OT: Lynch Unleashed!!!

Postby Rip Rokken » Sat Aug 30, 2008 12:44 pm

Just got in a batch of 6 Dokken discs today -- yes, I haven't owned the older ones in years, believe it or not, so I bought all the studio discs from Breaking The Chains thru Dysfunctional. Now, I remember being excited when Dysfunctional came out, because it was a 1995 reunion disc and their first studio album since Back For The Attack. I found later that it was actually a nearly completed Don Dokken solo disc that the label convinced him to let George play on and release as Dokken, so George came in, liked the new modern sound on the new tunes, and layed down the solos.

At the time, I was disappointed because it was a real departure from the signature sound, though not nearly as much so as the next disc Shadowlife... and overall, Dokken fans really dug the disc. Of course I found a few tunes I really liked, but overall, it just never really grew on me.

Well, tonight I popped it in for the first time since probably 1996, and with fresh ears it's really a great album! Killer song called "Long Way Home" that I remember digging very much at the time, which starts off with a Lynch riff that sounds like a modern version of "Mr. Scary", then kicks into the full song. Killer shredding by Lynch, and excellent vocals by Don, also featuring a "Middle Eastern" style in his singing after the solo. I actually found a video of this on YouTube that I hadn't seen before, and it's too cool...

One of the best live Dokken videos I've ever seen, and Fu Fu and Mimi will dig this....

Hell yeah, dude. I'd forgotten about that one.

"Beast From the East"...whaddya think about it?
But around town, it was well known...when they got home at night
Their fat and psychopathic wives
Would thrash them within inches of their lives!

Great album! I believe I heard that Lynch wasn't happy with any of his solos and rerecorded them all... But a great disc! I need to pop it in. I also have "Live From The Sun", and love the video. That version of "Alone Again" is one of my favorites, and I share that video regularly.

That's always been one of my favorite "live" albums.

I've been engrossed in "Back for the Attack" all week. I never really listened to the whole album before this point and after hearing the CD a bunch of times I'm really impressed with the album on the whole.

A couple great tracks that never got the attention they deserved: "Cry of the Gypsy" and "Lost Behind the Wall". Screaming guitars and great chanting choruses in both. Of course you also have the classics "Kiss of Death" and "Dream Warriors". Not to mention "Standing in the Shadows" with that great thumping bass. It's the last album to feature Don singing in a very high range - he really hits some impressive notes on a lot of the tracks. I now see why it was the band's highest charting album.

Weatherman, great songs and I was jamming on "So Many Tears" yesterday. BTW, DrFU said Lynch kicked it big time yesterday, and she'll have pics up soon.

Another great song..."so many tears...."....and now it's stuck in my head! Of course the lyrics are classic Don - the miserable love song.

Pollstar alerted me to a Dokken date in February 2009 - apparently they won't be taking much of a break!

Dude, we both MISSED OUT today!!! Dokken played today, and DrFU told me that near the end, Don's mic went out and he also had no working monitor, and threw a fit, calling it "Amateur Hour"... LOL! There is nothing more funny than seeing Don go off on the sound crew! Well, except for maybe the time he ran onstage and griped Jani Lane out for playing too long and cutting into Dokken's set...

Haha...those both would have been something to see! Did Lynch play with Dokken on one song like planned?

Maybe that's who Cain was talking about with the whole alcoholic thing. I would think Don was a member here too, seeing that his mug appears in every thread.

Shoot! I was literally about one question away from asking her that at least a couple of times, and kept forgetting to mention it... I heard nothing of it, though, but I did get 2 concert calls, and they sounded great! Fu was rocking out the front row against the fence!

Don's on the wagon these days (see 2 previous MR threads on this topic), but I do suspect he has some ownership stake in MR, and probably a controlling interest, which might explain Andrew's lack of enthusiasm for Dokken...

Could Andrew be Don's alter ego?
