Looked like the other guy touched the wall first. Guess not. Is there a sensor that responds to pressure or something? I swear the other guy touched first. (Maybe not hard enough?)

No, he came up a fingertip short on the reach and then had to push again while Phelps touched it all in one motion JUST BARELY ahead of the other guy.

On slo mo, the guy was gliding where MP stroked/dove to the wall. 50.58 to 50.59.

There is a sensor which is activated upon their touch that is precise to the millisecond. The other guy glided but his momentum failed him a centimeter away from the pad. Phelps actually did a half stroke and slammed his hand into the wall, luckily not injuring himself.

That was amazing! I just watched it on t.v. He matches Mark Spitz in 7 gold medals in a single Olympics...most medals of all athletes EVER!! And, he is quite humble, too. Wowee!

There's a guy at work named Doug Phelps, who is now all of a sudden his uncle.

Get the fuck outta here!!!!
I like to sit out on the front porch, where the birds can see me, eating a plate of scrambled eggs, just so they know what I'm capable of.

by human naked eye, it looked like Phelps lost since his arms was still in motion of stroking, while his opponent was closely reaching towards the wall. the difference in those sequence is that gliding underwater costs him fractions of precious second due to water resistance while Phelps hands were free of any resistance above. it's not even a win by a nose but rather win by a thickness of a fingernail. truly close.

by the way, that Bernard dude certainly got what he deserves.

LOL his 'fingertip win' reminded me of Seinfeld's routine about silver medals in the Olympics:
