I believe Rip, Saint John, Gunbot and Rhiannon are ahead of the Tagalog-learning pack! They may not need this Tagalog 101 course!

This is for the benefit of those of you who lurk into or visit/participate in the “Shout Box” of Arnel’s official website—I found a number of good sites to learn some simple Tagalog words and phrases. I’m sure it would be more fun for you if you could improve your chances of understanding some of the local words being flashed into the SB screen “at the speed of light”!

With this thread, one of my objectives also is to encourage some people from Arnel's official website to participate in! Most likely, most of them are experts on this thread topic.

Does anybody know that the relatively new English word boondocks came from the Tagalog word bundok which means mountain?

It's spelled phonetically. I've just gone nuts with the word Bahgal and now it's an in joke among friends and family...which means filipinos. We call Arnel the bahgaler...It's all in good fun.

"Gilling-Gilling" has always caught my undivided attention. I know I must be spelling it wrong, but that's how it sounds. Peck-peck also. Sarap! Chickaneenee - kissmark/hicky. If a chick gives you a chickaneenee, that means hands off to other girls, but if a chick disregards the kissmark and is with you anyways, she's running the high risk of getting into a catfight from literally hell if the other chick catches her with you. In the Philippines, the men run like hell from a angry Filipina woman cause they are like very adorable but effective little tasmanian devils, when they're pissed off, sort of like the one in the old BB cartoons. Rule of thumb, don't piss off a Filipina or she's liable to show you the end you've never seen before. I've learned that from someone elses big mistake.

As in any culture, there are Filipinas who are aggressive and dominant; and there are those who are very sweet, patient, and tolerant. Some of the positive words and phrases often associated with Filipinas are: loving & caring, family-oriented, lifetime marriage partners, devoted, loyal, graceful, charming, neat, and---most importantly to some---Filipinas are known to be great cooks! Needless to say---I believe that character, behavior and skills of people generally vary---depending on the environment where they have been raised.

No, actually I had always kept my girlfriend very happy, she was as beautiful as an angel and no way did I want to mess that up. However I had a friend once who broke up with his girl in the Philippines. The next day we go to her house to move out his 50 gallon salt water aquarium and a few other things of his. We're walking out the front door with our hands full of stuff to put in the car and fortunately I was walking out the door first and he's behind me. We're no more then three steps out the front door when I heard this loud metalic "BINK", at which point I turned around and see him drop all the stuff he was carrying and crumple to the ground, she had busted him over the head from behind with the blunt end of a steel shovel. At which point she throws down the shovel, goes down to the ground and craddles him while she's crying and telling him how much she loves him. He was knocked out from it for about 5 to 10 seconds is all. That's about as close as I ever came to it. Tess was one hell of a mean chickadee. I saw many a time complete strangers get into worse with their women though.

Yeah your right about that one. That happened about twice that I knew of, and they didn't end like John Wayne Bobbit's ordeal neither. Jobbed it off right at the trunk with a straight edge razor blade. I knew none of those fellows personally, but word got out really fast that they had been very sexually abusive towards the chicks they were and on top of that, didn't pay the ladies for their services rendered. Talk about some serious karma. And never gank a ho in the Philippines cause they always have a way into your room while your fast asleep.
