Fucking Triumph!!!

Postby G.I.Jim » Wed Aug 13, 2008 9:22 am

Damn you Triumph! Somehow in my 36 year existence I've never really heard Triumph. After hearing them tonight (on Youtube of course) I'm going to be broke as hell after buying all of their albums!!!  I've heard the name a hundred times, but didn't really know any of their songs. After checking them out on Youtube, I now realize that they have a lot of kick-ass tunes.... I MUST hear their entire library now! :x

Are any of you fans? If so, tell me what your favorite album is. Normally when I stumble on a band like this, I make it a point to buy the whole list of their albums. I haven't done any digging on the band yet, so I don't even know how many albums they have. I'm just excited because I found a "New" band to check out. I hope their stuff is as good as what I'm lead to believe...

I look forward to any insight of the band from any of you fans in here! How long were they together? Are they still doing anything? If not, who was the asshole in the band? Can't wait to dig deeper...

 ...You can always count on Maui Tom for some good one-liners.

Seriously, though...The only Triumph albums I own are "Never Surrender" and "Thunder Seven", both pretty good albums.

Yep great band, Jim! I'd get Allied Forces first too. Magic Power is definitely my favorite. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=os5wH_H7cng

Seen them a few times back in the day.......fabulous live shows. They were inducted into the Canadian Hall of Fame at the Juno's here earlier this year......great to see! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_0LY8kRDB4

If you like live recordings, try and find Triumph's "Stages" CD. Its basically their greatest hits in the live format.

Allied Forces is a great album as mentioned above. Thunder Seven is also a fave of mine. Honorable mention to the Sport of Kings album also.

I will second that!!! Saw Rik Emmett a few years ago solo. He is still awesome live!!!

Magic Power is my favorite too Deb :D It is just one of those anthem type songs.

Man, how could've missed Truimph? They're one of the best 3 piece Rock Band. They have a lot great songs like Allied Forces, Lay It On The Line, Figth The Good Fight, etc. Now, don't miss on Dream Theater dude.

If you want commercial, go for Sport of Kings, or Edge of Excess. If you want their heydey stuff, go for Never Surrender, or Thunder Seven. Skip Surveillence.

But if you get onlt one....it MUST be ALLIED FORCES!!!!!!!

I don't know that I have favorite albums, but my favorite songs are "Never Surrender" and "Fight The Good Fight". Powerful powerful band. I can't believe you've never heard them, Jim, but I"m glad you're on board now!

Try to rent "Live at Halifax" or Triumph at the US Festival. Then you can watch Rik Emmett tear it up.

Here's hoping that Rik Emmit and the gang were able to keep their differences patched up in recent days. I'm wondering how their latest reunion is going. I hope they're able to keep going for a while because I would like to see them release something together again much like Asia did (something I'd never thought I'd see happen with the original 4 like that)

Great band!

Postby Lerxst101 » Wed Aug 13, 2008 11:06 pm

Jim, glad you found them. I've been a fan for over 25 years. Soon after I first discovered Rush, it was suggested that I listen to Triumph as well. Allied Forces still is my favorite, but so many good CDs.

Pathetic, though. I still remember becoming excited when I saw a new (at the time) Triumph CD in the store. Can't tell you how bummed and confused I was when I put it in the CD player to only then realize Rik had left the band. Never played the CD again. It was awful without him.

Allied Forces, then Never Surrender.

I own the US Festival DVD, but there's another one called "A night of Triumph" that I'd like to check out. They had a great stage show back in the day. Pyro out the wazoo.

The US Festival performance is a daytime show, so you don't get all of that.

Great band!

" A night of triumph" is the one filmed in Halifax. Great 5.1 DTS mix done on the disc. They use a 4th guy for keyboards and rhythm guitar. Stellar performance, big 80's hair and all.

Thanks. I'm going to have a look for that one, I don't have any 'live' Triumph. :)

I'd start with Just a Game and then move on to the others. Production didn't seem the best on this album, but it's still my favorite. They were unbelievable in concert. I wish they'd do a full tour.

If you find out who the asshole is, it might ruin it for you...just like the overinformation on Journey. Once you bore down to the personalities, you're screwed as a fan of the music. I'd just enjoy the music. But hey, that's just me.

Hey Mike...I've seen some of your other "top album or artist" listings on other threads and we have unbelievably close tastes. Two of us out there is pretty scary shit.

Hold On remains as one of my all-time favorite songs...and...then...Me and Johnnie Walker, and the comfort that he brings... Rock on.

I want to say they were around from, like, 1978 until around 1987. Rik Emmett left in the late 80's, and there was some bad blood between the other two guys and Rik for years. They recently did a reunion show, though, and there's talk of a world tour in 2009. You may get your chance to see them yet!

This is how I would rank them:
1. Never Surrender
2. Surveillance
3. Thunder Seven

Then get the rest of the albums.
Sport of kings has a couple of good songs, but doesn´t really sound like Triumph to my ears.
