Hands down, Perry was better in his prime. But Meine is obviously better now.

Klaus Meine is better than Don dokken.

Klaus Meine is not better than Steve Perry! obsurd comment. Perry's range was superior in his era.

Jimmy Jamison's range doesn't even compete to Perry's range. Jamsion sounds like he struggles in those moments where Perry or even a Joe Lyn Turner would ease through...

Well i don't know how you can make a comparison between two singers, one of which who hasn't been seen performing in the last decade, who are of completely different vocal styles...

All a bit ridiculous but for what its worth, regardless of range etc i find Perry the more emotive singer on all albums he's performed on.

He's just simply a better vocalist in all areas. You can compare the two, I don't see why not. One was sublime in his prime, and the other is still very good and steady.

Glad you like the Scorps show, and I've had no less than 3 people in the last week ask me if Dokken was Scorpions because of the similarity in their voices. Many people don't know that Klaus was having vocal problems prior to recording Blackout and they asked Don to temporarily fill in on lead vox in the studio until he was ready to return. Still hoping those tapes surface someday.

Another interesting bit of Blackout trivia, and a semi-Scoprs/RATT connection -- the bass player on that album (uncredited I believe) was Juan Croucier's brother, Tom Croucier.

So how was RATT? Was Corabi still with them for this show?

That was, of course, me.

And when I have time to jack with photoshop, I'm gonna bring out Steve Perry vs. Godzilla, too. Can you imagine? That would be awesome... Steve Perry would SMOKE that lizard bitch with one hand tied behind his back and his eyes closed.

Godzilla would come out of that fight like this --> Image

I think it's a fine thread if I do say so myself.

I don't know Tito, it is a good thread and all, but the girl who wanted Steve Perry vs Godzilla has a point too!

That's not the Godzilla it's the baby Godzillasaurus. Perry under his street fightin' identity 'The Hoarse Whisperer'(tm) would have no trouble taking him out!

All I am saying is all these Steve Perry vs Some other singer you prefer is a bit biased. It makes as much sense to start a thread that goes Steve Perry vs Godzilla, or Godzillasaurus, or Tiny Tim or whatever! Steve is a great singer. Period. I love all these debates...........The people who love Steve will still love Steve. The people who love the other singer will still love the other singer. A bit of a mute point don't you think?.......... Perry still rules.

And you have heard Perry sing today? Hmmmmm, and we thought only Lora and Cyndi and Randy Jackson have had that privilidge. Don't get me wrong I am not knocking Meine. But I see no reason to knock Perry either, because you like Meine.

Thank You :D i feel the very sameway. If you like this guy fine but there is no need to say that about Perry.

I find it odd... or maybe unfair... that on a board dedicated to Journey - a board that wouldn't BE HERE without Perry - Perry gets crapped on more than anyone.

What would have been wrong with posting a thread about Meine and how good he is without even mentioning Perry? Different genres, and as someone said - apples and oranges.

Perry was a great singer, in fact he was regarded by many, myself included as one of the very best of all time so as you say the point is moot. Oh, you wrote mute...perhaps that might be more relevant when referring to SP these days!

Oh and leave Tiny Tim out of it the poor kid was a cripple... actually on second thoughts...

One never knows...........Steve might just suprise us one day. I have no problem with Tiny Tim. As long as I don't have to hear him sing!  Too shrill for my taste. I am sure he has fans as well. I am sorry I spelled moot wrong. I don't always check my spelling. Thanks for setting me straight---------on the spelling!

A high voice does not a good singer make. Its the quality of the voice (often called "ring" or "ping") that matters to the ear, not where the voice sits. A high voice is just a high voice, not better or worse than the next voice. There are bass singers who have far superior voices to any tenor and vice versa. In fact, the top singer today is a Siberian born Baritone. He sells out concerts all over the world months in advance. Also, many singers you think are singing "high" are not. In many cases these singers have the sought after ringing quality that makes it pleasing to the ear.

Jamison has an excellent voice. In fact, he probably has one of the best pure singing voices in pop music, although he may have abused it a bit. JLT also has excellent pipes because he has talent and he knonws how to sing. JLT can still sing, which indicates he normally sings within his natural range.

Why people lose their voices

Postby RockitRide » Wed Aug 13, 2008 5:04 am

If Perry has lost his voice, he lost it because he sang too often out of his range, assuming he doesn't have a medical condition. Men should be able to sing into their 70's and even 80's in some cases (Pavorotti's father for example), provided they do not abuse their voice. On the other hand, women's voices can change at menopause. In fact many sopranos have to become altos after menopause. Guys like JLT and a few others who do not try to color their voice with fake overtones (rasp), or excessive screaming will be singing well into their 60's if they sing in their given range. Singing from the throat is also a death sentence and that is why a lot of singers lose their voice during a concert. The best rock singers use the same basic techniques as classical singers, it is just the delivery that makes it sound a bit different. Some great male countiry singers are former opera singers. If these guys are smart they will never lose their voice.

There are witnesses who say he has not lost his voice. He might not be able to hit the ceiling with the notes, but I think people confuse range with quality. He has always had a voice with pure presence. That is why so many still consider him one of the top vocalist of our time.

They're are witness who say we are being visited by flying saucers, that bigfoot roams the Pacific Northwest and that there is a pehistoric sea serpent in the lochs of Scotland. Perry's PRESENT voice will remain an x-file until verifiable proof is presented. Until then, the pummeling shall continue unabated.
