I do believe they are 16. it is probably because of their petite, lean bodies and baby-face features. and besides, just because they don't have obvious bosoms, makes them 12 years old.

on the otherhand, the child labor practice and china's secretive dealings and witholding real birth records does create some form of suspicion.

I think the girl who could sing is a beautiful child. She should have been able to sing, and see the reaction of the crowds. Oh and whoever is making tasteless chinese jokes, please don't.

that gymnast probably fell on her face during her practice routines. it's not uncommon in gymnastics. and how do they know that it was only a temporary tooth and not a permanent one? I think it is also unfair that we judge them by their looks alone. heck, most of us if not all were even surprised to learn and could not believe that Arnel is already 40.

anyway, how can we guarantee that their mature looking opponents are really 16 and not underage? seems pretty biased by virtue of looks. that's unfair just the same.

The voice isn't coming from the actual puppet, no one's complaining about that so who cares. None of us went go out and purchased an album like in the Milli-Vanilli case.

TSH,
I respect your opinion. However, if I were the parent of that little girl (the real singer), I would really be pissed off big time! The principle is not right. It's just unfair, to say the least.

Yeah, that would piss of the parents I'm sure, unless they are team players right?

I may be wrong...but unlike in established democratic countries, I think in China, whatever the high government officials say...is still treated like a "law", and followed by citizens--whether they like it or not.

On the other hand, I would agree with you that it's also possible that the parents of the real singer were just excited about the opportunity of their daughter to be involved in the greatest event in modern Chinese history. Plus, they probably received reasonable compensation. Who knows? :D

From the coaches who have done this for years noting the lack of maturity of these girls. It isn't because they are small, they can tell physical signs of them being underage. Look I don't fault the girls in any way. I am just saying there needs to be a better way to insure age levels than because the government say they are a certain age. My only fear is if these girls are underage, it will cause them serious growing problems in the future. If they are underage, it sets them at an unfair advantage as well. It's not like they would fake a girl singing for anouther one........ooops already done that!

Does anyone else think, according to China's human rights record, that we should even be at the Olympics there in the first place?

Do you mean we as in the US or we as in the World. I really don't think it's honor China deserves. I mean, why not have the olympics in freaking Iran if those are the standards.

I did and for more than a few weeks. My opinion, and it is MY opinion is therefore informed by my own experience.

I'm not saying China is perfect, far from it but it is way too easy to dismiss and criticize from the other side of the fence based purely on what information you are fed. Before taking too harsh a stance perhaps we should ask ourselves how our own countries are perceived by outsiders. Stupid is as stupid does.

It's not a matter of perception. The rest of the world damn well knows that we don't persecute innocent people like China, Iran, North Korea, etc. That has nothing to do with perception. The world ALWAYS hates the top dog. Are we perfect? Obviously not but there is a major difference between the relatively minor issues that we have here and the major ones faced by countries where imprisonment or even death can be the result of trying to live free.

It was widely reported that they filmed the fire works the night before due to concerns over smog and had some of that footage, which they had time to enhance through video editing (not with photoshop) was fed in due to visibility issues and for the sake of continuity. I was quite surprised when I read about it but I guess they weren't taking any chances with an event of this magnitude.

I hate to think how many complaints are going to be forthcoming after what is certain to be a complete washout in London 2012.

Its never that black and white. Sadly persecution of the innocent doesn't know boarders and can happen anywhere. To say that the US or UK has not engaged in such activity is a very blinkered view but I really shouldn't get into any kind of political battle as I am far too shallow and would quickly be exposed as a charlatan!

I just call it as I see it and I had a very pleasant experience abroad which I would love to repeat on a more permanent basis.

Just ask "the world" who hates us where they'd rather live out the rest of their days. China or the United States. It just floors me when people try to say our government and our country is even WORSE than a hell hole like China just because they hate the president so much. It's just stupid.

I know what you mean and concern about this matter. but it seems like the host country is getting the ire. the argument here is are we sure that the other participating nations follow this rule of 16?

I do agree that such rule must be followed, but it must include everyone.

I agree whole heartedly. What is good for one, is good for all. I don't think I care about who is the host country. I have no ills on that note. Just the concern over ANY country that would break the rules to win, at the cost of the health of the children involved. No country should be exempt. Pride of nation is no excuse to do harm to a child.
