It's simply not worth the risk. Arnel is used to singing for long periods of time 5 or 6 nights a week, but the Phillipines have a naturally vocal friendly climate that many parts of the U.S. simply don't have.

HH talked about tour 'density' once, meaning the amount of shows that it takes to clear expenses. No doubt tours today are more expensive than ever. (I'd love to see their gas bill!) If a singer submits, and the tour doc keeps an eye on his throat, then why not make all the jack you can?

Read once (years ago) where Billy Joel wanted to slow down because he kept breaking fingers on tour, but said he couldn't. He liked too much to play, and the extra money was great.

I guess when you consider all the paychecks for EVERYONE involved (roadies, techs, crew, families, etc.), profits can be slim. I don't think it's greed. I think it's just business.

Something I've never understood...is why do baseball teams have to play 200 games every year?

It's not smart business...they ruin this guy and they're finished.

While I won't say "finished" I would say that they'd be letting the "Golden Goose" go. This guy stands to make them more money in Asia than they could dream of. Shit, he's already wildly popular here. They must be so proud. And deservedly so. 8)

I agree. I believe it's fair to say that---while there are potential good vocalist alternates or replacements, it would be pretty hard for Journey to find one coming from a new regional market---with a combination of having a great voice, a great story, a great work ethic, and a great personality.

There's still some slack in the rope they're hanging Arnel with.
Deen can sing MF, etc.

I agree it's reprehensible how Journey are hanging Arnel at all,
given what they should know by now.
What's that definition of insanity again?

Just a thought, but maybe Deen's sick of singing. Maybe one of the reasons the other guy is gone because Deen didn't want to get stuck singing "Open Arms" and "Faithfully" for the next five years.

Maybe Deen wised up to the fate of Journey lead singers.

Just my 2 cents, but I agree with SJ, I think they view Arnel as the Golden Goose... And, based on Cain and Schon's age, they will try to rake in the $$$$ over the next couple years with maybe another CD and couple tours, with no concern of wrecking Arnel's voice ala Perry/Augeri-style, then retire Journey, and ride off into the sunset.

C'mon, people. You all are talking like Schon & Cain are AP's Mom & Dad. Geez, Pineda is a grown man responsible for himself. Besides, he's a hired-gun - a three year contract renewable annually. The band doesn't have to care about him one iota. If he blows a cord, and they still want to do Journey, they'll simply call someone else.

Does your employer care about you? Hell no! You can be replaced...and so can anyone else in any other job.

They care about him, trust me. This guy is going to make them wildly rich if they can keep him healthy. Augeri and Soto had very little unique about them, but this guy certainly does. Not to mention that he'll be like Elvis in Asia. He's literally worth his weight in gold.

Next all-new album in 2010, probably closer to 2012...with a different lineup.

I'm sure if I told you in 1986 that they would still be around in 2008 with a Filipino lead singer selling out 20,000 person sheds you would have looked at me like I had 3 dicks.

Journey will be around in 2012 with at least another album out.

I see Ross retiring sometime soon however... to get replaced by Ricky Phillips or Jack Blades.... or better yet, they go on a Youtube search to find their next bassist, and the winner is a charismatic Ohioan twentysomething.

Oh, yeah. Sure. That narrows it down.
Ohio is full of disgruntled post-teenage musicians. It would take years to search them all! :P

Question is, how many disgruntled twentysomethings would have the urge to post themselves playing Journey basslines on Youtube? ;)

How many disgruntled twenty year olds know Journey basslines? (Reference Dan's response above for the answer to this. )
And Prog, you're not a twenty-something yet. You actually need a number after the two to constitue a "something"... you're just a... twenty-nothing right now.

I was once a twenty-nothing. It was a good year. I didn't do much other than party and sell earrings as the Assistant Manager at the Asheville, NC Claire's. Buy two get one free! ...Holidays were hell... "Are you sure you don't need this shitty pen/pencil/calculator set?" Ah yes. Good times.

Hey being a twenty-nothing hasn't been too bad so far. I've partied twice and have held a job as a glue-gunner down at the local box factory. I saw Airbourne live, took in a NASCAR race and went to my first-ever fish fry.

Doin' big things.
