So, guys, tell me....

What are your favorite FUNK artists, and some good songs/albums to start with for someone looking to get into Funk?

JSS ~ Love Parade cd

Couldn't find Love Parade song on youtube. You'll find a lot of funk in his catalogue. A couple covers.......

Take You Higher http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QqDwh-O27PE

And anything with JSS & Marco Mendoza always = great funk IMO. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kEe3llSWx4g

Early 80's Prince is hard to beat.

Old school stuff too, like Ohio Players, Confunkshon, Bootsy's Rubber band, Parliment/Funkadelic, Fatback,Zapp, etc...

You got to be kidding Deb. Prog asked for Funk artists. Prog. checkout Parliament/Funkadelic (George Clinton), The Commodores are 2 off the top of my head.

The second album by Funkiphino - Rise Above is a great funk record. Great energy and the album has a 'live' organic feel.

Disagree, have you heard the song "James Brown" off of Soul Sirkus' World Play.......if that's not a funky little number, I don't know what is?

But hey, I think he's got a lot of funk and soul.......and you don't, it's all good. :)

Deb my dear Prog asked for Funk artist. Jeff is not a funk artist. Yes I heard James Brown and it's a little more soul than funky but like I said he is not a funk artist.
Yes Jeff does have some funk and soul but again that does not make him a funk artist :D By the way I know I have funk in me. :D Do you???

Louis Johnson. I first heard him LONG before I even knew his name from Michael Jackson's "Off the Wall" album when I was like 6 or 7 from the song "Get on the Floor".....here is the breakdown of that:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HwCzTo20d18

Hell, I could credit that whole album as my first intro to funk. I later found more funky badasses, but I'm pretty sure Louis Johnson was the first.

And here's a few more clips, just because.....

Awesome band thanks Fish. Chili Peppers early works were produced by George Clinton ( the godfather of funk) in Detroit Clintons home town and also Chad Smith the drummer.
Prog you have a lot of Funk fans who know the FUNK. These are FUNK artists not singers trying to be funky

Sweet, thanks for all the suggestions and PMs.

I've been meaning to broaden my horizons a bit more lately and I like the one true funk album I have (Mothership Connection [oh yeah got a few from RHCP too]), and figured I'd explore it a little more.

These lists will be keeping me busy awhile... THANKS!

No thank you Prog. it brought back memories. It's funny how some people do not know what Funk is, they think a singer is funk because of a couple songs. Or they mistake soul with funk  James Brown is the godfather of soul and Clinton is the godfather of FUNK.
