This whole story is just ridiculous :? Way to celebrate the supposed Olympic spirit, isn't it something about letting all people no matter their appearance, creed or nationality get a shot at glory...?

It's bad enought what China did, it's even worse that the IOC has defended it.

You go G~Boy!!!

Its hardly Guantanamo Bay is it now?

Lets get a few facts straight here. This was over two years ago and here's the actual article from the source of your picture, China Daily. Although unfortunately a nasty trait of society its not fair that anyone should form an opinion without being properly informed. Especially when that view is then targeted at another Countries customs and belief system.

I am not going to get in a political debate here but really folks people in glass houses should not be throwing stones. To make matters worse our figurative glass walls are single glazed and already cracking. Maybe we should concentrate on fixing them first?

Olympic champ paid the price for losing cool
(China Daily)
Updated: 2006-05-20 06:31

Chinese Olympic table tennis champion Chen Qi says he feels like a "new person" after completing the last set of punishments for losing his temper in an international competition.

The 21-year-old had already made an open apology, was drilled in a military boot camp and handed out an undisclosed amount of fines for his televised tantrum two months ago. He said he soon repented after he flung the ball on the ground and kicked a chair into the air as he lost the Asian Cup final to team-mate Wang Hao in Japan on March 5.

The chain of punishments was suspended as Chen Qi helped the Chinese team defend the world team championship in Bremen, Germany, early this May and team discipline was resumed once he returned.

Chen, 2004 Olympic doubles gold medallist, was sent to do farm work in Pantao village in the northern Hebei Province. After a week of hard labour, Chen said he is now a changed man.

"I am truly sorry for my actions," Chen said on Tuesday. "I should never disgrace the Chinese table tennis team. Working in the fields is a good re-education process for me."

Yet Chen, a prospect groomed for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, is still smart from his Asian Cup loss. "It was the second straight final I lost in a month. That was really frustrating. I was so angry and disappointed at my play that I lost my cool."

On Monday, Chen was seen weeding in a wheat field. He was clumsy with the hoe and wiped forehead sweat with the sleeve of his national team jersey. A throng of curious local farmers and several reporters watched the table tennis star do the work he had never done before.

"On the first day, Chen wasn't able to do anything," said Pantao village chief Wang Haijiang. "But he is very clever and a quick learner.

"Chen had plucked cucumbers, weeded and irrigated the fields, fed pigs and levelled the dirt."

Chen declined autograph requests from locals, saying he was a farmer not a sports star.

Table tennis is the most watched sport in China, and it has won far more Olympic and world titles than any other sport. Therefore, the Chinese national table tennis team is expected to meet the highest standards of personal behaviour.

Chen's team-mate Qiu Yike was banned for a year from the national team for his late-night drinking in February.

In 2004, four national team members were thrown out for dating team-mates and were accused of impeding preparations for the Athens Olympic Games.

"The Chinese table tennis team is the most disciplined team in the world, that's why it has become so strong," said Yang Ying, an athlete-turned-table tennis TV commentator, who had been once suspended from the national team for reporting two hours late after returning from holidays.

Chen Qi won't be the last table tennis player to work in the countryside. Other players will be sent, too, yet for a different reason.

Liu Guoliang, the Chinese men's team head coach, said he is considering sending the whole team for "education."

You see their point? I don't. Who on earth judges a young child like that? She has a beautiful voice and they should have let her sing and be shown. She's a little kid. Is the world really going to sit there and go "ooh, gross that's a homely kid?"

The whole opening show was a beauty contest! Every single thing done was extreme. Do you really think that any country would have some joe out there with a white board drawing stick figures while your freckly cousin sings?

Why do magazine spreads get retouched/airbrushed?
Why do music records get mixed & polished?
Why do people wear makeup?

China was putting on a world-wide show, not some hippie hug fest.
Would anyone care if they'd have originally found the cutest girl with the best voice?

And btw, aren't we discriminating against all of us average wannabe jocks? Why do we have to send the best to the Olympics? If the ugly girl gets to sing, then damnit I should get to throw the discus! (hint: no one wants to see average)

later~

I beg to differ with you. Not everyone is hung up on looks, and the girl who sang was very cute. I have no hang up with either girl. They are pawns in a socialist game. Put yourself in the little girls shoes 20 years from now. I sang at the Olympics in 2008! No one beleives her because the pretty girl was the one on stage. Or even if it is found out, she has to live with the knowledge that she was just not pretty enough. That is scarring. If you have a daughter who could sing like a bird, would you let them push her behind a curtain and tell her she just doesn't cut it in the look department?

You contradict yourself. You say you're not hung up on looks, but that's exactly what you're complaining about. If they made the decision to go with another girl of less beauty, you'd all still be questioning it because the real singer was prettier. You guys just want to complain. Geez. (Either that or you've got personal issues from a similiar situation.)

If my daughter could sing like that I've be overjoyed in knowing that she has a beautiful voice. Pretty faces are a dime a dozen, but pretty voices are real talent. And no, she wouldn't grow up scarred. She'd be a very strong person and proud of her voice. How can you say how someone else will grow up? Quite a generalization I'd say. 20 yrs from now, these two girls will look completely different. But I bet one will still have a great voice. Easy to see who the real winner will be.

Btw, this wasn't a socialist game. It's the entertainment industry. Things like this happen every day in America. They spent millions on opening night and they thought they could enhance the production a bit. They basically made an international sales decision. They chose to change a face in a collage of many. That's their business and I understand exactly why they did it. Right or wrong, what they said makes sense.

Anybody wanna bet that the real singer gets invited to America to sing on some tv show? Maybe by Matt Lauer himself. We'll see.

Hundreds of thousands of residents have been evicted and their homes demolished in the course of Bejiing's Olympic makeover. These evictions rarely respected due process or the requirements under Chinese law for consultation or compensation. In some cases, residents were violently evicted by thugs and wrecking crews hired by the construction companies clearing sites for new buildings (for background, see Human Rights Watch's report, "Demolished: Forced Evictions and the Tenants' Rights Movement in China."

It's far from nice but in the last 10 years have you even given a thought to this matter or does it simply now afford you a bit of bravado and flag waving to score points on a message board?

Whilst not pleasant at least those who lost their homes to Olympic ambition were resettled.

Well I guess we just differ in oppinions. I wouldn't allow it for my daughter. She does sing like a bird. She has a beautiful voice and she is pretty. Maybe not by the "industry" standards. The little girl who sang was not ugly. There would have been no shame to go with letting her sing her song. How would you like someone else to get credit for your work? It might not bug you, but it would me. I don't know how she will grow up, but I have seen girls who grew up being told they weren't pretty enough for this or that. I guess only beautiful people have a right to be seen in some people's eyes. I find beauty in what most people find average. They usually have more inward beauty than all the "narcissistic beauty queens" that get attention. I guess it boils down to a way of looking at things. I respect your feelings on it though.

It is one of those things. I know what you are saying. Kind of why it pisses me off that a guy can wipe crap on a board and call it art-no lie- makes millions of bucks because he looks a part and tells a BS story. Then there are folks like me, just trying to get their work out. I spend over 50 hours per drawing, and this shmuck gets the limelight. Just isn't right.
