original, several times over....

Actually, I've said just the opposite. I firmly believe that, given what I know about them, I *can't* seperate it...I've argued some can and some cant and that i'm one of the ones that cant.

However, having said that, I'm trying *very* hard to fight my urge to want to attach the music to the person...and listen to this with an open mind. It's going to be hard, but i'm trying.

Also, to dispell Larry on this....I did not buy this just to say that it's crap. I could do that without investing 12 dollars into the band. I could've downloaded the whole thing, not just the new tracks. I bought it because the new tracks are really growing on me...and I need to give it a fair shake...

You forgot about Robert Flieschman now that man got screwed. I like the re-records because they sound when they are played live. But the originals are the best.

Im still very unsure about the retreads. I was and still am scared that it's going to force an unnecessary comparison of arnel v. perry....and not the one everyone makes around here. Everyone likes to compare Arnel of today vs the Perry of today....but when you commit the voice to disc redoing those songs, you compare Arnel of today to Perry of yesterday year. That's an unfair fight.

However, there are little tidbits on the rerecords that I actually like...things not on the original.

For example, the acoustic guitar on the outro of Stone is great. So's Neal's chorused solo over the same part.
The outro of Be Good To Yourself is fucking amazing...like I said, arguably better than the original.....

Only The Young is hard...very hard...to listen to, as I feel the original is almost imposible to top or even come close to...

All great music is never that far from the person.
but it is created in a space that is & is not himself.
It is music of the heart, wishes & dreams.

It does not the define the person nor can it be seperated
It is it's own thing born from a scent, or a touch, a taste, anger, lust, or passion.
Brought to light it is looked at from all around
like a model in the eyes of a painter
wanting to bring out the beauty of the subject.

So it is still something very much alive within
& that is the only person we really have to answer to.

Music is a creative expression hopefully to be enjoyed
like a warm summer breeze or sound of the ocean
& it's something we can have at the press of a button

It is useless to compare strangegrey,

Arnel was sick when they were doing the re-recordings.
I'm hypothesizing that if there were some songs that might have sounded as if Pineda "nailing" Perry's could be when he was getting better already.

I'll just wait for my turn to get "blown away" when they do their gig at the Nissan Pav.
By then I'll make my conclusion.

LOL! Not really dude! I bought Revelation when it came out and I think it's pretty good, but absolutely hate the retreads even after several listens.

Of course, then when I throw in the Escape album, I am once again reminded why Perry is and will always be the superior vocalist of Journey.

I'm not saying anything about buying Revelation... no crime in that (except after all your ranting, its kinda funny... ), but the retreads? Awww, broham, what were you smoking?

And what is it with "Be Good To Yourself"? You're not the first person I've heard say the rehash of it is better.
I just can't even bring myself to play that disc. I grew up on those songs and that particular one I happen to love a lot.

I don't want to post a review type of post..but I'll say this, I saw them in SD the other night. I went in with so-so expectations about Arnel and to be honest, he blew me away with his performance. His vocals were good and I already knew they would be but his stage presence & overall performance was simply awesome. If anyone left there doubting Arnel, they are too biased and hard fucking headed to admit he's *that* good.

Ah, that's horseshit....

if you're sick, don't record. You're laying down tracks for something thats going to mark you for life, good or bad. WTF would you record, knowing it's not your best....

That sounds like a copout to me. "Oh, it's ok...he's really better than that" even though you expect someone's best on a production CD.

That's NOT the way to win out fans when you re-record music that is literally impossible to re-record. If those 2 CD's aren't Arnel's total 100% fucking best, then that means, he will always be an 80% in the mind of whoever listens to it.

Not cool.

Let's dispell any of that shit right now. What's on those CD's are what's on those CDs....lets judge them for what they are, without someone marching in and going "no, really, he was sick, there's more to him than that!" That's a copout!

Who gives a fuck about what other people think...REVELATION is a damn good CD and they know it! AR and crew need to get over their bitterness, it's going to give them ulcers. Hell, I was as pissed as anyone else about what those guys did to Augeri and Soto...but in the end, it's all about the music and it's all water under the bridge now. As a Journey fan past or present, Arnel deserves a fair shake and I believe he has earned our respect. REVELATION is a stellar album, that's all I can say. JOURNEY 2008 doesn't get any better than this, IMO.

I think the rerecords were done as close to the original as possible so if they are played in the backround of a commercial or advertisement a casual fan of the music won't know that it's any different then the original, and before the bitchin starts let me say that most artist's music is actually used for overseas advertising where the language difference makes it not so noticable that someone else is doing the vocals. Remember when Gov. Arnold got all in a tizzy when someone aired a direct TV commercial he did in Japan. Those commercials let him get mega dollars without having to do jack shit and he was embarrassed by that. This is easy money for whoever holds the publishing rights to these songs. That's why there isn't any varience on these songs. Let these songs be used on the cheap for an Asian Karaoke producer and watch the money come in. Irving Azoff maybe many things but he does know how to make a buck or two.

Proud of you SG :)

They're all good songs. Unlike others, I don't have to hate SP to like AP and vice-versa. I CAN CHOOSE to listen to any singer at any time, hell... might as well throw in some Rollie too.

if you're sick, don't record. You're laying down tracks for something thats going to mark you for life, good or bad. WTF would you record, knowing it's not your best....

The timeline forced their hand did it not? With the way AP sounds right now, he's killing it on all accounts. I went to Vegas in March and Chula Vista on Tuesday and he truthfully sounds so much better. There is an air of confidence surrounding him now.
Read my review in the "Daygo" thread. That's Daygo not dayglo like his yellow pants.
