OK...ok...I have to ask about the "pre-tour" warmup show in 94. How did SP sound? Did he do any "improvising" or anything that truly showed off his voice (or what was left of it)?
Details...I need DETAILS!!!!!

I have recently stated here that the sound check was the single best musical moment I have ever witnessed. The show was great - small room, obvious warm up - but surprisingly good. But the sound check was just insane. They did some warm ups for Missing You. If not for me seeing that sound check, I would have never believed he would still sound that good. The guy working the board, who had seen Perry many times from the very start and was a veteran in the industry said he had never heard anything like that. Hard to explain other than to say it was just another level.
Not too sure what was improvised. I don't think there was a lot of that.
I did make one major mistake though. For the way I was able to go, I could not bring a guest. I was so thrilled about the soundcheck that I wanted to get home and tell my wife all about it. Combine that with the well known rumors of Steve Perry's privacy, etc and no way I thought he would come out afterward. So I left right after the last song. Well, I was wrong. A guy I worked with was there and he said perry came out and talked to all the people that stayed. Wanted to shoot myself.
I think there were about 70 people there. It was the full show though. I got into the soundcheck by chance. I live near LA and I was so panicked I would be late, I showed up early and was the only one there. I started chatting with the crew and then sort of just worked my way in. I sat off to the side during the soundcheck. Not sure I was supposed to be in there, but glad I was.
It made me appreciate the depth of his voice, beyond what he could do in the old days witht the highs.

Mine were:
Mountain Aire '86. Awesome, awesome show.
SF Cow Palace. It was Dec 86, and very medicore compared to Mountain Aire back in August. You could sense they were going through the motions to some extent.
Also saw Perry in Seattle for the FTLOSM tour. It was okay. Good to see, but nothing like back in the day.mistiejourney wrote:Became a Journey fan in 1985, so missed all those years of touring.

First show was Departure tour in SF
Saw about half dozen Escape shows
Saw about a dozen Frontiers shows
Saw a gazillion ROR shows
Only saw 4 shows on FTLOSM tour.

Yeah, it was Tim and, I know I'm going to get his name wrong...."Deak"? that were on the PR trip. I remember being disappointed that it wasn't you and Cyndy, but the guys were great to us and I still get goosebumps thinking about it!
