OT - How much to tip take-out delivery drivers

Why would people NOT leave a tip, just because they are in a group? If they are that sort of person, they wouldn't leave one if they were dining alone anyway. Just because there are more then normal in a group doesn't mean I should be told what to tip.

You're not being told. You're leaving at least 15%, which is more than fair. Again, if you don't wanna be served then stay home. Nothing is free in life. Personally, I think 20% should be automatic even if there's just one person unless you have some sort of experience that warrants a manager coming in to investigate the poor service in which case it would be removed from the bill. I've seen hundreds of times where people were offered great service as a group of 4 or so and when the bill came (which was probably 40-60 dollars) they left a dollar. Sometimes nothing.

Dan, stop with the stay home shit. If people didn't expect service from people in businesses, no one would ever go ANYWHERE! If they want a tip they better offer the service or THEY should stay home. If I want to give 10% for less then stellar service, I WILL. One person or 20, EARN IT...but AGAIN, don't automactically TELL me what I have to do because there are a few more people with me.

If it happens regularly~ they should reconsider their job selection...evidently they weren't cut out to deal with the public!!!

The sad part is, that it does happen alot. Ive been in the buisness a long time, and it happens to everybody... Its not fair to sit there and say, I shouldnt have to tip, find a better job if you dont like it. If that was the case you would never be able to go eat anywhere. Who would serve you?? As for parties of 8, resturants battle back and forth with doing that. They do it because people have the audacity to go out with 12 of thier friends, get great, attentive service, run thier bill up to 150 dollars, and then they decide to leave 3 dollars on the table... Trust me it happens. I see it all the time.

I agree... and it isn't like you're having something astronomical tacked onto the end of your bill. It is generally 15, 18, or rarely 20 percent. All of it is a normal etiquette standard amount. If you're there in a party of 8 or whatever and you feel your service was horrible... talk to the manager of the restaurant about it. Otherwise, it seems fair enough.

Not when someone makes below minimum wage, and in most cases like 2 bucks an hour it's not. And guess what, servers are now taxed on the bill. That is, they HAVE to pay a certain percentage of taxes based on their gross bills. So when people are fucking cheap or don't tip at all they're actually paying taxes on money they didn't even make!!! It's mainly because of that law that I think 15-20 percent should be automatic since the server is getting taxed on the presumption that at least that amount is being left!!!

No, it's not. I can't see anyone actually LIKING being paid minimum wage. I would bet a VERY small percentage of people stay a server because they enjoy it. I would bet it's 80% high school/college kids that do it to get by. I hated it...that's why *I* got out of it. There are hundreds of jobs with less stress, less BITCHING about not getting enough of a tip and oh, yeah, more money.

I'm mildly annoyed by the "party of 8 or more automatic tip" thing but my one HUGE pet peeve is places that automactically put the tip on the bill for you! There was a comedy club here in town(that oddly enough just closed down last week) that did that and it drove me crazy. *I* will determine what I'm going to tip, not YOU!

Fuck that, Ang. Some assholes get great service and leave NOTHING!!! Can you imagine busting your ass (and knockers ) for 2 hours or so for a party of fucking 12 and getting NOTHING?!?!

That is absolutely right Dan. When you have big parties of people.......it would almost always happen that you would get screwed. Yeah they would throw down a $20 bill. Which would be a good tip.....but NOT on a $300 check!!! Plus those big parties are very hard work. And they almost always want seperate checks which was a HUGE pain in the ass.

I don't mind them adding the tip to the bill. Usually it is only for 15%-18%. I will usually throw down some extra for a tip if the service was really good.
