Ides of March Report from Dickinson (9-20-08)

There aren't many bands touring today whose history dates back to the 1960s, but The Ides of March is one of those rare groups. The Ides had an incredibly full sound and the vocal harmonies on songs like "L.A. Goodbye" were simply fantastic. The entire show was unforgettable and the music is truly timeless.

The band played for nearly two hours and from beginning to end it was a very energetic performance of one of the most diverse set lists you could possibly imagine. Spanning five decades, it included the band's first hit from 1966, the vocal-driven "You Wouldn't Listen", all the way up to 2006 with "Live Life", the first track on Jim's solo album titled Above the Storm. Keeping with the high energy feel, Jim dove right into the crowd during one of his guitar solos and brought the show up close to everyone in the audience.

Jim's guitar collection was also a sight to see, and he also gave us the story behind the Survivor mega-hit "Eye of the Tiger", by re-enacting his phone call from Sylvester Stallone, turning his boot into an over-sized cell phone.

It was so much fun to meet the band and it was a time I won't soon forget. Chuck Soumar, the band's trumpet player, actually found my concert blog before the date of the show and he made sure that I was able to meet the band before the show started. It was a lot of fun to talk all things melodic rock with Jim and one of the first things he asked me was if I knew about Andrew. They are some of the nicest guys you will ever meet.

The Ides are a true gem in the world of touring bands, and you really have to see one of their shows if you haven't already.
