OT - Pirates of the Caribbean Movies

OK, Obviously from my avatar and location, I've become a *huge* fan of these movies.

I happen to love all three in varying degrees...but overall, I find the entire series to be simply captivating. One thing I love about these films, is that I can enjoy them with my son...first set of (non-animated) films I've ever watched with him where we both take something from the movies...and enjoy them heartily.

Well for blu-ray and high def audio fans, this series is as good as it gets. simply stunning
graphics and audio, the first and last are my favorite, the middle was to much on the
goofy side for me . I love these as well!

I'll keep these movies in mind when I get my blu ray player... but that probably won't be until Star Trek (2009 film) gets released. That's the cutoff date I'm setting myself. I'm guessing bluray is worth it?

First one had all the soul and creativity you’d expect from a movie based on a theme park ride.
Second one was surprisingly great- Robert Newton would be proud.
Fell asleep during the third one around the time the giant crab showed up...was assured by friends I didn't miss much.

Giant crab? I don't remember a giant crab...

Anyway, loved the first one. I think it's probably the best one of the three. Instant classic I thought.
The second one was okay for what it was... a way to get from the first one to the third one. It seems like the second in every epic trilogy is always the weakest.
Third one is definitely my favorite!!! Favorite scene is meeting of the Brethren Court and not just because of the Keith Richards cameo... although I was very amused by that too.

I'll put it this way, those are the only movies I will watch regardless of Keira Knightley.

I loved the third one, but it had a very star wars: new hope feel to it, meaning that it seemed lik it was designed to be a stand alone. The 2nd and third had a more 'there's more to this story than just this movie feel'

Regardless, I thought At World's End was simply fan-fucking-tastic. Better than the first 2 combined. More plot twists than a Tom Clancy novel...and well done.


Another thing to add, is that the soundtracks to both Dead Man's Chest and At World's End, were masterfully composed. I would put the At World's End soundtrack up against anything John Williams or David Arnold has ever done....In fact, that soundtrack gets played frequently by me....and I never listen to theatric soundtrack's straight through. This one is that good.

I remember reading an interview with Johnny Depp not long after the first movie was released, and he was talking about his family, basically why he & his wife were chosing to bring the kids up in France rather than the US. Anyway, he told the story he got back from his daughter's school as an example of how his kids weren't really old enough to understand what he does. They were having one of those 'what does your Daddy do?' sessions, and his five year old daughter told her teacher after a pause, "I think he's a pirate."

Why wait for Star Trek? The Blu-ray library is constantly expanding with new, and old, movies. Even your old DVD's may look better on Blu-ray. I only have a few so far:
At Worlds End
Transformers
Nightmare Before Christmas

I think each of them has been worth it...Especialy Nightmare Before Christmas.

Besides, if I am going to wait for a Trek movie, it's going to be Wrath of Kahn, or First Contact. The last few have not impressed me at all...

Well David Arnold hasn't really done much to be fair. Give me Jerry Goldsmith or Danny Elfman any day of the week.

David Arnold did the stargate motion picture soundtrack. "Mastadge Drag," which is the piece played during Daniel Jackson's drag to the villiage on Abidos, is literally used in hundreds of movie trailers since 1994. In fact, the same music was used for some trailers of movies in the same general time frame of release of the stargate motion picture. You might not recognize it as 'stargate' music....but if you heard it, you would *instantly* recognize it.

That puts David Arnold up there with the greats, like John Williams....in my book at least.


However, ans Zimmer's At World's End soundtrack is right up there with the greats. It's simply amazing...

However, having said that, his character input into Jack Sparrow is simply genius. If you read articles, you'll find out that Sparrow is mostly Johnny Depp's creation....Disney CEO at the time, Eisner, was a stones throw from pulling the plug on the first movie, because he though Sparrow was killing the movie. Depp held his ground...and created one of the most unique characters you could imagine, given the constraints of the movie.

I've never seen Charlie and Chocolate Factory, so can't say on that one. But have seen most of his other movies and I like that he's not your typical main stream box office actor. It depends. My wife and I watch alot of movies and really enjoy the surround sound and great
picture detail you get with high def , so for us its worth it, even standard dvd looks way better
with a good upconverting player.

Didn't say it was 'bad acting', or even that the movie was bad.

I'm just saying, unless you still think Michael Jackson is cool, his version of Wonka is definitely NOT cool.

Neither was his bit in Sleepy Hollow, or his vocal in Corpse Bride.

All of those are movies I 'like' on one level or another...but, Depp's character is not 'cool'.

As I said, it depends on the part he's playing.

I've read that she's retired from acting....(but that doesn't necessarily explain her involvement in an upcoming film).

As far as #4 is concerned, I've read that if a forth movie is done, it will likely omit both Knightly and Orlando Bloom, as the writers feel that their story arc has been woven shut....the next film is likely to focus on Jack Sparrow.

The likely understanding is that it will be Jack v. Hector, chasing after the Fountain of Youth....but I've read that the Fountain of Youth will likely be a story preamble for them chasing after Atlantis, or something to that Ilk.

It's all speculation anyway, as no one has agreed to do a #4 yet, including Bruckheimer himself.

They might all feel that Knightly and Bloom will be required for the success of a forth. So long as Knightly starts eating again, I would only agree with her...as she's quite yummy when she actually has meat on her bones. As for Orlando Bloom, I can do with out him on all levels...
