Daughtry covers Foreigner hit for segment

Maybe it's your first time. Maybe it isn't.

Either way, CNN is counting on a specially recorded cover of Foreigner's 1977 hit "Feels Like the First Time" to attract new or returning voters who want to find out what's going on in the presidential campaign.

The tune, cut by the Grammy-nommed band Daughtry, will be the theme song for an occasional segment called "League of First Time Voters." It bows tonight during the cabler's "Campbell Brown: Election Center."

"It's about engaging people to the process who may be voting for the first time," said Andy Mitchell, veep of interactive marketing for CNN Worldwide. "But it's also about people who may be re-engaging with the process after a long while for whatever reason, and that's why we chose the tune -- it may not be their first time voting, but it might feel like it."

According to an announcement by the cabler, "League" is "a multiplatform programming initiative designed to inform, involve and empower individuals passionate about this election cycle. The initiative's online home, located at CNN.com/league, enables users to educate themselves about the candidates, key issues and the election process in general, as well as register to vote using Rock the Vote's innovative, easy-to-use tool for online voter registration."

CNN also put together a musicvideo for the song, which can be seen on the website.

"Daughtry's version of the song is very cool and has more than captured the essence of the original," the song's author, Mick Jones of Foreigner, said in a statement. "I am delighted that the song will be used in this critical initiative."

It's being released on the Deluxe Package of Daughtry's debut CD. How lame is that to release another version of his debut after the first year?!?! Frickin' Record Labels!! With the Deluxe addition you apparantly get some live tracks and some DVD video content along with this one new song. Couldn't they have just released a special edition EP??

Wow! A totally smokin' version of that song! Very nice. I'll buy that song as an mp3 download when it's available, but I won't go out and drop more coin for a re-released Daughtry CD. A totally new CD with new music...hell yeah, but a repackaged disc....NOPE.
