I heard it last night close to 8PM...Thought Uncle Joe said, "Steve Perry's voice is the best it's ever been."

I hate it when DJs say crap like that. If Steve is in great voice, then FAN-BLOODY-TASTIC and YIPEE!!!!!!!! I can't wait.

But please...don't say (and this goes for ALL artists) that a veteren of the industry for so long can sound better now than they did in their 20s and 30s.

Am I wrong, or just having a grouchy day?

PS. Bring on ANY new Perry material.

That's what I heard Uncle Joe say...
words were either

voice is better than ever or best it's ever been.

I wasn't too fond of the very young voice of Steve Perry
It was nails on chalkboard high & had a sort of feminine quality.
I even thought he was a woman on some really early stuff.
Sorry, but it's true.

I've also heard him sing in the lower range back in the journey days
& it was a thrilling sound...really resonated!

His voice could have matured & it could be better.
Were not talking about high notes
A good voice is not just about hitting high notes.

He could have a very good voice but now in a lower range.

It was a 2 for Tuesday & a little earlier
Anyway You Want it & Don't Stop Believin were played earlier but
Nothing was said after it so I don't know what it was in reference to.

To tell you the truth I feel
he might be up to something big
whatever it is I hope its a success
even if it's just a new outlook in life.
I hope we all learn to embrace the self of today & not grieve for the one of days gone by!

Hey folks, didn't mean to add fuel to the fire, but just to confirm....that's what I heard Uncle Joe say.

I thought I may have missed some recent news that the cat was out of the bag and it was public knowledge that he's releasing something.

I must say, as I was driving and listening to him mention SP like this and say he was looking forward to what he had planned (or something to that degree) I felt 19 again, anticipating a new Perry release.

Obviously I won't believe anything till I have a new release in my hands.

Cheers,

Chad

I've heard he might be part of a high profile duet...but news of a new solo project remains ever elusive.

Have there been any other recent spurts of continued rumors about a possible Perry release? I only heard of the post by Laura regarding a demo…and some others saying they are supposedly writing with Perry.

I think Uncle Joe is on the payroll!

Hey, I thought I was the designated bullhorn around here. Just ask Dan.

lol...that is a Strangegrey coined term!!! I simply found the term wildly amusing. And there's nothing wrong with being Perry's bullhorn. It's a job I'd kill for.

This my friends is the slow chug a lug of Perry's pr train starting up... I have been very observant of his voice when he speaks, laughs etc in interviews over the last 10 year because you could hear that something was wrong in his voice.. I have to say after hearing this interview that the horrible rattle that accompanied his every laugh is gone somehow and his voice is way less raspy. I have speculated this in my mind for a long time and I believe it to be true. He had a vocal condition (nodes probably) as he kind of alluded in an interview where he said something like, " you have this thing in your throat that is as neurotic as you are so you dont know what kind of voice you have until you go out there and sing". SOmething like that... I think he had it removed or received therapy...

There are a lot of new techniques for repairing the cords these days thanks to laser treatments and just plain better medical technology.. I think Steve got his cords fixed up... That scratchy Bruno the mobster rasp is gone and it has been there for at least 10 years or more...

I believe Perry got motivated in some sense by Journey's new success. I'm sure that the re-records also chapped his ass. And I think LD is right in that he did have some sort of procedure about a year or so ago. Good for him. I think his announcement in 6 weeks or so is going to be pretty fucking huge!!! :)

Scar on his neck ?? From what I know they never do vocal operations that way. Its always down the throat... I could be wrong... I never noticed a scar but I was never looking for one either...

Can he really be blamed for that, though? That whole disc was just not necessary.

Wildfire- I noticed that too and was concerned but think maybe it was just a, ah, wrinkle of sorts??? I hope. I've never heard of throat surgeries being done from outside either. They will "clean out" a carotid artery from the outside but they don't operate on nodes that way. Just my humble opinion. God forbid that happened to him, I'm just sayin'...

Perry was working on this long before Arnel joined Journey or Revelation was even a glimmer in Friga's frock. Perry doesn't work on anybody's schedule or motivation but his own, judging history. But, yeah...the re-records chapped his ass, no doubt. He was in the studio before Journey sold their souls (and re-records) to Walmart, though.

Your past predictions on Perry's announcements haven't been close, so don't put a hex on it by predicting this one, SJ.

Journey re-recording Journey songs seems pretty logical to me. I've never heard Fleiscman bitch once about Can Do, Wheel In The Sky and several other songs being roped from under him. No silly "children" analogies from Robert. Perry's got to understand that his time with Journey is cemented in our minds and hearts and can't be tarnished, stained or changed. You simply can't reverse history. If anything, he altered his own legacy by taking long periods off and not wanting to discuss why it was that he didn't/couldn't perform any longer. That said, he still remains the greatest voice of all-time...in a landlslide to these ears.

I can't disagree with anything you stated. i didn't mean Perry's sole purpose for coming back and working on stuff was Journey's success lately, but rather that it simply motivated him more. And yes, my predictions have sucked more than Richard Simmons in a gay bar.

That's a different thing though. Those were never put to vinyl with his pipes and that band never had any kind of success with him. You hear Wheel in the Sky you immediately go "Perry!" A lot of people love to bust on him and blame him for this or that but the solid fact is we wouldn't even be sitting here discussing this on a Journey board and there never would have been anything for them to re-record in the first place had Perry not arrived to, as you say, cement those songs into our minds. :D

I look at it differently. Journey re-recording Journey didn't make any sense to me. Hell, any band doing that doesn't make sense to me. It was fine the first time, leave it alone, you got a new guy, so move on with NEW stuff.

Actually, I change the channel. I think the recorded version of that song sucks. Sounds too feminine.

Pure speculation. Herbie would have found someone to make them successful...probably just not as successful. Hey, if I told you in 1996 that in 2008 Journey would be fronted by a Filipino singer and that they'd have a Platinum album (3 or 4 more weeks for those of you that are counting  ) and would be embarking on a 5 continent world tour you would have looked at me like I had dicks hanging out of my ears. Strange things happen when people are motivated and want to succeed. Herbie would have found someone. As good as Perry? No, but they would have made it work. Shit, he made Mr. Big and Roxette good, and both of those acts had more #1 hits than Journey.

I'm sure your graduation picture from high school "was fine the first time", but if someone said "Hey, here's $10,000 put your cap and gown back on and let's re-shoot it" you would!!!

Sh*t, server is slow as heck at work, can't get to any of the media links people have been posting. Will have to catch up with all the latest news at home tonight.

Can Do was not written pre-Perry.... SP wrote it with Ross. SJ might be referring to Winds of March. It was started with RF, and SP finished it. WITS is the only J song with SP singing lead that he did not have at least co-writing credit. The song was all written prior to SP, but I believe he ad libbed the "my,my,my" and high note over Neal's solo in the recorded version.

Speculation has been out there (off and on) since 2006 regarding SP working on something. That was when he first told the gals at PV at the WOF that he was working with a vocal coach and practicing scales. Other clues have emerged during interviews, collaboration with peers, statements from friends/musicians in the business that he was ready to come back. As always, we all hope and pray that we get to hear something (new) from him, eventually. Nobody is getting younger.
