8 Month Old Gift from Steve

Postby Playitloudforme » Tue Aug 05, 2008 11:07 am

I'm a bit stunned, so bear with me...

I was at home today after work, when my son came in and handed me a note. He said it was on "my car". "MY" car is a Nissan with the license plate called "OHPERRY". And a license frame that says Long Live Steve Perry.

Yes... I'm a loon. Deal.

anyway...

The note said "I have a signed X-mas from Steve Perry for you. Call me if you want it. Your neighbor, Mark". Followed by Mark's phone number.

Quoi???

I almost didn't call. I'm glad I did.

Mark said that he lives up the street, he's seen my car for months now, and mentioned the license plate to a friend of his. A friend of a friend of a friend thing.... and the next thing we know, Mark ends up with a signed by Steve card for me. They didn't know my name, so it's not made out to me personally, but still... supposedly yanked out just for me because of my license plate. He apologized to me for having held onto it for so long (in his glove compartment in his car), but he was afraid someone would steal the card if he left it out on my car. Finally occurred to him to write me a note.

It's a ROR picture. It's definitely Steve's signature.

Awwww.

Thank you Steve. 8 months late, but I got my Xmas card. Ya'll are too damn cool for words.

I'm still gushing like a damn school girl. And Mark, ya'll are too cool.. thank you!

I have Journey stickers on the car and a Strange Medicine sticker too... really hard to miss. From what Mark said, they let him know of a Perry fan with the license plate called "Oh Perry"... and that was what got me the card. I hope it's a legitimate story... cause I'm just walkin' around stupid right now. Shit eating grin... booyah.

Liking the guy is one thing. Augeri was a nice enough guy, but I NEVER really understood those who went on and on about the guy's voice. I think if people are honest with themselves, Augeri was a VERY average singer, who had ZERO range! The guy was ALWAYS out of his league, trying to sing the Journey catalog. I certainly give the guy credit for hanging in as long as he did. Some of his fans who make him out to be this remarkable singer simply astonish me. There is an interesting youttube video of "Open Arms" out there of Perry, Augeri, and Arnel singing various verses of the song. Watch the video, and you'll be struck, IMMEDIATELY, how little power Augeri had, when compared to both Perry and Pineda. I'm honestly stunned that Neal carried on with this guy's lack of power for so many years. By EVERYONE'S account, Steve Augeri is a very nice human being. That said, being nice doesn't cut it (at least for Neal, it usually doesn't)!

I always thought Augeri had a pretty decent voice towards the beginning of his tenure with the band before they toured the poor guy to death. He wasn't Perry by any stretch, or even Arnel at this point, but I gotta say I thought he brought something to the table. I think in leu of power, he did bring a certain emotional factor to it. Talent aside, it was pretty damn cool to see someone who had dreamed of a kind of BIG TIME moment like that and finally having it come true, much like Arnel is experiencing now. I think that kind of passion made up for the lack of power/intensity/whatever that Augeri may have lacked. IMO he definitely deserves serious recognition in the history of Journey.

BTW, awesome gift to receive Playitloudforme!! :D

Thanks for your opinion, now heres mine. First of all capitalizing or the  doesn't mean you know anything, which you prove by saying Augeri was/is a VERY average singer. Is he Steve Perry no! But who is? His ability to sing the SP Journey catalog has nothing to do with him being a VERY good singer. There is a lot of music from the SA Journey catalog that is GREAT. If you don't like it fine, but why always take the opportunity to say something negative? BTW you misspelled from.

Sure, he had a "decent" voice. I liked the guy's voice, a lot, on his own material. I was merely making the point that Augeri NEVER had the power to sing the back catalog. That isn't his fault, and doesn't make him a bad guy.

Loneman1 wrote: before they toured the poor guy to death.

Journey tours EVERYONE to death, and Arnel will be their next victim!

Loneman1 wrote:
He wasn't Perry by any stretch

Agreed, but many of Augeri's over-zealot fans went out of their way to make him sound like he had more talent in his index finger than Perry had in his entire being, which was simply laughable!

Loneman1 wrote:
or even Arnel at this point

I also agree with this. Arnel has MAJOR power and is at least qualified to sing in the upper register (something that Augeri's voice was simply never right for). I still Arnel needs to learn how to control his voice, but there is no question that the guy has the power to sing the back catalog.

Loneman1 wrote:

Yes...he brought Neal the ability to keep sending those alimony checks out, for another 8 years

Loneman1 wrote: Talent aside, it was pretty damn cool to see someone who had dreamed of a kind of BIG TIME moment like that and finally having it come true

From a human interest perspective, I agree with your premise. As a lifelong Journey fan, I just didn't think Augeri was a smart choice. To be fair to Neal and CO, perhaps Augeri was the best they could find, at that particular point in time.

Loneman1 wrote: IMO he definitely deserves serious recognition in the history of Journey.

I'm not sure what exactly you mean by this statement. The history of Journey will ALWAYS be wrapped around the Perry years, and anyone who truly believes otherwise, is DELUSIONAL! As many yahoo Journey fans have noted "There was a Journey before Perry", and my response has always been...Yeah, in name only, and nobody noticed! That same group of fans goes on about how "There is a Journey after Perry". In the interest of being consistent, my response has always been...Yeah, in name only, and nobody has noticed. They are definitely getting more attention now, because of the publicity surrounding Arnel's youtube discovery, and the fact that the guy can actually sing. That will never change that the history and legacy of this band was established with Steve Perry, as their lead singer. If Journey were ever inducted into the HOF (And, I doubt it will happen), Augeri has ZERO right to be part of that, regardless of how many years he spent as "Journey's" lead singer! Nothing of any significance was accomplished with Steve Augeri, as their lead singer. He and Deen Castronovo are both good dudes, but hired guns, who have nothing to do with the music that Journey became famous for writing and performing!

Weither you liked him or not. I did, Journey was a turd in a bowl ,till they found Steve A. They toured wuth him for 8 fucking years, some good, some bad. They toured with him and got great reviews, and bad ones.I saw the dude 18 times, altough some of 2005 was lipped, 2002 thru 2004 were great. You can say they just would have gotten someone else,well they didnt. He did a good fucking job.They were supposed to take a break, they didnt, fuck them.They lost a singer and a year worth of touring and $$. Shows you how retarded they are.If they do the same to Arnel I will be in there shit even worse. I like that dude, [not like Friga does }

"Red 13" sucked, and "Generations" was a fucking abortion! That's my opinion, and it is no less valid than any of your opinions, that you pass off as gospel, that everyone should just blindly accept (This is called a run-on sentence, should you feel compelled to pull the red pen out, again)!

There is a difference there, as Arnel has been consistantly singing for years, whereas Augeri came back pretty much cold after being away from singing on a touring/recording off and on basis. Also, in Neal's eyes, Arnel is his golden opportunity. I REALLY would like to think he won't fuck this up, since this is his last shot.

Enigma869 wrote:Agreed, but many of Augeri's over-zealot fans went out of their way to make him sound like he had more talent in his index finger than Perry had in his entire being, which was simply laughable!

I agree, all that went way overboard.

Arnel is doing better and better. I saw him the second night of the US tour and completely floored me, and apparently via reviews he is still improving.

While I still wish I could have seen a Chalfant-lead Journey, Augeri was pretty damn good. I had the misfortune of being born too late to see the Perry-led Journey so I had to make up for that via endless bootlegs. That said, I still liked his performance pretty much every time I saw him, and when it comes down to it, isn't that pretty important? He was a crowd pleaser.

If all you want to base it by is sales and corporate/public recognition, then what you say is true. If you want to base it by sheer songwriting and execution, there were quite a few gems never really given a chance. I am just talking about the music. I put many of their Pre-Perry songs right along with everything else. Were they huge hits? Of course not. Were they good songs? HELL YEA!!! I can do the same for the Augeri era recordings as well. There are quite a few great songs from Arrival/Red 13/Generations altogether. Were they all great? No. I can't justify commercial success with quality. I can't wait to hear what Arnel has to offer songwriting-wise. I believe either Neal or Jon mentioned that he would be a part of the next album.

EDIT: I forgot the part about the possible HOF induction. That whole thing is so convoluted and screwy, but you are right, the best lineup would include Perry as ONE of the singers included, but Gregg Rolie should be right there with him.

They toured with him and got great reviews, and bad ones.I saw the dude 18 times, altough some of 2005 was lipped, 2002 thru 2004 were great. You can say they just would have gotten someone else,well they didnt. He did a good fucking job.They were supposed to take a break, they didnt, fuck them.They lost a singer and a year worth of touring and $$. Shows you how retarded they are.If they do the same to Arnel I will be in there shit even worse. I like that dude, [not like Friga does }
I stand by my post,if they do the same to Arnel I will be a fly in there shit times 10

Listen fuck wad...Just because you happen to have a different opinion about something doesn't mean I don't "know anything", and it certainly doesn't make you the omnipotent one!

I never said I was omnipotent, just stating MY opinion that you don't know what the fuck you're talking about when it comes to Augeri.

Neither is Arnel, but he can at least sing the back catalog with some power and range!

Whats your point? I wouldn't argue that he's Arnel either.

Since 78 wrote: His ability to sing the SP Journey catalog has nothing to do with him being a VERY good singer.

You criticized my TYPO and then put an English sentence together, like this??? I don't even know what this sentence means, so I won't address it any further!

Dude, let me spell it out for you. Just because he couldn't sing the catalog like Perry, doesn't make him an average singer!

Thanks for your opinion. Now here is mine  There is ZERO music in the Augeri catalog that is anywhere near "GREAT"! "Arrival" was VERY good, and Journey did a miserable job, promoting it. Augeri sounded very good on almost every track, and I liked the fact that the dude wasn't forced to strain to get the notes out! The rest of the Augeri catalog SUCKED ASS! "Red 13" sucked, and "Generations" was a fucking abortion! That's my opinion, and it is no less valid than any of your opinions, that you pass off as gospel, that everyone should just blindly accept (This is called a run-on sentence, should you feel compelled to pull the red pen out, again)!

Once again your opinion, which many would disagree with. Unfortunately, most won't for fear of being called a "fuckwad". Just because Red 13 doesn't sound like classic Journey doesn't mean that it sucks. And calling Generations a "fucking abortion" every time you get a chance isn't going to make people stop liking it.

I said what I felt like saying. I would suggest that if you don't like reading my thoughts, that you move on to another post!

And I said what I felt like saying. Was`I not supposed to do that?

Thanks for noticing the typo, Einstein!
