Dude...I'm not sure where you're hanging out, but I certainly don't see anyone screaming for Journey to "bring back Steve P". The petition hasn't made it's way to my desk. Maybe if you're hanging out at some over the top Perry fan site, you're seeing that shit, but you're not seeing it here. For me, Perry is the greatest singer I ever heard, period, end of story. Anytime you doubt that, pop in your 1981 concert DVD and watch Perry sing "Mother/Father", and you'll NEVER dare compare anyone to the guy again, because there is NOBODY out there who can touch that performance...NOBODY!

texafana wrote: All those concert goers, peeps buying the new CD, I doubt hardly anyone is going "bring back Steve" anymore. Journey has someone who doesn't have to worry about the comparisons, or not sounding good enough, looking good enough, etc, etc.

I really think you're missing the point. Don't you understand that any concert is a venue of captive audience members (i.e. they're there because they want to be there, not because they're on a prison furlough). Sure they're having fun and enjoying the music. What would be the point of going, otherwise? Also, you need to get over this whole "not looking good enough" stuff you keep spewing. I don't know about you, but I'm more inclined to be checking out the girl's rack next to me, than I am Arnel's moves or Perry's goofy self  One of these days you'll figure out that it's only chicks who bring up non-sensical (he doesn't look the right way for Journey bullshit). I hope to God that you're a chick. If not, than my concern is growing for you

texafana wrote: I'd be curious if you end up thinking to yourself "bring back Steve P" while enjoying the show.

There aren't many of us sitting around waiting for Perry to come back. I don't want Perry back, anymore than I want an IROC-Z28, Atari, or a VCR! It's 2008, not 1983, and most of us are okay with that. I can assure you that when I was sitting around watching the Celtics suck for the past 20 years (prior to this past season), I wasn't sitting around saying "Man, I wish they would bring Larry Bird back". I had no desire for them to bring Bird back, even though all their glory and honor left with him. Having said that, it certainly didn't diminish the ENORMOUS legacy of Larry Bird, because the Celtics moved on, after he retired. He still has all his championships, and Perry still has all of his brilliant music! The difference is that the Celtics have actually won a championship without Bird. Journey is A LONG way off from winning their "championship"!

What is this, six degrees of staying on topic?

The topic was "Steve Perry is washed up and forgotten" which translated into "texafana wtf are you smoking and did you bring enough for all of us." 3 pages later, texafana re-explained the initial intent and we're all good. And here come you two screwing it all up again talking about Frig's frijole.

Goodnight.

While true the new lead singer sounds great, and I will tell you more after tonight. However, the reason this job is available and the gigs continue is simply the masterful vocal ability shown by Steve Perry while establishing Journey as a powerhouse and a household name with hits a mile long. There would be no Journey 3, tours, new cd's, merchandising or any cash rolling in if they had not hired Mr Perry. His leadership is what helped the band grow and evolve and his greatness left a legacy that continues today. There is no need to compare. Without Steve there is no Journey 3. Without Journey 3, this young man would still be at home with no opportunity to showcase his obvious talents. All this again made possible by Steve Perry, his voice, his song writing and his direction.

I still do not understand the need to bash the different guys. I myself am glad they continue on and will be glad as long as they sound good! I wish all of those who contributed to the success of a band who has offered me so much pleasure for $10 bux a pop for albums, as many happy days as they have given me. Cranking the Journey since the early 80's to 2008 and on. I have seen them all and appreciate each for thir contribution and for my son being able to relate to what I loved as well!

I think it would help not to bash the past, and not to generalize. Don't make blanket statements about how everyone should feel about any subject. One thing you will find is on any subject there are varying oppinions. Feel free to let me know how that thing with the wasp nest goes, it probably would be less painful!

Nothing or no one will ever take away what Steve Perry has done for Journey and the influence he had on me, a male singer with a high voice. He showed that you didn't have to scream to sing rock and that you could go from harder songs to soft ballads. Steve Perry along with other tenors from the 80's, Russell Hitchcock, Dennis DeYoung, Brad Delp (RIP) and a few others are responsible for forming my voice and my taste and how I write songs. His legacy is there and when I listen to old Journey, it's almost sensory overload from the memories associated with that music.

However, in this new incarnation with the powerhouse vocalist, Arnel, I've got even more inspiration, first of all from a man who is about the same age as I am and still singing like a motherfucker, and from a re-energized band that's made me start buying CDs again and looking forward to new music from them.

I loved Steve Augeri's voice and thought he did a great job as a part of Journey, but can't say I was ever as excited about his voice as I am Arnel's.

I never thought JSS was the right fit for Journey. I loved his voice and his stuff with Soul Sirkus, but he never had that "Journey sound" that I love and while he is amazingly talented and a great front man, it's just how I felt and still feel.

Steve Perry was the voice that defined Journey. Arnel's voice is what has given Journey new life.

One more thing about Augeri and Perry. At times I couldn't tell the difference in Augeri's voice and Perry's, other than little words or phrases, but with Arnel, he sounds like Arnel with just enough Perry to make it perfect.

You're a singer and couldn't tell the difference between Augeri's voice and Perry's??? You're joking, right??? My wife (who knows ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about music) NEVER confuses those two voices! Sorry dude...you just lost ALL credibility with me. I don't think Arnel sounds like Perry either, but he's 1000% closer to emulating the sound than Augeri's weak and thin voice were! Augeri had a pleasant enough singing voice, when he was singing material that was written for his voice. I enjoyed "Arrival", immensely, and still do. That said, he was a disaster (sorry Augeri worshippers) on Perry material. He simply could NEVER, EVER, EVER sing in the range necessary, to sing Journey's back catalog (and I'm talking about long before he had the invasion of yeast monkeys on his throat)! I give Augeri a lot of credit for hanging in as long as he did, but anyone who has ever even sang Karaoke could hear Augeri struggling to hit a single high note. That doesn't make him a bad guy or even a bad singer. It simply means that he was attempting to sing material that he never should have been asked to sing! I honestly don't think you'll even find too many Augeri stalkers (at least the ones with two brain cells connected) who would tell you that they couldn't tell the difference between those two voices

For those of us who only remember being there with Mr. Perry and holding him dear to our hearts then that is fine as well. There is no comparison between the two other than they happen to sing some of the same songs! I enjoy Arnel, I think he is very talented and what a chance he is getting to be center stage with some talented musicians. Wow! Steve is not fading in the memories of all of the fans; he's still somewhere in our thoughts and in our hearts with lingering enchanted cherished memories of spectacular nights together! No denial of that! Although he is not on stage singing he is still close by never too far away always a treasure we will forever hold dear and keep alive in our thoughts.

Good thing there isn't any significant number of "new" fans then.
