Having said that, I'm looking forward to seeing Arnel with the band in a couple of weeks.

Yah...it's ridiculous..... All those concert goers, peeps buying the new CD, I doubt hardly anyone is going "bring back Steve" anymore. Journey has someone who doesn't have to worry about the comparisons, or not sounding good enough, looking good enough, etc, etc. Steve Perry's legacy fading? Hell No...but the desire (or need) to bring back SteveP with Journey? That might be finally fading.

"Having said that, I'm looking forward to seeing Arnel with the band in a couple of weeks.." - I'd be curious if you end up thinking to yourself "bring back Steve P" while enjoying the show.

This is EXACTLY what Forienger did with Kelly Hansen. They found a lead singer who brings the classic sound back to the band in a way that allows the band to move forward. Both Arnel and Kelly sound enough like their predecessors to do the classic material justice but each of them brings enough original talent to hold their own against the legacy singers, and that's why it works.

I think AP sounding so much like SMFP actually has the OPPOSITE effect. It reminds people of Perry that they wish he were back with the band!

You're a singer and couldn't tell the difference between Augeri's voice and Perry's??? You're joking, right??? My wife (who knows ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about music) NEVER confuses those two voices! Sorry dude...you just lost ALL credibility with me. I don't think Arnel sounds like Perry either, but he's 1000% closer to emulating the sound than Augeri's weak and thin voice were! Augeri had a pleasant enough singing voice, when he was singing material that was written for his voice. I enjoyed "Arrival", immensely, and still do. That said, he was a disaster (sorry Augeri worshippers) on Perry material. He simply could NEVER, EVER, EVER sing in the range necessary, to sing Journey's back catalog (and I'm talking about long before he had the invasion of yeast monkeys on his throat)! I give Augeri a lot of credit for hanging in as long as he did, but anyone who has ever even sang Karaoke could hear Augeri struggling to hit a single high note. That doesn't make him a bad guy or even a bad singer. It simply means that he was attempting to sing material that he never should have been asked to sing! I honestly don't think you'll even find too many Augeri stalkers (at least the ones with two brain cells connected) who would tell you that they couldn't tell the difference between those two voices

There were moments with Augeri's vocals where it was hard, especially with the first song they had from that soundtrack. Now I don't know why you think belittling someone is cool simply because they don't see or hear things as you do, but if that's what rocks your boat, keep on rowing baby.

Listen genius...I didn't "belittle" anyone. I simply said that in my opinion (which is what this board is all about...differing opinions), he simply had zero credibility if he truly couldn't tell the difference between Augeri's voice and Perry's voice. I stand by the comment. If some want to come in here and tell me that Augeri is the greatest singer ever (which some will and have), fine. I'll tell you that you're at least partially deaf, to believe that. Just don't tell me that Augeri sounded like Perry. Augeri didn't sound like Perry on the best night he ever had...even if it occurred on the worst night that Perry ever had! If you truly feel like this is "belittling", I'd suggest that you go whine to someone who gives a shit! Belittling enough for you, "rowing baby"?

We are all entitled to our own opinion(s) and mine is that Steve Perry will never fade away in the hearts and minds of his fans. He will always be THE voice of Journey - no matter how many other frontmen Journey has.

Thats what got me and many people here back into Journey. The band was dead before Steve A got on board.and he did a good Job. Perry wouldnt do it.,Then came Steve A.He sang 8 years. He must have done a good job over all.Im lookin at a ticket I paid $150.00 for and it says Journey. Not Heart or Cheap Trick. He maintanined the legacy .Its wierd, some people think Steve P still is in the band, or they heard about Steve A or Arnel .Steve A did a good Job or Journey would be lame. Arnel is carrying on and doing a kick ass Job.

Steve A never made you forget about Perry.
JSS never made you forget about Perry.

But Arnel, truly has enough vocal talent combined with stage energy to truely make you forget about Steve Perry. What I mean by that is, it finally looks like Journey has a "lead singer" again and not some hired hand. Even Steve A never looked or sounded as a good a fit with the band compared to Arnel in my opinion.

I was looking at some JSS videos with Journey, and (as good as he is) he just for some weird reason just doesn't "look" like someone who would be fronting Journey. I don't know if the physical look has something to do with it? Both SteveP and SteveA and Arnel are not the most masculine guys in the world, kind of a softer look about them, perhaps you need that high tenor voice with a softer look to make it click "hey...that's the Journey lead singer look". ? ? ?

I'm still blown away by how far Arnel has come in only a short period of time. I'm starting to wonder if Neal planned this a long time before it was announced. Secretly having Arnel work on the songs, etc, etc. ;)

And speaking of Perry, with his ego as large as it is, there is simply no way he would come back if he couldn't sing better than the current lead singer of Journey. And let's face it, at near 60 years old, he can't compete with Arnel. I feel sorry for him, because if he did have plans for a come back, they were probably shattered when he heard Arnel perform with Journey. :(

#EDIT.

Actually i've re-done my post, I read yours again. Conclusion is: It seems to me, you are probably disabled so I won't make any comments. And it's hard to tell sometimes, a lot us don't consider the source sometimes, and now after reading your post and considering the source, it apears you are either taking lots of medication, perhaps intoxicated? mostly likely have a disablity of some type, I don't know.

You're absolutely correct, Annie. It is absolutely nothing personal, on my end, at all! If someone makes it personal with me, I'll go after their jugular. Otherwise, I'm just here to amuse myself! As for my manner that "rubs people the wrong way"...That's my intent! I can tell you that I get no fewer than 5 PM's a week from people thanking me for telling someone off or just being a pain in the ass to someone. I've never come here to make friends, so I honestly don't care who I piss off  I honestly just sign on to be amused...not to shake hands and kiss babies. Message boards have never been about winning friends and influencing people, for me. I LOATHE all politicians, and will never pretend to be one, here or anywhere else! If I have an opinion, I express it. If someone doesn't like that opinion, they're free to chime in. I have a very fulfilling life, with a great family, friends, and a great business, so I just hang out here for some of the crazieness. I'm too busy to be following Journey around on the road and have no desire to. Again, I'm 38...not 18. I have more pressing issues in life than to attend 1980's concerts. I don't want my young son to think I've lost my mind, because I'm following a band from my childhood, from city to city, just because I "really like the music". I do enjoy the music, but take none of it seriously. Journey is as washed up as I am, at this point! The difference is that they're been washed up, a hell of a lot longer than I've been!

As for for Augeri fans over at Jackass Talk...you're absolutely correct that I went after them, and they all deserved it (at least the ones I went after). Most of those fans were a complete embarrassment to Journey and Steve Augeri! My targets over there were only the Augeri fans who had their heads up their ass. The endless threads about how groovy Augeri's "wiggle" was, were simply fucking nauseating!!!!!! The problem with that site is that there were endless pages of that bullshit, and the incompetent moderators on that site encouraged nothing but syrupy nonsense. As long as Drew keeps Tito in check, hopefully none of that nonsense will ever make its way over here! There were a handful of good people on Jackass Talk, but I simply couldn't take that place, so was forced to ban myself! That site never has and never will represent the true Journey fan. I've always felt like Journey should be completely embarrassed by their "official site" and the clown moderators who run it!

Yeah, the aliens would have to come down to earth and inject us with some sort of shit that erases our memory for that to ever happen.

Ever forget SP? The more I think about this thread, the more I realize that the dude that started this thread must be on some serious contraband.

Dude...I'm not sure where you're hanging out, but I certainly don't see anyone screaming for Journey to "bring back Steve P". The petition hasn't made it's way to my desk. Maybe if you're hanging out at some over the top Perry fan site, you're seeing that shit, but you're not seeing it here. For me, Perry is the greatest singer I ever heard, period, end of story. Anytime you doubt that, pop in your 1981 concert DVD and watch Perry sing "Mother/Father", and you'll NEVER dare compare anyone to the guy again, because there is NOBODY out there who can touch that performance...NOBODY!

texafana wrote: All those concert goers, peeps buying the new CD, I doubt hardly anyone is going "bring back Steve" anymore. Journey has someone who doesn't have to worry about the comparisons, or not sounding good enough, looking good enough, etc, etc.

I really think you're missing the point. Don't you understand that any concert is a venue of captive audience members (i.e. they're there because they want to be there, not because they're on a prison furlough). Sure they're having fun and enjoying the music. What would be the point of going, otherwise? Also, you need to get over this whole "not looking good enough" stuff you keep spewing. I don't know about you, but I'm more inclined to be checking out the girl's rack next to me, than I am Arnel's moves or Perry's goofy self  One of these days you'll figure out that it's only chicks who bring up non-sensical (he doesn't look the right way for Journey bullshit). I hope to God that you're a chick. If not, than my concern is growing for you

texafana wrote: I'd be curious if you end up thinking to yourself "bring back Steve P" while enjoying the show.

There aren't many of us sitting around waiting for Perry to come back. I don't want Perry back, anymore than I want an IROC-Z28, Atari, or a VCR! It's 2008, not 1983, and most of us are okay with that. I can assure you that when I was sitting around watching the Celtics suck for the past 20 years (prior to this past season), I wasn't sitting around saying "Man, I wish they would bring Larry Bird back". I had no desire for them to bring Bird back, even though all their glory and honor left with him. Having said that, it certainly didn't diminish the ENORMOUS legacy of Larry Bird, because the Celtics moved on, after he retired. He still has all his championships, and Perry still has all of his brilliant music! The difference is that the Celtics have actually won a championship without Bird. Journey is A LONG way off from winning their "championship"!

Until that stops (which isn't likely, unless Schon's youtube account gets canceled and he's then forced to retire), this band will never be out of the shadow of Perry. It's simply ASTONISHING to me that people say something like this, after leaving a concert with two new songs and the rest all Perry music! Not to mention, their "new" cd had all re-recorded Perry classics (in the event you didn't get that memo), and finally a DVD...of...you guessed it (see that...you're catching on)...99% Perry music! One final thing...Don't kid yourself. Arnel is ABSOLUTELY a "hired hand". The guy is immensely talented, but he is still in the band for one reason, and one reason only...his ability to bring Schon & Co closer to their "legacy sound" (Read...PERRY)!"

Between Andrew's post and this one, I'd say that almost 8) sums it up.
Any EINSTEIN that thinks Arnel is taking Perry's place needs to spend some time boning up on their Journey history before making shit up.

Perry wrote or co-wrote all the hits, except one, including developing every vocal part that all Journey's singers have copied to date. He didn't just write lyrics, he wrote the melodies that weave through the songs, GENIUS.

He also took Cain & Schon by the balls and showed them how to rocket ride to fame, fortune and the legacy they have tried relentlessly to trash in the past few years. Perry didn't just jump around on stage singing somebody else's songs. He had a huge hand in CREATING the Journey brand and catalog. That alone, without even mentioning his vocal talent, puts him MILES ahead of any Journey singer since his departure.

There is a real disservice done to Arnel when threads like this are started. He's a good singer and I wish him the best.....but Steve Perry he ain't. Get a grip, dude.

The bolded lines above are opinion, revisionist history, and bordering on absolute BS.
He did not write the lyrics on all the hits alone. He did not write the melodies to all the hits on his own.
If Perry was the sole reason for the "rocket ride" to fame, then why did "superstardom" not happen till Friga's arrival on the scene? (And I am not a huge Friga fan by the way).

Listen, I agree that Perry was an incredibly talented singer. In my opinion, he is the best singer Journey has had and one of the best of all time. But it is still opinion. Some here so love to trash on others opinions and try to back it up with their own opinions trying to be passed off as fact. Why does offense have to be taken when someone asks the question or opines on whether Perry's shadow is finally leaving the band.

Lastly, in my opinion, Perry's shadow was gone from the band along time ago for me. It is all about whether you are willing to let go or not.

I think the problem is people missunderstand that SP is the best vocalist for the music he had already did with Journey. Now the new stuff Journey is doing with AP... AP is the best vocalist for those. And the problems start when someone tries to apply AP to the previous SP work. IMO AP will never overshadow the music that SP did with Journey because SP is the best with that music, and on the same token, SP will never overshadow the music that AP is doing with Journey now. Though I could be wrong and SP may come out someday and sing some of the new songs by Journey and completely blow everyone away, but that has yet to happen and I do not think it ever will.
