There are two different camps and I'm in the other one. I generally prefer shows to end on a slow song. Rock out for the last song before you leave for the encore come back with a rocker and then a slow song to close out the night. Just my preference. Just most rockers end very cold and slow songs kinda fade away.

I can only remember going to one Rock concert that closed out with a slow song, Styx 1981. Pop artists can get away with it but Rock groups should always close with high octane songs. That's what rock is all about. I hope Journey's not going soft on us.

No, only because He who shall not be named would have to go into the wayback machine to pull that one off. No disrespect but the banshee wails at the end of that song are the defining moment and as good as Arnie is, I don't think he could do it justice. That song truly belongs to the kitten puncher.

I've only seen a few bands pull off ending with a slow song, and when it works, it's usually a REALLY quiet, intimate moment...the best example I can think of was Depeche Mode's encore in 2005 which was the usual climatic "Never Let Me Down" followed by the incredibly hushed and gentle "Goodnight Lovers." (And think what you want about them, they're an arena rock band on the same energy level as, say U2, even though it's mostly keyboard-based stuff)

Genesis ending the reunion tour with "The Carpet Crawlers" was also kind of surprising in how well it worked, but that also was effective more in a symbolic, career-summation way, in that hardcore fans (And, presumably, the band) feel that it represents the band more than most of their hits, so they chose to end the show with it.

For oldies rock bands like Journey though, you gotta end it on a high-energy note. Just like I wouldn't want to see Def Lep end with "Love Bites" or Aerosmith with "What It Takes," "Faithfully" is kind of a bad closing song. I always thought starting the encore with "Faithfully" and going into "Be Good To Yourself" would be the perfect Journey encore.

I think you're right. However, I really would like to see him try something in that range. If you notice they aren't having deen sing the difficult songs anymore. They seem to be trusting Arnel to pull off whatever choose to they play and he's coming through.

I think a 2 punch knock out would be something along the lines of Faithfully or Why Can't This Night, etc.. and then close out the night with something like Wheel, Keep On Runnin, Seperate Ways, etc.

Btw...have they ever closed with Sep Ways? That would be an awesome end of night surprise.

For the 2003 VH1-Classic concert with Styx and REO Speedwagon, that's exactly how they ended the Cincinnati show.

It's an okay way to end the concert, I s'ppose, but my preference is end it with a rocker, or at least something more upbeat. Also, I've heard Arnel's version of "Faithfully" three times now ('Revelation' Disc 2, 'Revelation' DVD, and "The Ellen Show" website). So far I've thought that it's one of his weaker songs.

'06 tour with JSS. Went to two shows and they both ended with Seperate Ways. Crowd eats it up.

This song was a disappointment chart-wise - I don't think they would play it, because it was a 5th release of ROR and got little airplay. Now why it was the 5th release of ROR (Instead of say the second) is a whole different story. The singles chosen off that album were a bit screwed up IMO. I would have released BGTY, WCTNGOF, GCHI, IBAWY, and then Suzanne. But what do I know..

LOVIG TOUCHIN SQUEEZIN has to be the one, but hell its not even in the setlist this summer... everyone leaving singing nanananananana IS AMAZING!! and much better than the downer with faithully....GREAT SONG BY THE WAY.. just not a closer.
