It's not a matter of perception. The rest of the world damn well knows that we don't persecute innocent people like China, Iran, North Korea, etc. That has nothing to do with perception. The world ALWAYS hates the top dog. Are we perfect? Obviously not but there is a major difference between the relatively minor issues that we have here and the major ones faced by countries where imprisonment or even death can be the result of trying to live free.

Just ask "the world" who hates us where they'd rather live out the rest of their days. China or the United States. It just floors me when people try to say our government and our country is even WORSE than a hell hole like China just because they hate the president so much. It's just stupid.

China is hardly a hell hole. And for the record I love bush!

It is for many.

You should visit Stonehouse in Plymouth, England then! Its like a mini Beirut, seriously!

Do they tell you that you can only have one child in your life and force abortion and sterilization on you there?

Actually its quite the opposite. Given that it's a breeding ground for criminal scum and filth the city would be a far better place if those rules did apply...for real.

I do agree that such rule must be followed, but it must include everyone.

---------------------
I agree whole heartedly. What is good for one, is good for all. I don't think I care about who is the host country. I have no ills on that note. Just the concern over ANY country that would break the rules to win, at the cost of the health of the children involved. No country should be exempt. Pride of nation is no excuse to do harm to a child.

Is there any actual evidence to suggest the athletes are under age or is it all just hearsay at this point?

Both are very beautiful little girls but from an aesthetic point of view I believe the right choice was made - however I would have had the girl who presented the song have her own voice heard. Doesn't matter that she apparently wasn't as good vocally, she's a child not Mariah Carey.

I barely understood a word that you wrote -were you comparing a child with the sexually promiscuous and dominant Jolie? The opening ceremony was the work of renowned movie director Yimou Zhang and was all about projecting an image. The girl in the red dress simply looked better. We should have heard her sing though, that's the only issue I have with it.

Also read another article that the fireworks that we saw on tv for the opening ceremony were fake:

"Well, turns out, many of the fireworks seen on television were digitally created because, according to officials, the smog was too bad for anyone to see the real ones anyway." - LA Times

You see their point? I don't. Who on earth judges a young child like that? She has a beautiful voice and they should have let her sing and be shown. She's a little kid. Is the world really going to sit there and go "ooh, gross that's a homely kid?"

The whole opening show was a beauty contest! Every single thing done was extreme. Do you really think that any country would have some joe out there with a white board drawing stick figures while your freckly cousin sings?

Why do magazine spreads get retouched/airbrushed?
Why do music records get mixed & polished?
Why do people wear makeup?

China was putting on a world-wide show, not some hippie hug fest.
Would anyone care if they'd have originally found the cutest girl with the best voice?

And btw, aren't we discriminating against all of us average wannabe jocks? Why do we have to send the best to the Olympics? If the ugly girl gets to sing, then damnit I should get to throw the discus! (hint: no one wants to see average)

It was her voice. It should have been her moment. Are you saying the show would have been a bust if they had let an unattractive SEVEN YEAR old belt out her own song?

Perhaps she didn't want to.

It would have been a letdown for her especially if she couldn't present the song effectively. Has anyone ever thought that perhaps she was unable to perform effectively in front of such a massive crowd. There was a suggestion of this in a news report that stated that the girl who did perform was not given confirmation until 15 minutes before by which time the tapes were cued I guess.

...and the original singer isn't unattractive.

Except that the person who made the decision to replace her specifically says:

"The main consideration was the national interest," he said. "The child on the screen should be flawless in image, in her internal feelings, and in her expression. In the matter of her voice, Yang Peiyi was flawless, in the unanimous opinion of all the members of the team."
That was until attention turned to Yang Peiyi's teeth. Nevertheless, Mr Chen thought the end result a perfect compromise.
"We used her to sing in all the rehearsals," Mr Chen said. "But in the end the director thought her image was not the most appropriate, because she was a little too old. Regrettably, we had to let her go."

Blimey there is more spin in there than even Schon could manage! Which one was it...teeth, age, internal feelings, expression? What is sucky is that they couldn't have made the decision before, talk about last minute.

Wait a min. If it was her voice, then it was her moment. Why does she need to be seen to have a moment?

I think that because of this situation, she's probably getting more PR than ever. The pretty girl is probably at home crying right now, because her voice isn't good enough.

And yes, the production as it was, was a bust. That's exactly why the powers that be stopped and said, "hey we've got someone cuter than that." They were just polishing the show. It was a win-win. They got a prettier girl AND a prettier voice. If anything the pretty girl was discriminated against because she wasn't allowed to sing.

some of you guys should be ashamed of yourselves. trying to gang up on the lil girl that was on tv, just because the other one seemed didn't get some credit. for starter's they have their own personal moments. one girl's voice was heard and one girl's face was seen. both should be proud and happy. besides, after the olympics, they would be back to their ordinary chinese lives. there is no real politics here, just some people who want to make this an issue.

Despite opening up their society a little bit, China still utilizes Reeducation Camps.

Okay, one bonafied chinese guy in a reeducation camp ( and he's a table tennis player to boot )

One week of "rural re-education" in a Chinese camp, an undisclosed fine and a temporary suspension from the national team... and a public apology of course is what Chinese table-tennis star Chen Qi got just for kicking a chair after losing the Japan Open final in March (he did not attack the other player):

I beg to differ with you. Not everyone is hung up on looks, and the girl who sang was very cute. I have no hang up with either girl. They are pawns in a socialist game. Put yourself in the little girls shoes 20 years from now. I sang at the Olympics in 2008! No one beleives her because the pretty girl was the one on stage. Or even if it is found out, she has to live with the knowledge that she was just not pretty enough. That is scarring. If you have a daughter who could sing like a bird, would you let them push her behind a curtain and tell her she just doesn't cut it in the look department?
