Not sure what band your listening to, but the fact of the matter is that, Arnel Pineda's voice is not bigger than Steve Perry's voice, or was in his prime. And it clearly shows when you compare the classics of each singer. Pineda is not even recognised as one of the worlds best singers, where to Steve Perry has been labled "the voice" among other greats. Perry's the best this band ever had, period!. It's his legacy, anyone else is playing tribute, and doing it graciously, but... the best era is long gone!.

I didn't even want to get involved in this thread, but I'm stepping in to say bravo to this ^. There's no denying that Arnel is talented. But bigger or better voice than Steve Perry? Errrrmmm... no. As a substitute he fits the bill but that's all he is in this case. Anyone that sings with this band is under that impossible shadow, and subject to unfair comparisons. You can't compare these guys to Perry. And the sad sorry attempt with those stupid rerecords was just pathetic.

Lets get real. You can't compare Steve Perry to Steve Perry anymore. When comparing the two, you're comparing not only two different styles and era, but two different area's..and by area I mean age. 40 Year Old Arnel Pineda... VS 20-some year old Steve Perry. Come on. But IMO you can compare today vs today. Judging by Perry's age alone lets say he re-records the GH. You want to talk about bad? Arnel is far more qualified today than Steve would be, and I give him kudos for even agreeing to such a thing (I'm sure he didn't have a choice, eh? :-)) I'll bet my house that if Steve Perry comes out to sing NWA, he wouldn't be able to hit half of those notes if his life depended on it. They cross each other out. 80's Steve Perry vs 08's Pineda-Winner: Perry. '08 Perry Vs '08 Pineda -Winner: Pineda.

Whew! I believe I used the wrong word! By bigger, I meant the voice itself--limited to the size of the sound waves coming from the vocal chords and being picked up by my ears---nothing more nothing less! It has nothing to do with things beyond my humble ears---i.e., not intended to compare the quality, prestige, legacy, etc! Goodness gracious!
I was avoiding to use the word "manly" although that's the first word that came to my mind when I was writing the post---because I thought it may offend people. I did not expect the word bigger to elicit such an unexpected response. Anyway, it's misuse of word on my part--and misinterpretation on yours--no harm done--I suppose.

After reading all of that, I still don't know what your point is. People like different things, and have different opinions on what success looks likes and means. Just enjoy what you enjoy, and move on. I'm not sure why people need to call out other people because they don't agree with them. Boggles.

I will have to come back later and read this or not. I can only read posts this long if I post them, I cannot read other peoples long posts it is like nails on a chalk board.
But from the title below I will make my reply.

"STOP WHINING & MAKING EXCUSES! PLEASE!"

I cannot agree with you more, if your gonna go out and drink a bunch of whine and just get totally whined out, do not go home bitching if you wake up drunk in a gutter, sleeping with the Reverend Jesse Jackson or maybe even you were so whined out you voted for Carock Obama?

I HAD A FRIEND that would go bar hopping and he would go whining all night, every place he would drink a whole bottle of whine and would start making excuses as to why his wife left him, why he drove a truck now with two head of sheep in the back, why he moved into a trailer park yadda yadda, you get my drift?
But the reason I quit hanging out with him is because when he got totally whined drunk off his ASS he would sing Steve Perry Karaoke. The guy was absolutely amazing no matter how drunk, he sounded as good as Perry no shit. But when I heard him sing night after night and his voice would haunt me, thoughts of Perry on stage entered my mind and that is who I would see singing karaoke in the bar in my mind not my friend.
When I drank more the thought of passing out and spooning Steve Perry in a cheap hotel after a night of karaoke would start entering my mind.
So rather than letting that happen, then make excuses, I quit whining and just let it go and quit going out whining. I knew I could make no excuse the next morning if that were to happen. The best one I came up with was, it was below zero and Steve was dying from frostbite out in the middle of the woods, so I had to spoon him to keep him from dying. But the weather was like 90 degree's in summer in the city so it would have never flew.

So yes, stop whining and making excuses, SAY NO TO DRUGS AND ALCOHOL.!

Well, the fact of the matter is - that IF Steve Perry were come back? he simply would not have hit half the notes he use to, and that's because it is Steve Perry.

I like the success they are having... THE ONLY REASON THIS IS A SUCCESS THIS time around is the YOU TUBE FACTOR.... FACE IT---
ellen show...why did she know about arnel.. you tube... CBS sunday morning what was the main story.. YOU TUBE..
but with the CD selling well now and all the sold out shows... that is a great thing for Journey.. but i still love the original (perry) and after what happend
to Augeri and JSS i dont have great opinions of this once AMAZING BAND. So scucces in 2008 is what they have but at what cost???

You know, I was kind of on the fence with the sales as far as what was the the driving factor behind the success. However, since the guys hit the road in the U.S there has ban actual sales spike. If that isn't a sign that people are digging the new music and the concerts in general, well then I don't know what is. I know the MP3 thingie is out and I'm sure that is going help, but a sales spike certainly seems indicative of something other than "impulse buying." When it's all said and done I think this package will be minimum Double Platinum and possibly Triple Platinum. Mind you, that is selling 1 million packages for Double Platinum and 1.5 million for Triple Platinum. I don't make the rules, but I'll be more than happy play by them.

I'm all for exchanging ideas back and forth. But that's not what you did. You attacked people for not having the same opinion on a topic as you do. The title of your thread says it all. Express your opinion, I'm glad to hear it. But don't talk down or chastise people from the get go, and expect all to just accept your statements without challenge. You were the one that started off on a negative tone. Sorry that is so tough for you to understand.

I will try to interpret the original post.
I will try to sum it up with liberal numbers. At the very least 51% of consumers bought the new package to listen to the new cd and because the price point is very attractive . At the very most 49% of the people bought the package because they don't know that SP is no longer in the band, they thought the greatest hits included in the set were the originals, their impulse shoppers that will pick up anything that looks like a bargain regardless of the quality of the product. The final analysis is the reason the record is selling so well is because the majority (51% or more) want to hear the new music and are attracted by the low price. So.........new music wins!

I think that is what the original post was saying but I'm already confused by what I just wrote. :?

I've been trying to point out on another thread that surely the people are not that DUMB as what SJ pointed out, there is a Filipino dude at the back of the album! How can they miss that and not know that Perry isn't on the band anymore?

This is hilarious... NOT!

Soooooo... you can't compare the 40 year-old Arnel to the 20-something Steve Perry, but it's ok to compare a 40 year old Arnel to a late 50's Steve Perry???? Someone PLEASE tell me the rationale in that??? :?

Steve Perry was 29 when he first joined Journey in the late 70's. That would make him about 35 when Journey released Frontiers. Considering the tour schedules that Journey followed back in the day, there is NO way in hell that Arnel could hold a candle (OR a jock-strap) to Steve Perry in his prime. Good try, but no bananas.

Dude, it's not even platinum yet, hell it hasn't even been certified gold yet....and so long as you adjust sales for the walmart-discount, it hasn't even touched generations salesyet ......stop proclaiming this shit with RIAA certifications it hasn't EARNED.

Listen, I'm on board with revelations....I've seen the light and I think Arnel is a great vocalist....but the more you start giving this shit acolades it hasn't *earned* it makes it look like when it actually *does* earn them, they wont be genuine and justified.

Call a spade a spade....you and Revelation will garner more credibility for it.

The free expressions of differing opinions without fear of censorship/reprisals are what makes this board so great . If you don't like someone's opinions, give a counter. There's no need to call out/gripe about it. And, if you want a homogenized, Journey worshipping environment, just go to their official website forum, where there's plenty of kool-aid drinking there.
