It's not even a case of not broke...which I agree with. It's a case of why try to recreate magic? You're destined to fail. I mean shit. Livin on a prayer is one of the best songs ever recorded by a band in the late 80s. Why Bon Jovi has tried to rerecord it 3 times, with dismal results, is beyond me. They should have learned in 94 (when they redid LOAP for the crossroads compilation) that trying to reinvent the wheel is a mistake.
I still think the retreads on Evolution are an embarassment. I love the 'live' feel of be good to yourself on the retread disc....but other than that one aspect, the rest of the disc is complete and utter shite. It should have never been done...and all it has done is carve in stone Arnel's inferiority to Steve Perry....a very unwise move by them. Pinoy pimps and apologists can argue left and right about their
assumption that Perry can't sing this material anymore and another
assumption that arnel today is better than Perry today...
However, the fact remains that by rerecording these songs for revelation, they've carved in stone a direct comparison between arnel today and perry of yesterday.....and that's like bringing an exacto knife to a 50 caliber machine gun fight...
