Can a person ever grow out of a band or genre of music?

Postby S2M » Fri Sep 19, 2008 6:02 am

I remember 'falling in love' with KISS back in '76. It was an initial draw to the album art....I, of course listened to the albums, ad nauseum til 'Revenge', but at that point (and honestly, well before that) the music started getting stale....I'm sure you can revisit a certain group after a sizable break, but I've never really had the urge to listen to them again; its been 16 years. I've also been that way with most of the Funk stuff I grew up on as well....Lately, I've been on this kick where I remember all those neat AM songs that I heard in the car with my mom while she was driving....Its been a challenge to find them...

Anywhoo....just figured I'd ask a question....

just asking...

just saying...

YUP.
I can remember liking a lot of things when I was younger (some of them favorites of folks here). As I got older, it was like "God, this music is so.... WHITE". I couldn't listen to it any longer and quit buying records by a few bands that I was very into.

What's weird is that there are some bands that I NEVER get tired of.

I used to love Gloria Estefan and Latin stuff when I was dating a hot cuban american girl who loved her too.

When that girl left me I invited Gloria to "come on baby come and do the conga, straight outta my life and music collection"

I really hate some of the pop stuff now that I used to listen to back in the 80s. I can't believe I used to like some of that garbage.

I miss some of the 80s cheese pop. But looks like it serves a purpose to this day! Even in current affairs.

guess it depends on what age you were when you fell in love with the music...

loved Journey and especially Steve Perry from the very start, but of course I was older when I fell in love.

Will last forever , now.!!!!!!   :D :D :D

That's funny. Obviously you probably don't like the vid that went with that song right? Interesting cause I happened across the vid a few days ago, and it was the first time I actually watched it since 87'/88'. Back then, the vid didn't seem too fucked up. Watching it a few days ago for the first time in 20 years, I don't recall it stinking so badly. I guess they had to put in the video some bitches just so it wasn't all completely gay. But that still didn't work.

I used to like that song too, I was living in Japan at the time of it's release. We'd all go out dancing up in Tokyo and when that song would come on, we'd get all happy and shit out on the dance floor with our JN chicks.

I actually thought I was getting there with Journey...especially two years ago. I rarely listen to the old stuff anymore. It takes a specific mood.

I know part of it is age, but I don't listen to the "heavy metal" much anymore wither. the stuff I grew up with is cool but I don't seek it out either. And the new stuff....mostly I like the music but not the vocals.

If you are talking specific bands/artists....yeah, I am pretty sure there many of those as well.

By the way, I outgrew NKOTB when I was six. And, uh... I really like the new album. Well, the minimum requirement of "I like 4 songs therefore I can constitute owning this". I also went through genre phases like crazy up until high school when I finally realized there wasn't much of any kind of music that I couldn't find at least something good about... classic rock, metal, alternative, bluegrass, pop, jazz, blues, rap, hip hop, I've even been known to listen to some trance once in a very blue moon.
