I'm not saying anything bad about Arnel. GOOD FOR HIM. (and I believe I've said that from the very beginning) All I'm saying is Jeremey was the better choice. Whether people on here like it or not.

Depends on what your criteria is...

If you are looking to see simply who is the closest to Perry as far as covering the old material.....maybe Jeremey has the edge. If you are trying to move forward as a band and not simply trying to become a tribute to yourself, I would value the point, but there are definitely other factors. In other words...you can't hire someone who can't cover the material (especially on a band like Journey which was vocally-driven), but once you get to a certain point, it doesn't matter. Both Jeremey and Arnel are better at covering Perry than Augeri was, and I don't think Augeri hurt concert attendance as far as not being able to sing the catalogue. So, both Jeremey AND Arnel have passed the go/no-go point unless you are trying for the absolute best. To me, it's a non-issue that would be at the low end of the criteria ranking. Important? Sure, but there are a LOT of things that would be more important--chemistry, writing, showmanship, marketability, etc.
On a side note, I seriously doubt Jeremey would have fared any better on Arnel on the re-recording of the Greatest Hits. You are making a singer stand up to a point that for many people is unreachable, made only further away if you are intentionally trying to re-record the hits to a point that for the purposes of advertising that someone couldn't tell the difference. ANYBODY in that position, including Perry circa 2008, would be crucified.

If you are looking to see who is the better fit for the band....unknown. I figure 2 albums with a singer before you can really tell whether the band gells or not. The band would know this, we don't.

If you are looking to who is going to give you more publicity....I think it's safe to say Arnel has a definite edge here. He brings a new demographic (Filipinos) to the concert and gives Journey a VERY good possibility in doing well in Asia. From a financial standpoint, this is a BIG deal--and I doubt the management didn't see this one. If you have 2 options that are close and each has their own strengths/weaknesses, but one gives a much higher chance of publicity (and therefore $$$), the decision is a no-brainer.

So back to the question...there is no "better" choice unless you know the band's criteria for hiring a singer. Pick different criteria and ranking, and either of them could be better.

If you're going to talk about "Moving forward" Than JSS was the perfect fit. He WANTED to work with these guys, and I'll bet, that if he had...they'd be skyrocketing by now. And I'm not talking about a Wal-Mart exclusive.
They moved Backward with Arnel.

New lead vocalist Arnel Pineda helps return Journey to the AC top 10 for the first time in almost 12 years, as the aptly titled “After All These Years” (Nomota) rises 12-10. The band last resided in the top 10 with its sole AC No. 1, “When You Love a Woman,” which led for three weeks in December 1996. I'm proud to have been involved in both of those!

Just my opinion, but I would say this is moving forward.

You are out of your fucking tree. He's phenomenal. Just go see a show. Just one, that's all I ask. You'll be amazed. Dispel all the crap about diction. That's a non issue. Augeri had a worse accent. Arnel tears it up dude.

Believe me, I wanted to see Jeff go all the way with Journey, but that didn't happen for whatever reason. I was excited about Jeremey, but again, for whatever reason that didn't happen either. They chose Arnel, and now that it's all said and done, they chose the right guy. He fucking rocks.

Oh, and Go Cowboys! :D  You can steal the sig pic from me if you want. I stole it from Michigan Girl.

That's debateable at best. Fair or not, Arnel is more marketable and is selling more tickets than JSS did. He's bringing an entirely new demographic that never cared to see Journey before to the concerts...and they will be playing the Phillipines in what sounds like early next year BECAUSE OF HIM. That's a lot of $$$ that neither Augeri nor JSS were providing. That ain't bad for somebody who was a total nobody as far as the US music scene goes.

Doesn't mean JSS isn't extremely talented. Doesn't mean that he doesn't have great stage presence. Doesn't mean that he shouldn't be a household name. Doesn't mean that he didn't do well for his tour....but I'll stand by the thought that if you add the number of people together that came out last year to see JSS (of which I'll happily admit I was one) vs the number of people that are coming out this year to see Arnel, the new guy wins by a landslide. My guess is a lot of them, never saw Journey before either. Maybe Journey has always had a strong Filipino following, but I've never noticed it until now. At a show though, the presence is felt. Arnel singing is making the band more money than with JSS, Augeri, or anybody else not named Perry performing lead vocals.

Doesn't necessarily mean the band is better off (you might be able to argue that both ways as JSS is a proven songwriter, where Arnel is untested in that area), or that a JSS-led cd wouldn't have done well under the WalMart deal...but from a financial perspective, Arnel was by far the better option.

Vocals: Rock
Drums: Rock (better tempo control as well, nice!!)
Guitar: Rock
Bass: Good

Keyboards....are a total mess on After The Fall and Girl Can't Help It. Seriously, wtf is with "rhodes sound" on After The Fall? Listen to the studio and live versions, it's a synth track and very simple and basic. On Girl Can't Help it, where's the nice synth lead right before the ending chorus section?

If you're going to tribute the band, your "Cain" needs to man up and play the material correctly. Sounds like he's just wiffing and playing be ear and just laying down backing chords. :(

Thanks Jeremey.....loved all the links! BUT....I must say, as good as they are.....you and Frontiers are AWSOME in person!!!

Even my hubby could not stop making comments after we saw you guys at the 8/9 Chattanooga, TN. show. He was totally impressed and said he can't wait to see Y'all again in September at Andrews Upstairs in Atlanta....so we will be seeing you there too!!

My hubby kept saying..."He (Jeremey) even has some of the same facial expressions as Steve when he sings some of the songs.....WOW, he hit that note to perfection"...ect. I was impressed with hubby...I had no idea he ever paid that much attention to Steve sinigng let alone his face!!!!! All that - since 1977 - Steve osmosis must has sunk in after all :D :D

You had me in tears for "Faithfully" and I was jumpin up and down when you added the "Cupid" bit in!!! I think the chick standing in the middle right in front of the stage that had the "HICKING SKIRT" syndrome goin on was to blitzed to even catch it...but I did! AWSOME....AWSOME.....AWSOME!!!!!

And don't take all the vering off topic and 'colorful comments' you read to heart. Keep in mind A.D.D. seems to be rampant on MR regarding nearly every topic that gets posted. Go ahead y'all...hit me with your best shot...I know you're gonna. But I'll just assume you are off your meds...... and I forgive you in advance Image

For those interested here are a few pix of the Chatt show:

Notice the chick in the green top (bottom pic L) ......her skirt was not happy unless it was hiked up to her waist
The Bass player in the bottom R pic was checking her out...notice the grin
