how did you get the assumption that most of those women were conservative voters? and how do you know Palin believes the world is only 6,100 years old, and that dinosaur bones are part of a massive hoax-conspiracy on the part of the scientific community?

the attacks on Palin would only leave an impression on how strong she is in the election campaign. sadly, the democrats made it too obvious by ganging up on her.

I don't think Obama actually meant to call her a pig. However, it's obvious from listening to his comments that he realized while he was saying it that it would be taken that way.

Once he heard the crowd's reaction, I'm sure he knew how it would be interpreted. He should have corrected it right then and there.

McCain criticized Democratic contenders for offering what he called costly universal health care proposals that require too much government regulation. While he said he had not studied Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton's health-care plan, he said it was "eerily reminiscent" of the failed plan she offered as first lady in the early 1990s.

"I think they put some lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig," he said of her proposal.

Would it be bad if McCain had said that in inference to Ms. Clinton?

McCain did use the term for Hillary's Health Care plan. Don't know what transpired from that remark. Lipstick on pig analogy has been around I think longer than Palin has been alive. 8)

I don't think you understand why this is being taken the way it is. Sarah Palin probably most famous line is "lipstick" being the difference between hockey moms and pitt bulls. If Obama had said this 2 weeks ago, it would be a non issue because there would be no connection between the 2 as there was no connection between lipstick jokes and Clinton when McCain made his comment.

Whatever Obama's INTENT was, once he saw his crowd screaming with laughter, he should have KNOWN he used the wrong words and corrected it so it would not be misunderstood.

The words "lipstick on a pig" are not funny by themselves, so no laughter when McCain said it. The reason the Obama audience found it funny was because of the inference to Sarah Palin. It's really not that hard to understand.

If he thinks his words are being twisted to manufacture phony outrage, how does he explain his own supporters giggling their assess of? What? Liptstick on a pig is THAT funny of a line? Give us a break.

After Obama Jab, Pig Lipstick Sales Surge
(2008-09-10) — Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s growing popularity has spawned a booming cottage industry in Palin-esque items from hockey jerseys to her distinctive frameless eyeglasses. Now, an allegedly off-hand remark by Democrat presidential nominee Barack Obama has sparked a run on another product, clearing the shelves of pig lipstick at farm stores across the nation
Yesterday, Sen. Obama mocked the McCain-Palin ticket’s “maverick” claim, at one point noting that “you can put lipstick on a pig, but it’s still a pig“. An explosion of laughter from his audience on the word ‘lipstick’ seemed to indicate that many people recalled the punchline of Gov. Palin’s convention joke about the difference between a hockey Mom and a pitbull, and thought he was ridiculing her.
The combination of Sen. Obama’s ability to mesmerize a crowd, and Gov. Palin’s endearing personality almost-instantaneously revived a once-moribund market in domestic animal beauty products.
So, while the debate over whether Sen. Obama meant the comment as a slap at Gov. Palin continues, at least one maker of cosmetics for horses, cows, sheep and pigs — Wisconsin-based Haybelline — is wallowing in record sales, not only of pig lipstick, but of porcine cosmetics in general.
“We’ve been flooded with calls from retailers,” said an unnamed Haybelline spokesman. “All of the lipstick in our Passionate Pigment line is just gone, and stores are dangerously low on stocks of other products like mascara, blush and our classic sparkling snoutliner.”
The Haybelline source said the “the timing couldn’t be better” because the firm is about to launch a complete line of beauty products for use on wild animals, slain by hunters, which appear in trophy photos.
“I just got off the phone with our plant manager,” he said, “I told him to go round the clock on production of Magnificent Moose Mousse. I just have a gut feeling this is going to be big.”

Yes, we know McCain has used it in the past. It's not that Obama used it but how it was used. The way he said it was "If you put lipstick on a pig..." {long pause followed by crowd laughter}..."It's still a pig". Subject: Recent examples of Palinese: language of the double standard

If you're a minority and you're selected for a job over more qualified candidates you're a 'token hire.'
If you're a conservative and you're selected for a job over more qualified candidates you're a 'game changer.'

If you grow up in Hawaii you're 'exotic.'
Grow up in Alaska eating moose burgers, you're the quintessential 'American story.'

Similarly, if you name you kid Barack you're 'unpatriotic.'
Name your kid Track, you're 'colorful.'

If you're a Democrat and you make a VP pick without fully vetting the individual you're 'reckless.'
A Republican who doesn't fully vet is a 'maverick.'

If you spend 3 years as a community organizer growing your
organization from a staff of 1 to 13 and your budget from $70,000 to $400,000, then become the first black President of the Harvard Law Review, create a voter registration drive that registers 150,000 new African Amerian voters, spend 12 years as a Constitutional Law professor, then spend nearly 8 more years as a State Senator representing a district with over 750,000 people, becoming chairman of the state Senate's Health and Human Services committee, then spend nearly 4 years in the United States Senate representing a state of nearly 13 million people, sponsoring 131 bills and serving
on the Foreign Affairs, Environment and Public Works and Veteran's Affairs committees, you are woefully inexperienced.

If you spend 4 years on the city council and 6 years as the mayor of a town with less than 7,000 people, then spend 20 months as the governor of a state with 650,000 people, you've got the most executive experience of anyone on either ticket, are the Commander in Chief of the Alaska military and are well qualified to lead the nation should you be called upon to do so because your state is the closest state to Russia.

If you are a Democratic male candidate who is popular with millions of people you are an 'arrogant celebrity'.
If you are a popular republican female candidate you are 'energizing the base'.

If you are a younger male candidate who thinks for himself
and makes his own decisions you are 'presumptuous'.

If you are an older male candidate who makes last minute decisions
you refuse to explain, you are a 'shoot from the hip' maverick.

If you are a candidate with a Harvard law degree you are 'an elitist 'out of touch' with the real America.
If you are a legacy (dad and granddad were admirals) graduate of Annapolis, with multiple disciplinary infractions you are a hero.

If you manage a multi-million dollar nationwide campaign, you are an 'empty suit'.
If you are a part time mayor of a town of 7000 people, you are an 'experienced executive'.

If you go to a south side Chicago church, your beliefs are 'extremist'.
If you believe in creationism and don't believe global warming is man made, you are 'strongly principled'.

If you're a black single mother of 4 who waits for 22 hours after her water breaks to seek medical attention, you're an irresponsible parent, endangering the life of your unborn child.
But if you're a white married mother who waits 22 hours, you're spunky.

If you're a 13-year-old Chelsea Clinton, the right-wing press calls you 'First dog.'
If you're a 17-year old pregnant unwed daughter of a Republican, the
right-wing press calls you 'beautiful' and 'courageous.'

If you kill an endangered species, you're an excellent hunter.
If you have an abortion you're not a Christian, you're a murderer ( forget about if it happened while being date raped)

If you teach abstinence only in sex education, you get teen parents.
If you teach responsible age appropriate sex education, including the proper use of birth control, you are eroding the fiber of society.

The problem with the clip is Barry's body language, which says far more than his words does.

He holds his hand to his head as if he's saying to himself " No Barack , dont say it , just dont say it ". But then he just cant resist.

Hes just like a man at a bar whos had a six pack of beer and decides hes gonna walk up to the girl at the next table next to him and out of the blue tell her shes got nice tits. He knows deep down inside he just shouldnt say it, everything inside is screaming at him that the girls boyfriend (a six foot five 270 lb biker) is gonna clock him, but the bud lights tellin him hes the ONE and he should fire away cos it would be kind a clever if he said it and lived to tell the tale.

let me use some fallacy here.

hockey mom wears lipstick.
Palin is a hockey mom.
Pig wears a lipstick.
therefore, hockey mom is a pig. (include Palin and all those housewives)

this is what people understood about what OBAMA was supposedly joking. it really does appear sexist.

Yes, we know McCain has used it in the past. It's not that Obama used it but how it was used. ... and went straight into the old fish is still smelly.

Palin - pig / McCain - smelly old fish

Two for one in a neatly wrapped paragraph. I'm not so sure he didn't intend the joke exactly as they're being taken. Maybe he hesitated about going forward with it.

I don't think McCain is so great but Obama's revealing to be less that what was touted before. I think there's more to Obama (in a bad way) than we've seen.

1. He doesn't pick Hilary to get Democratic women's support.
2. He refers to Palin as a pig (showing he's willing to call any woman a pig).

Where does he expect to get support? Maybe he doesn't want the job after all. It could be a calculated move to throw the election and make more money doing something else.

I don't know any prominent conservatives saying anything like this.

If you grow up in Hawaii you're 'exotic.'
Grow up in Alaska eating moose burgers, you're the quintessential 'American story.'

Non-issue.

Similarly, if you name you kid Barack you're 'unpatriotic.'
Name your kid Track, you're 'colorful.'

This one's just way out there. I haven't heard anyone saying anything about anyone being unpatriotic for naming a kid Barack. As far as Palin's children's names, they're ridiculous, but who really cares in the end?

If you're a Democrat and you make a VP pick without fully vetting the individual you're 'reckless.'
A Republican who doesn't fully vet is a 'maverick.'

Palin was fully vetted as were the other Republican candidates. This is a flat-out lie being floated by the left-wingers. One of the other VP candidates was on the air the other day telling about the comprehensive vetting he went through (can't remember if it was Bobby Jindall or what's-his-name from Minnesota).

That's all well and good but look at the state of Chicago and the political scene there and how horrible it STILL is. Contrast that to Alaska and the improvements they've made and then get back to me.

If you are a Democratic male candidate who is popular with millions of people you are an 'arrogant celebrity'.

His popularity and arrogance have nothing to do with one another. His arrogance has been displayed by his consistently referring to himself as President before he's even been elected, the Greek temple-like atmosphere of the stadium in Denver when he gave his speech, and other such displays.

If you are a younger male candidate who thinks for himself
and makes his own decisions you are 'presumptuous'.

See above.

If you are a candidate with a Harvard law degree you are 'an elitist 'out of touch' with the real America.

See above again...

If you are a legacy (dad and granddad were admirals) graduate of Annapolis, with multiple disciplinary infractions you are a hero.

No, he's an American hero because of what he endured and DID while he served his country.

If you manage a multi-million dollar nationwide campaign, you are an 'empty suit'.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't Obama have OTHER people in charge of his campaign?

If you are a part time mayor of a town of 7000 people, you are an 'experienced executive'.

Nice job leaving out the part about being a Governor of an important energy-producing state.

If you go to a south side Chicago church, your beliefs are 'extremist'.

This is getting rather laughable...It isn't because he went to a church on the south side of Chicago but that he ATTENDED IT FOR NEARLY TWENTY YEARS WHILE THE MINISTER OF THAT CHURCH UTTERED RACIST AND ANTI-AMERICAN COMMENTS FROM THE PULPIT ON A REGULAR BASIS. Of course, then he claims to not have ever heard any of those comments.

If you believe in creationism and don't believe global warming is man made, you are 'strongly principled'.

She does believe in creationism, however, she has never fought for it to be taught in schools, only that students that want to bring up the subject themselves in discussion should be allowed to do so. As far as global warming, some scientists are now beginning to say that we are headed into an era of global cooling. Go figure...

If you're a black single mother of 4 who waits for 22 hours after her water breaks to seek medical attention, you're an irresponsible parent, endangering the life of your unborn child.
But if you're a white married mother who waits 22 hours, you're spunky.

I haven't heard this argument before but it's still ridiculous.

If you're a 13-year-old Chelsea Clinton, the right-wing press calls you 'First dog.'
If you're a 17-year old pregnant unwed daughter of a Republican, the
right-wing press calls you 'beautiful' and 'courageous.'

Whoever called Chelsea Clinton a "First dog" is an ass. Regardless, it isn't being pregnant that makes Palin's daughter courageous, it's the fact that she's not running from it or having the child killed via abortion that makes her courageous as it would any other teenager in that position.

If you kill an endangered species, you're an excellent hunter.
If you have an abortion you're not a Christian, you're a murderer ( forget about if it happened while being date raped)

So now we're putting the killing of moose on par with an unborn child? Unbelievable!

If you teach abstinence only in sex education, you get teen parents.
If you teach responsible age appropriate sex education, including the proper use of birth control, you are eroding the fiber of society.

Palin is not against responsible age appropriate sex education.

Looks like swiss cheese to me.

Obama accuses McCain camp of lies, phony outrage

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama on Wednesday accused Republican John McCain's campaign of using "lies and phony outrage and Swift-boat politics" in claiming he used a sexist comment against vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin.
Calling it "the latest made-up controversy by the John McCain campaign," Obama responded to the Republicans' charge that he was referring to Palin when he used the phrase "lipstick on a pig" at a campaign stop Tuesday.

"I don't care what they say about me. But I love this country too much to let them take over another election with lies and phony outrage and Swift-boat politics. Enough is enough," he said.

Obama's reference was to the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, an outside group that in 2004 made unsubstantiated allegations about Democratic nominee John Kerry's decorated military record in Vietnam.

On Tuesday, Obama criticized McCain's economic policies as similar to those of President Bush, saying: "You can put lipstick on a pig ... it's still a pig. You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change. It's still going to stink after eight years."

The McCain campaign contended that the comments were directed at Palin, the GOP's first woman on a presidential ticket. In her acceptance speech last week, she had referred to herself in a joke about lipstick being the only difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull.

Accusing Obama of "smearing" Palin in "offensive and disgraceful" comments, the McCain campaign demanded an apology—though McCain himself used the folksy metaphor a few times last year, including once to describe Democratic Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's health care plan.

The McCain campaign on Wednesday issued an Internet ad that said Obama was talking about Palin and said of Obama: "Ready to lead? No. Ready to smear? Yes."

Obama began a discussion of education at a Norfolk high school on Wednesday by assailing McCain's campaign.

"What their campaign has done this morning is the same game that has made people sick and tired of politics in this country. They seize on an innocent remark, try to take it out of context, throw up an outrageous ad because they know that it's catnip for the news media," Obama said.

He's an arrogant ass and we are not stupid. If his own audience took it as a shot at Palin, how can he be SHOCKED that everyone else did too? What a marooon.

Yeah, sure...ok...whatever

You people have been searching for something to be outraged about for days. Now you're wallowing in it. How about letting them get back to discussing the issues?

Perfect example of why Obama is arrogant. His campaign is doing the exact same thing that he is accusing the McCain campaign of. It's fine if he wants to attack the McCain campaign for things he thinks they are stretching the truth on or taking out of context but he shouldn't be acting as if his own campaign is not doing the same.
