I know it's all for fun and hypothetical, but where did the original question even come from? Can Phil Collins sing a Journey song? WTF?

That's like saying, "Man, that Stevie Ray Vaughan is a hell of a guitarist. I wonder if he can play an Yngwie Malmsteen solo?"

My point being, it's almost two completely different ways of approaching the instrument.

"Man, I love that ABBA song. I wonder how they'd do on a Slayer track?"

Love Phil Collins...He has a very destinctive voice. Could he pull off a Journey song? Probably, but it would be very different from a Journey sound. No one can sing Perry, but Perry. But I would be very open to hear Phil sing Journey. Perry and Collins together would be great. I'm oddly attracted to Collins. There is just something about him. And Steve is just HOT! sorry, just had to add that! lol

Exactly! It's kind of like saying "Let's make our famous apple pie, but instead of apples, let's use pumpkin." Two different items completely.

Phil did a cover of Elton John's "Burn Down the Mission" which I thought was fantastic. But it sounds like Phil Collins singing an Elton John song.

The original question was: "could Phil Collins pull off a journey tune?"
I’d love to hear him sing one of the ballads (because he sings with a lot of emotion), and be able to tell whether it sounds great or not.

but as Red13JoePa has posted, mr phil collins may be through singing.
so i wouldnt be able to know. :(

Wow.....I haven't listened to No Son Of Mine since the time I was going to the Philippines in 94'. Used to love that song very much. I've always liked Collins starting from when the "Against All Odds" single was released. My highschool sweetheart and I were on the verge of breaking up and that song had came on the radio, where just by coincidence we were both listening to the same radio station at the same moment but away from one another. When the song ended, I called her and she told me she was about to call me. At which point we both mentioned the song that we just had heard on the radio reminded us both of one another. From that point on, I really like Collins work because he comes up with really super melodies.

Funny but once a band I tried out for in America back in around 96' didn't let me join because during our initial meeting, they had asked me what I thought of Genesis and I told them that I preferred Collins solo work outside of Genesis, I didn't know it at the time but they were die hard Genesis fans and they viewed Collins as sort of a blacksheep of the band, since he had gone off to do a solo career I'm guessing. They weren't too happy about my opinion that was for sure.

Any questions about the brilliance of post-Gabriel Genesis can be answered in five words:

A TRICK OF THE TAIL.

One of the best records of all time. "Ripples," "Mad Man Moon," "Squonk"...unbelievable stuff.
But around town, it was well known...when they got home at night
Their fat and psychopathic wives
Would thrash them within inches of their lives!

Any one like Mike and the Mechanics? Their stuff was little more activist type than Phil's solo work but I liked it. Paul Carrock and Paul Young were both very good vocalists.

I know TWO songs, 'All I need is a Miracle', and 'Living Years'....

I know Carrack more from his stint in Squeeze.....another underrated group.

I like both of those tunes, and really dug Mike and The Mechanics! I own 3 or 4 of their albums, and tried to write in their style of writing several years ago. I never did anything with those tunes, but may take one out and polish it up with a make-over pretty soon. It's a mix of Mechanics and Collins. I really loved "Living Years", and it really hit home to me when it came out. What an awesome song!

ABSOFUCKINLUTELY.

Hearing Genesis play "Ripples" and "Los Endos" (the latter in a driving rain) live at the Hollywood Bowl last October was one of the greatest moments out of the over 2,000 concerts I've seen in the last 34 years...hands down.

Yeah, I had their album. About two songs on it that I really digged. I compiled a bunch of my favorites on a single cassette which I would always play in my Sony Walkman while I walked the streets of Tokyo at a time when I was just barely old enough to be on my own. My favorites from that album that were included on my favorites cassette were: "Par Avion" and "Call to Arms" which both songs went well nicely for the audio as I watched Japan all around me. Just seemed that these songs (and others) fit everything I was looking at around me in Japan nicely.

Mike +The Mechanics? I love them... Paul Young (one of their vocalists) rocked! What a loss... :(

Here is a little of his (and theirs) brilliance:
