One wish, one CD.......

Postby Deb » Thu Sep 18, 2008 2:17 am

If you had one wish (and nothing was impossible  ) and you could only ever buy one cd ever again, what would it be?

Mine would be a Motown compilation cd/dvd of Perry, Martin, Soto. I've heard bits of Perry singing Marvin Gaye's Sexual Healing, Soto singing Jackson Five's I'll Be There and Martin singing Stop In the Name of Love. And would love to hear more from those 3 in that genre....whether it be covers or original material. YES it's all about the soul and delivery.

 And if they need female backup vocals, get that gal who sang backup on Eddie Money's song Take Me Home Tonight. I think her name's Ronnie.

That's not asking for too much now is it?!

Debbie's onto something with the Journey CD with everybody on it. SP, Gregg, Smitty, current guys, random guys, old guys. A big jam sesh.

Of course, if anything is possible, I'd also like to have an album of SRV, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, and John Mayer jamming the eff out. Something really bluesy... "The Sky is Crying" meets "Blue on Black" meets "Slow Dancing in a Burning Room". Damn.

I agree completely, I don't want to waste a wish on a cd, but I might as well, as Brad Pitt has already hooked up with my other wish...............

 Sorry, the genie said it had to be a CD and the "wish" was you could make it whatever you wanted.

As far as general wishes go, looks like your wish has hooked up with my wish.

If Perry's awful rendition of Stand By Me was any indication of his Motown prowess, I'll take a pass. At least he was a master of his genre, though. The other two need to do that before they even consider tackling something as tough as Motown...shit, I'm not sure even Perry could do Motown. Mimicing Jackie Wilson's runs doesn't qualify one as a Motown singer. Steve should stick to what he does best...AOR/soft rock/rock. Besides, Deb, I'll Be There is a pop soul song...not Motown. And Sexual Healing is a gay 80's song along the same order (soul pop). Again, not Motown. But I get your point. 8)

Anything by SP. Wouldn't matter what genre but the Motown idea is very intriguing. 8)

That makes absolutely no sense? :? They have to master a genre before they can attempt to sing motown? Huh? Both of them are heavily motown influenced and you can tell, I've also heard them sing motown/soul and they excell at it IMO. Soul has alot to do with feeling the song and vocal delivery. Sure I may get soul and motown mixed up.....same difference to me....whatever. This one oozes soul in my opinion. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4W3NKWXIiVE

BTW, thanks for clarifying your definitions of pop, soul, motown......in regards to my wish cd.  :)

Wait a minute, I'll be There was a Motown produced song sung by the Jackson 5 if I remember correctly. And Sexual Healing sung by Marvin Gaye is definitely a Motown song. You can call it Soul Singing or however you wish to phrase it ; Motown was still the machine behind the songs.

lol...I don't think anyone would argue that Sexual Healing and I'll Be There are Motown(except you apparently!!! ). In fact, I'd venture to guess that the people that made Motown, Motown, would be quite insulted!!!

The youtube was a very nice vocal but nowhere near Motown material.

This is Motown at its finest (granted no one could sing like this dude so the example is a bit unfair!!!). And arguably Perry's biggest influence. You can hear some of what Perry copied in this song...and there aint a damn thing wrong with that!!! 8)

I hear a helluva lot more Jackie Wilson in Steve Perry than I do Sam Cooke. No one could match the smoothness and distinct delivery of Sam's voice...not even Perry. Perry did however match Jackie's power...and that's saying a lot!!! I can hear the Sam influence, Phyllis...just not as much as JW. :)
