He sounded amazing!! Apparently his "incurrable throat virus" has been cured!! Maybe that is the majic that Rip was speaking about!!

He did an accoustic set.......a set with the band and also sang with Kevin Chalfant. No problem hitting any hight notes!!!

All he needed was some tetracycline and a Q-tip. I could have told them that if they had bothered to ask.
And sometime off that he was promised and was never given

The only tape I saw was for putting over the mouths of the doubters after tonight's performance... haha!

GREAT show, and I commented to someone later how next weekend I'll be seeing Journey, Cheap Trick, Heart, Foreigner and Bryan Adams, but that I'd trade it in immediately for another chance like we had tonight!

Some quick briefs before talking about the show -- ALL the ladies looked stunning (Rhi and Bluejeangirl76 especially), and I enjoyed the great company and conversation. A good few that I'd met in Vegas were here as well as some I was meeting for the first time, so there was no shortage of people to talk to. Special shout-outs to Luvsaugeri, TinaB, DrArrival, Lydia A., DrFU and friend, Faith20yrs, Cheryl, Marty and Sue Moffatt, Jrnyval, and so many others I can't name them all. Dinner was also fantastic, and the silent auction was a great success! I was especially touched by the testimonies and passion from the hosts on the subject of breast cancer awareness -- I didn't realize that so many cancer survivors were among the attendees, and each was recognized by name. Very special!

First up on the entertainment roster was Nick Lynch, who did a very nice little trio of country songs, and really had no trouble winning over a pop rock audience! I look forward to seeing more of him in the future.

Now... Kevin and his band opened and simply kicked A!!! The acoustics in the design of the room combined with the top notch sound setup was simply killer, and within a few songs, people had left the seats and crowded to the front of the stage. When they launched into "I've Got A Lot To Learn About Love", I was singing at the TOP of my lungs! Mind you, the last time I'd seen this played live was when The Storm opened for Bryan Adams, wayyyy back in the early 90's. Kevin is quite the performer, and his voice is nothing short of amazing... plus, he's a nice guy on top of that!

Let me back up for a moment and offer a couple of oven fresh Rip Rokken anecdotes. When the band first arrived, I helped them unload their gear along with a few other guys. Kevin as well was helping, and when he came rolling thru the door with a dolly carrying a stack of precariously perched cases, I offered to take it for him. Within a few feet I hit a bump or something, and a few of the cases fell over onto the floor. I hadn't had a hitch for the entire morning, then this... I apologized to Kevin and he laughed and said he wasn't bothered because it wasn't his gear -- it was the drummer's. :) So later on, I see Kevin working with his equipment at the front of the stage, and he had a tambourine sitting on top of a box. I asked if he needed any help, and he said he'd appreciate it if I would run a long extension cord around to stage left. I started to straighten out the cable and bumped the box with the tambourine and it fell on the floor... not a big deal, but still embarrassing! I think I just looked at him and said something like, "I'm fired, aren't I?" LOL!!! He was totally cool about it...

Also, I had a great time talking to their keyboard player Chuck, who was a super cool guy who looked like a young Tommy Lee! He gave me a shout out from the stage during their set, so afterwards I thanked him and got my picture taken with him. I joked that I couldn't wait to tell people I'd met Tommy Lee and that gave him a big laugh instantly -- he apparently hears the comparison often! Super cool guy, and he'd also gone to see The Dark Knight the night before, so we had fun comparing notes on the film.

Back to the show -- Kevin wrapped up and they took a few minutes of break, after when I noticed they'd set up a couple of chairs close at the front of the stage. So they introduced Steve Augeri, and he and a friend came out with a couple of acoustic guitars, which I got a HUGE kick of, because the last time I'd seen this very 2-person unplugged format was Don Dokken in Dallas, and it was awesome. Yes, I said DOKKEN!!! Now just imagine the same thing, but with Steve A. singing stripped down and reworked Journey songs, and you get the idea -- very cool! I didn't even realize Steve played guitar, and he was very good! I was blown away that the first song was a modified acoustic rendition of "Kiss Me Softly", which is one of my top faves from Arrival. Awesome treat, and closely followed by a few other favorites. Vocally, Steve sounded fantastic, and in this format the real complexity in his phrasing and style shone -- a good bit of soul and gospel-style influence, and far above anything I'd heard from him during his time with Journey. Combine that with his natural charisma as a performer, and I was instantly reminded of why I became an Augeri fan in the first place. I could tell that this event was as special to him as it was for us, and he thanked the audience and mentioned this was his first time in 2 years performing for a group our size.

After the first several songs, Kevin's band came back up to join him and they jammed out some of the major hits including "Don't Stop Believin" and "Separate Ways". All this was capped off by a dual performance with Steve and Kevin, and they were really having a great time.

After the show, both Steve and Kevin hung around long enough to meet, take pictures with, and sign items for anyone and everyone. Steve was looking fantastic, and the dude just doesn't take a bad picture. If he's in it, it's a good picture, plain and simple. And I personally found him to be every bit as down to earth and welcoming as I'd heard from other fans. He really took an interest in everyone that he met, and there was quite a line waiting for their chance to meet him.

I also had a great time meeting Kevin again, and kinda felt I was holding up the line as he was signing my loot, plus I kept buying more loot and he kept signing it. Turns out he has a close relative not far from me, so the next time I run into a Chalfant in my neck of the woods, I'll definitely ask if they know Kevin! Also had fun with his assistant -- a very nice guy that wanted to make sure everyone had a chance to meet either Steve or Kevin, and I noted that he was wearing a Storm all access pass around his neck. I asked him what he would sell it for, and he smiled and said, "It's my only one -- without it, I couldn't even do my job", to which I replied, "Ahh, I understand. So you're saying at least $20 bucks, then?", and he laughed.

As things were winding down, I made my rounds of goodbyes which must have taken another 15-20 minutes. It was a great event for a great cause, and they are planning on doing this next year as well, so if you missed it this time, no worries -- try again in 2009! I certainly plan on returning.

What he ^ said.

I'll give you my rundown in Cliff's Notes --> it was fucking awesome.

Steve sounded great and a few things I particularly enjoyed were:

Faithfully Unplugged... I loved hearing it on guitar only.
Stay Awhile... I wasn't expecting that.
He wrapped up Lights and went right into Stay Awhile and my jaw dropped. THAT WAS SWEEEET!

And Chalfant pulled out Feeling That Way/Anytime and Just The Same Way, which was great.
Chalfant also rocked out some Stone In Love, which got me out of my chair in .02 seconds.
I went up to him later and told him that I do not approve of other people singing that but he was the exception.
(yeah I really said that... I blame 3 martinis... but its true, he totally rocked it)

It was a pleasure meeting Mr & Mrs Augeri, Kevin, and ESPECIALLY all you people that I can now attach a face and voice to your posts! Maria... I'm sorry we didn't get to talk more... things got all crazy and whatnot.

I haven't even been to bet yet and I'm all wired so I'm probably leaving a lot out.

I would attend again in a heartbeat. Awesome party for an important and worthy cause.
A good time was had by all!

I think the bottom line is that they didn't feel he could keep touring year after year, which they want to do. I really hope he tours because I love the Augeri era songs and I fear they are dead unless he keeps them alive...

Congratulations to Dr. Arrival, Butch, Lydia Augeri, and the rest of the JTTC board members and event planners. It was simply an awesome evening. I had a fabulous time, and I think everyone else who attended did as well. It was great to meet so many of the gang from here in embodied form and to reconnect with other folks I don't get to see often enough.

Rip's done a fine job on the extended review of the musical portion (though he did slip Dokken in there, apropos of nothing), so I won't rehash.

What an awesome review, Rip!

That sounds like a lot of fun, and who knows, maybe I will be able to make it next year if they do it again.

I fear you may be right. I suspect Journey will from now on play Perry-era tunes, then fast-forward to 'Revelation', thereby downplaying the entire 1998-2006 era. (" 'Arrival'? What 'Arrival'? Augeri? Who's that?") Unfortunate. There are some real gems on 'Arrival', lyrically and musically connecting those songs with the Escape/Frontiers period.
