My co worker and I went to a china buffett one day for lunch. A male seated us and brought us our drinks and we went through the buffett twice before our extra dishes were removed from our table and we never were asked if we wanted a refill of our drinks. At the end of our meal, a young lady who we had only seen once during our meal brought us our bill and stood there and ASKED for a tip. Literally, asked for one. At a buffett. Unbelievable.

I called the resturant later in the day and expressed to the manager how inappropriate I thought it was. Apparently, she had just started and he said, "she no be here next time you come". I stressed how it wasn't my intention in any way to get her fired, I just wanted her to know it was not at all appropriate to ASK for a tip! I don't know wether she is still working there or not, I've only been back once since then.

You go girl...that's just as bad as having a tip jar at Mickie D's....WTH?????

I always tip 20% to waitresses. But they make less than minimum wage. I don't tip as much to delivery drivers. I assume they make at least minimum wage plus like someone else mentioned.....there is usually a delivery charge on top of the bill. I usually only tip delivery guys a couple of bucks.

Yes, but I work hard for my money, and I expect them to work hard for my money as well. If they are going to give me shitty service, then I'm not going to dote bills on them just out of sympathy. And if they give me great service, then they'll get a great tip. That's how it works. :)

Yes I think that tip was overly generous but better to be that way instead of stingy.

This is touching on something that bothers me. Should good service be based on tip size?

I tip to get EXCEPTIONAL service....why should someone get an exorbinant amount for just doing his/her job?

If I deliver someone's mail really fast, I don't get a tip. Just saying....

As I am currently a server/ bartender, i consider your comments to be unfair to say the least. You tip someone because they are serving you. that is the basis of a tip. You tip more if they do more, and you tip less if they do less. As a mail carrier, you do not have to deal with people telling you just how and when and why every thing needs to come. You put the mail where your designated, when its designated, and thats that. You dont recieve less money if you get busy and cant get someones package to them within 15 minutes do you? I also live in AZ where before tips, we are making $3.90 a hour... now I dont know where you work, and in which state, but i am willing to guess that you make considerably more than that. You have obviously never worked in the food industry. Think about just what a person is doing for you the next time you go out to eat.

Servers, and drivers and such make less than miniumum wage because the tips compensate for the difference between state mandated min. wage to the companys min. wage. Its a business practice to provide more services for less money.

Delivery drivers make less than minimum too? I thought they made minimum.

Sara when I was a waitress (along time ago) I made $2.01/hr when minimum wage was $3.35. The factor your tips into your wage. Usually it worked out fine because I worked at a nice place and made good money. But at the end of the night when you had to check out, you had to declare a certain minimum percentage of your sales as tips (for tax puposes) I think back then it was 8% (because tipping rate back then was 15%) So if you had a crappy night and not good tips.....you had to declare the 8% wether you made that much or not!!

There are some great references for tipping out there, and since the rules keep changing, I sometimes have to look at them and catch up on what's expected these days.

In restaurants with table service, I ALWAYS tip at least 20% or more, and never less than $1 for anything, even a cup of coffee. Heck, I'll even tip a bartender $1 for getting me a glass of water. For less than good service, I'll tip around 15%, but one thing I'll never do is leave an "insult" tip like some people do -- like a dime or something. Best just not to tip at all.

For self-serve restaurants like buffets and stuff where someone buses your table, not as much is expected, but at least a buck or two if it's cheap (which still may amount to 20% due to the low cost).

Delivery, a few bucks depending on the ticket and the service -- if someone went way out of their way to do something special, I'll reward them. I used to deliver pizzas for extra cash when I was 19, and this one guy always requested I stop by the grocery store and pick up some items for him... LOL! He was a GREAT tipper, and usually gave me $7-$9, so I was always happy to take his order! Don't tip delivery guys, and it's a good way to keep them from going out in the future.

In fact, I had a great way of dealing with cheap-ass tippers -- I remember this one dude who uses to ask for his change and tell me to "keep the silver"... haha! Thanks for the nickel and dime, bro! So we came up with something called the "Luthor Bill" -- GREAT idea. You take a $1 bill and just practically destroy it, wear it down, tear it near in half and tape it, and then to top it off we'd draw a mustache on Wasington and change his name to "Luthor"... LOL! So anyway, when you are giving one of these cheap tippers their money back, you always put that one on top. They most likely will look at it for a second, then give it back to you as a tip. Put it back in your case and take a nice clean $1 bill out for yourself. But some people were so cheap they kept the bill, and it took another 10-15 minutes to make another one. Those dudes, I NEVER went back.

The hardest thing for me to get used to, though, being old-school and traditional, is tip jars. I HATE them, but have finally started adding to some depending on the place and how well I like the people. It's especially bad when a place is 100% self-serve on drinks, silverware, etc., and all they do is take your money at the register. I did research this and the best resources said not to feel obligatory about adding to tip jars -- that they were volunteer only. And those things are starting to show up in Subways all over the place -- what's next, McDonald's? Pay your freaking employees, for goodness sake, and don't expect the customers to make up for bad wages. At LEAST come to my table and refill my drink or something, and I'll always tip.

Ooh, this is a good point you bring up. I come across these at coffee shops typically. So, what I'll do is, since it is hard to determine in the moment I am handed my change from ordering how my service and drink will be, I tip based on my previous experience there. Like I go in this morning and yesterday my coffee wasn't so good, in fact, they royally fkd up my macchiato. So I'd probably just throw some coins in there. Tomorrow, since my drink was killer (thank God, I needed it) I'll put in a buck. Which is about 25%. Not bad.

Of course, problem with tip jars and people like me is that I rarely carry cash. I debit everything. Hard to throw the $1.67 change from that $5 you just spent when its electronic.

I'm mildly annoyed by the "party of 8 or more automatic tip" thing but my one HUGE pet peeve is places that automactically put the tip on the bill for you! There was a comedy club here in town(that oddly enough just closed down last week) that did that and it drove me crazy. *I* will determine what I'm going to tip, not YOU!

Here's timing...I just found this!

THINGS YOUR WAITER WON'T TELL YOU (Reader's Digest)

Avoid eating out on holidays and Saturday nights: The sheer volume of customers guarantees that most kitchens will be pushed beyond their ability to produce a high-quality dish.

There are almost never any sick days in the restaurant business: A busboy with a kid to support isn't going to stay home and miss out on $100 because he's got strep throat. And these are the people handling your food.

When customers' dissatisfaction devolves into personal attacks, adulterating food or drink is a convenient way for servers to exact covert vengeance. Waiters can and do spit in people's food.

Never say "I'm friends with the owner." Restaurant owners don't have friends. This marks you as a clueless poseur the moment you walk in the door.

Treat others as you want to be treated. (Yes, people need to be reminded of this.)

Don't snap your fingers to get attention: Remember, we have shears that cut through bone in the kitchen.

Don't order meals that aren't on the menu. You're forcing the chef to cook something he doesn't make on a regular basis. If he makes the same entree 10,000 times a month, the odds are good that the dish will be a home run every time.

If you find a waiter you like, always ask to be seated in his or her section. Tell all your friends so that they'll start asking for that server as well You've just made that waiter look indispensable to the owner. The server will be grateful and take good care of you.

If you can't afford to leave a tip, you can't afford to eat in the restaurant. Servers could be giving 20-40 percent to the busboys, bartenders, maitre d', or hostess.

Always examine the check. Sometimes larges parties are unaware that a gratuity has been added to the bill, and they tip on top of it. Waiters "facilitate" this error. It's dishonest, it's wrong -- but they do it all the time.

If you want to hang out, that's fine, but increase the tip to make up for money the server would have made if he or she had another seating at that table.

Never come in 15 minutes before closing time. The cooks are tired and will cook your dinner right away. So while you're chitchatting over salads, your entrees will be languishing under the heat lamp while the dishwasher is spraying industrial strength, carcinogenic cleaning solvents in their immediate vicinity.

Then eat at home. I agree wholeheartedly with the "party of 8" rule. People shouldn't go to work and generally have to "guess" if they're going to get paid for their biggest orders.

As a matter of fact, I DO! I don't eat out often at all. I can cook better then most resturants anyway! :p~~~~~

But if they are that worried about whether they are going to get paid...seriously, get a a different job! I worked at a resturant two days. I got a ten cent tip. That was enough for me, thanks!
