With Arnel - one can see he still has to work at it, which is fine, but long-term he must master singing technique to survive.

Arnel has the God given talent to do this, he just needs the time to master the technique... just like the man he's being compared to had time to.

I think most believe that's not going to happen (time to master technique) unless AP does it on his own somehow. They're not looking at the long haul. AP is the Golden Goose and they need those eggs now.

AP will be remembered and respected for giving Journey new life but there's not enough time or opportunity for him to rival Perry's contributions.

... for the most part i agree with ya... Becoming more technically proficient as a vocalist is something Arnel has to accomplish, or else he won't survive... we all know that. Thats why I think comparing him to Perry is just flat wrong right now...

Given that his role in Journey is now his life's focus, and the reports I'm reading are that he's already embraced the regimen required, I'd venture he's already making progress. It is evident in the progress he's made - Chile to now.

But in order for him to be considered in the same league as "he who shall not be named", Arnel is gonna have to move past his God given talent, and take it to the next level... just as ESpee did.

Only time will tell if Arnel can incorporate enough technique to raise his game the way Espee did.

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

Oops, I guess SJ isn't around now to answer my question. Just some silly bantering between a drunk Gator, Natalie and Stevew. And some serious analysis between SC and Slucero.

Some good points there, Slucero.

I gave Arnel a rounded-up 70 for Chile.
Voice was thinning at certain registers, leaning almost towards a Johnny Mathis timbre
on the sustains. I agree with the screaming/yelling (...the lack of "head voice"...)
Accent was just too strong for me, and I'm Filipino, so this isn't a racist comment.
I'm just accustomed to favorite old songs sung without an accent.
His talking to the crowd was a disaster, precisely because of his accent.

Maybe 72-75 for Las Vegas I.
Less yelling, and he seemed to have a smidgen more confidence.
More importantly, the rest of Journey seemed to be having fun again.
Based on Tube clips, I'd say he's running in the low 80's right now.
If his voice lasts on this current touring diet, he might be at 90 by December.

I hope he gets to see more of the cities he visits than just the concert venue.
Some sort of cultural immersion will help him better relate to the songs, and
to his audience. It'll also help his conversational English. On more than just one
YouTube clip from the current US tour, I'd hear the fans rocking out, happy
at the end of a song, turning to one another and ask "What did he say?"

It's clear that there's a cultus well-developed around SP, and also around
SA and JSS. For certain fans of these past Journey frontmen, Arnel will simply
never be good enough. In some cases, even Journey can't be Journey anymore,
without their favorite vocalist out front.

LOL.... fuck that shit.

Chin up, wech. You can hold the torch for Arnel. It is very clear, the J fanbase is fractured with allegiance split according to whichever lead singer one has a connection to. You should have seen the internet wars between fans of SA and fans of SP (the loons and the wigglers). For the most part, I would say people have shown admirable restraint in giving Arnel good marks. Ask any wiggler, and they'll tell you SA was ripped mercilessly--for no good reason.

Hi :)
I can't say I'm an Arnel fan, as I'm really just a Journey fan.

I'm terribly fond of SP's singing, and while I may have some smpathy for my countryman AP,
I've also recently been getting into the SA-fronted material. Hope to check out some of JSS's live
work with Journey, but it seems fiendishly hard to find.

Good for you. And there is also another faction; many people have stated that they are just Journey fans, loving all the incarnations. This is what makes the world go round, we have a favorite, but yet there is a common bond, and that is love of their music.

no, no, no. I'm just getting sleepy. I gave up drinking a long time ago, when I was pregnant with my 1st. Now, I'm practically a teetotaler. We are a no-smoking, no-drinking family - for real. Don't make fun.

Jon aggravated me a bit in Dallas. I understand that in places in Texas, they do the knee slappin/boot stomping shit, but it has no place at a rock concert. It's an insult to the general populous. I give him credit for trying to engage the Texas audience, but if you're going to do it that way, hold the concert at Billy Bobs.

As for Anrel, I've seen the Chile DVD, and it was fine for his first show. The March Las Vegas show showed many improvements. From the boots of Europe and the shows leading up to Dallas, he just got better and better. The Dallas show was one of the best Journey concerts I've seen. He was fantastic. He just needs to refine his on stage antics a little and he's all the way there. I'm totally impressed with his progress.
Friga likes cowboys, he was trying to "get some fresh grade AA meat"

Crazy Deb has a picture of Jon's cowboy boots under the Faz, taken just for you, Steve...

If she ever unloads her camera, maybe she'll post it.

I wasn't a big fan of his quasi break-dancing moves.

I agree that he jumps around to much. It bothers me vocally more the anything else. But by stage presence I meant that he owns the songs and the performance.

Meh,,,,I don't see it. I think he tries too hard.

Explain please! Seriously, what does that mean? Arnel is a performer and thats what he get paid to do. SP ran all over the place and did his little circle dance, which is cool 8) Was he trying to hard ? SA moved around a little bit, was he not trying enough? :?

I'll tell you what. If Steve Smith's drumset was a chic, it would have filed a restraining order against Perry. He spent half his time on stage staring at that damn thing rather then the audience. I understand he's a recluse but it irks me that people always fawn over his stage presence which to me was the weakest part of his act, and in the same breath take Arnel to task even though he physically interacts with the audience.

Are you HIGH, G-Boy?....or should I say WERE you high!!

If you turn this into a competition between SP and AP, SP is going to win HANDS DOWN~ for me!!!
It all comes down to the voice singing the songs!!! Steve Perry could've performed those songs with a bag over his
head chained to the drum set and he is still THE MAN!!!!

That said.................AP is doing a GREAT JOB singing the songs!!

There were things that bothered me when I saw them in Dallas....but that is ME!!!

The bottom line is that AP has gotten the audience back on their feet and singing along!!!
The excitement is very contagious and Neal does seem very happy!!!
If you are fortunate enough to attend a show, you WILL get your money's worth!!!
No grade from me....loved the show!!!

Actually the second time I saw Journey I was getting high in the last row against the wall, behind the stage. Perry's anti social behavior worked in our favor since he was always facing our direction :D No one's saying Arnel is a better singer then Perry. We're talking about the people who bag on Arnel's stage presence. I think Arnel is more active and interacts just as well if not better then Perry did. When you sing as well as Perry did, you didn't have to be the most dynamic guy on stage (or the best looking obviously). His voice made all that irrelevant. But there is no need to degrade Arnel's abilities on stage. The guy is proving to be a showman in his own right, much to the chagrin of certain people who just can't wait for him to fail.

I always thought he went back there during guitar solos and instrumental sections so Neal or Jon would be in the spotlight, just like he never went back to the riser when Smitty did his solo part.

Loved the restraining order line, though!
