Wow! If that holds up, that's a pretty good jump for an album almost two months old that was starting to fall a bit down the charts.

Wow. Is that a top 10 resurgence I'm seeing so far? Hell, not bad. Hope it holds. Pretty cool. :)

I thought in the US, which is what the Billboard counts, the label is "NoMoTa?" They have it as the Euro label Frontiers there...

Jeeeeeezus ......

I was going to start a thread (or include a posting on this one): "over/under" 20,000 sales, and then ask everyone how they thought sales would be this week. This morning, in the shower, I thought: "Nah, better make it over/under 19,000." Oh me of little faith ......

By my count, Journey has played to around 90,993 concergoers so far. Bottom line: people are going to the concerts, hearing the songs (old and new), and starting to go out and buy the album. By August, these sales figures will be very, very solid. (August has some of the bigger venues.)

The first wave of sales were the hardcore fans and "early adopters". This raised 'Revelation' to gold status even before the concerts started.

The second wave of sales are for those who didn't buy the album before the tour started, but who will buy the album shortly before going to see the concert, or after attending the concert (some of whom will have gone to the concerts to see Heart and Cheap Trick). This wave will continue until early October.

-- Prediction #1: this is when "After All These Years" starts climbing into the Top Ten on the Billboard Hot AC chart. The song will get more widespread radio play, thereby helping sell-out remaining venues at the end of the summer and pushing more album sales.

-- Prediction #2: 'Revelation' will be certified platinum soon after the end of the summer tour.

The third wave of sales will be for the casual, lagging fans who (1) begin hearing AATY on the radio or (2) hear that Journey has an album that is platinum. Also, this wave of sales will be supported by sales of the ZVUE mp3 through Christmas.

I'm beginning to agree with you, SJ. I stand by my original estimate: platinum by the end of the tour (Oct. 8th). But now the only question is how quickly it gets to double-platinum.

Important upcoming dates that will boost sales:

* July 22: Journey-branded ZVUE mp3 players go on sale at Wal-Mart -- every one of these sold counts as an album, since they're preloaded with 'Revelation'. I originally guessed 50,000 units (or, 100,000 CDs by RIAA standards), but now I'm thinking multiples of that.

* July 25: Journey appears on CBS Morning Show

What's amazing here is the cross-marketing. The album sales push customers to see the concerts. The concerts push fans to buy the album. The purchase of the mp3 player will count as an album and push purchasers to see the live show. Amazing how it's all working so well ......

I told all of you fuckers that this would happen when the tour started. I heard they had a lot of big "surprises" in store for us. I think the MP3 player is a fucking HUGE deal. I suspect there will be more "surprises" as well. 8)

If they did get on the late shows AND one of the rock songs catches fire on the radio.....we could be talking double platinum

If you see one of those happen, the other might quickly follow. If you get a radio hit, you will get them on late-night tv. If you get them on late-night tv playing a potential radio hit, you might just get that hit.

It's going Double Platinum already. The 2 scenarios being spoken of, while tall orders, would launch this thing into the fucking stratosphere.

Im hoping that one of the surprises would be RockBand and GuitarHero creators should do some promotion like the ZVue did. A JOURNEY THEMED RB or GH equipment and setlist. Isnt that a perfect Thanksgiving and Christmas present?? Im sure kids gonna love it.
Isnt it ironic that The Scarab represented - Self-Generation, Resurrection and Renewal ???

Why not? An entirely possible scenario .....

Here's another one: Journey has a song -- possibly a new one, like "After All These Years" -- prominently placed in a movie, t.v., or commercial ..... This would be the reverse of the marketing for 'Arrival', where the 'Armageddon' soundtrack should have launched Steve Augeri's career with Journey (had the song figured as prominently in the movie as originally anticipated), which would have helped promote sales of 'Arrival'.

Now, with my suggested what-if scenario, the album and the tour went first, a possible movie-soundtrack placement goes second ....

movies have always been one of the major boosters of music albums (particularly an OST), that's for sure.

If Journey doesn't sell one more album this week, they'll have 663,492 'Revelation' CDs sold to-date (at 2 x CDs per album, per RIAA standards).

That's two-thirds the way to platinum, just second week into the U.S. concert tour, with 90% of the amphitheatre seats ahead of them ......

I have a total of 331,746 albums, which translates (based on RIAA standards for a multi-disk set) into 663,492 certifiable CD sales.

My figures are slightly different than what Andrew posted last week. His weekly sales figure was 218 units (or, 436 CDs) higher than mine.

Also, all of the sales of pre-loaded mp3 players (by ZVUE, to be sold at Wal-Mart starting tomorrow) count as one album (x 2 CDs) each, because they come with the album already on them .....

"Somebody" (i.e., band management, or the band, or the album label, or Wal-Mart) has to pay for the audit and certification. Until somebody pays for it, it's certified-nothing. They may have already started the audit process -- don't know if that's true or not -- or they might be waiting to have it done at a certain time (for marketing purposes).

 Please. I'm sure you'd like to think that, but you would probably find yourself bitterly disappointed. They do, however, appreciate your obsession with them.

As for me, who has always leaned more toward being a naysayer and the classification of "wait and see" rather than to get in line in order to hold Neal's jock strap, I understand why the CD is selling like it is. It's not because of Arnel Pineda, although he does have some to do with it. The success is truly pointed mostly toward Wal-Mart. You can't tell me for one minute that a casual Journey fan would jump at the chance to buy the brand new album with the fourth lead singer in a decade for the usual price of a new CD ($12 - $18) rather than buying what just about equals a box set for $12. I am not denying that the concerts and the TV appearances have helped record sales, but the majority of it should go to Wal-Mart. And now, we have Wal-Mart re-releasing the disc with a Zune player? Do I expect that to sell? Sure I do! But, as long as Wal-Mart and Jrny mngt are coming up these crazy package deals, can you truthfully say it's all because of Arnel Pineda and Revelation? I'd say probably not. I still hold firm that if Arrival had the same opportunity and marketing, heck even Generations, Journey would've had the same success.

However, what could very well happen is to reach enough folks with these package deals to get them hooked on this version of Journey, and then hope that the next album can hold up on its own. IF this happens, I can definitely say Journey has finally done what they needed to do to get back into the spotlight and I will be convinced that Journey does NOT need Steve Perry anymore. Otherwise, I'm still just convinced it's genius marketing rather than the music itself, although I DO believe the new CD is very good. However, I also thought Arrival was very good as well.

That's a technicality. It has sold enough units to be certified if they have filed for it to be so. I would imagine they have either already done so or are in the process of doing so.

HH always resorted to unconventional marketing techniques to sell Journey albums. Nobody else was doing what he was. Getting them to play their music at the point of sale, stuff like that. While I think HH is quite the windbag, I do believe he worked his ass off and tremendously helped their record sales back in the 70's and 80's. He did whatever it took to get them moved. I think what we're seeing now is more brilliant marketing. And let's not forget, Journey put out a damn fine record also.

It's a lock to go Double Platinum. They're one-third of the way there already and the domestic tour just started.

2nd singer as far as singing on albums goes. Nobody cares about that anyway. Sane people keep it mostly about the music. And I can't help it that they're giving the fans a great deal. You're making tons of excuses but that won't change the numbers...ever.
