Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) on Friday announced an “Emergency Economic Plan” that would give families a stimulus check of $1,000 each, funded in part by what his presidential campaign calls “windfall profits from Big Oil.”

Friday’s proposal says Obama “is proposing to offset the cost of his emergency energy rebates over the next five years by enacting a windfall profits tax on big oil companies.”

“Obama simply asks that big oil companies contribute a reasonable share of the windfall profits they receive from high oil prices over the next five years to pay for emergency assistance for families right now,” the campaign says.

Some of you may have heard yesterday about Exxons' huge profits of over $11 Billion for the quarter. What you didn't hear was this little tidbit:...

According to CNN, Exxon Mobil once again reported the largest quarterly profit in U.S. history Thursday, posting net income of $11.68 billion on revenue of $138 billion in the second quarter.
That profit works out to $1,485.55 a second.

Buried in the story we also find that "In addition to making hefty profits, Exxon also had a hefty tax bill. Worldwide, the company paid $10.5 billion in income taxes in the second quarter, $9.5 billion in sales taxes, and over $12 billion in what it called 'other taxes.'"

MP: In other words, Exxon Mobil paid $32.361 billion in taxes in the second quarter, which works out to $4,114 in taxes per second.
Another way to look at it - Exxon paid almost $3 in taxes ($32.361 billion) for every $1 in profits ($11.68 billion), see chart

Hey Barry, YOU ARE AN IDIOT!

Oh, I feel SO sorry for Exxon. NOT!

I'm a little more optimistic about this. Much of the current economic crisis is due to perceived instability in terms of both foreign policy and domestic management of the economy. Ending the war in Iraq and getting back to focusing on domestic (esp. economic) issues will go a long ways towards restoring investor confidence. As soon as Americans see that Obama is moderate democratic, ala Clinton, things will settle down considerably. I could easily see some improvement by the end of a first Obama term and dramatic improvement by the end of a second term.

Anyone that thinks that either Obama or McCain are going to do much in terms of making the economy better are more than likely sadly mistaken. I hope I'm wrong but I don't think I am.

Due to the nature of economic cycles, recessions usually don't last too long. If this current one were to last for more than five years, it would be one of the longest in U.S. history. The timing is right, however, to make some difficult decisions regarding the economy and to get it back on more solid foundation.

I should probably stay out of this thread, but I just can't help myself. The title bugs me a bit. The Democratic party would not embrace a guy that they thought was an idiot. The Republicans did, however I'm sure unknowingly, embrace and get one elected. :D
I like to sit out on the front porch, where the birds can see me, eating a plate of scrambled eggs, just so they know what I'm capable of.

Most politicians are only in it for the power and prestige. That is, by definition, an idiot. Obama qualifies for sure.

Bush totally bent each one of us over and fucked us in the ass.

Obama is the opposite of Bush.

Why are you surprised that people are flocking to Obama?

Dick head. Only Congress can spend money. Reagan and Bush had a Democrat controlled Congress and Clinton had a Republican controlled Congress. Guess what Bush II has?
