Got a call from him this morning - no power or Internet, but they are fine and unscathed. Good news! He'll be back soon with more info.

So glad Altered DNA and family are ok.

Can you guys tell me about how you cope when you live in hurricane and earthquake zones?

Can you insure yourselves against damage or do the insurance companies refuse to cover you because you live in a high risk area?
And if they do cover you, are the insurance premiums sky high?

Ditto....DNA!!!!

Let me see if I can answer a couple of these questions, which pertain to Louisiana and Hurricane...
If you have a mortgage on your home and you live in a flood zone, you are REQUIRED to carry flood insurance.
If your property or zone has never been damaged or flooded the rates are very reasonable.
Once you experience a Katrina or even a Gustav and your home has received damage as a result, your rates
increase subtantially, but you are still required to carry the ins.
Some people pay more for flood insurance than they pay for their monthly P&I.
As for how they cope.... I deal with these people on a daily basis and some cope
rather well, part of life type attitude.... others's not well at all, it's very hard!!!
Don't know ANYTHING about earthquakes!!!

Thanks MG.
I just wondered. The UK isn't a quake or hurricane zone, but we did have bad flooding in the last couple of years and many insurance companies were refusing to insure people again after they had claimed for flood damage once. The Government stepped in and insurance cover was granted but the premiums were extortionate.

Don't know anything about earthquakes either, lol, but here in FL we have a separate hurricane deductible on our homeowner's insurance. Our premium isn't sky high, but that deductible could be pretty ouchy, lol.
