I really dig the first two PEARL JAM albums (after those, not so much) and, if you;d count them in that category, the Foo Fighters have a shit load of good music! (particularly the COLOUR AND THE SHAPE album)

Alice in Chains was superbly talented. Jar of Flies was an incredible album. Cantrell and Staley harmonized together so well. PJ and Soundgarden were good as well, but their catalogue doesn't move me quite like AiC's does.

Smashing Pumpkins will always hold a special place for me, even though I don't listen much anymore. That summer that Mellon Collie was out I must have been in 5th or 6th grade, and it was just all over MTV. My friends and i used to listen to that shit non-stop. On that note, the Asian rhythm guitarist from the Pumpkins put out a solo album "Let It Come Down" in the late 90s or early 00s. BEAUTIFUL, stripped back pop-rock. Beatlesesque, lots of 12 string guitars, acoustics, and harmonies. Look it up on iTunes.

STP was great too - too bad you can count on Weiland being a complete wreck. Nothing will come of this reunion.

Grunge gets a bad name for ruining guitar solos and what not, but those guys were still soloing - even Cobain soloed here and there. They just tended to be simplistic. Cantrell can seriously play, Corgan and Iha did some whacked out shit, and the DeLeo on guitar for STP had some great riffs and solos.

"Alternative" is a pretty open genre, but the likes of Disturbed and Staind are definitely nu-metal. Generally not a big fan of those groups. The detuned guitars sound like mush and the vocals are talentless for the most part. A nice downtuned riffer here and there is great, I love prog metal/power metal/old school heavy metal, but I don't want to go through an entire album of nearly indistinguishable 7-string chords and compressed rhythms.

Grunge marked a significant change in music because, IMO, it brought
emotion and some truth back that had been missing. Gone were the slick,
over-polished "rock" songs with singers that sounded like their balls were locked
in a vice, being replaced by a more stripped-down sound with "singers" that
communicated through growls, howls and unintelligible garble at times.

I listen to music from this genre still today and I look at most of my favorite frontmen of that time
more as "storytellers" than "singers". Vedder can be down right horrible and off-key but
he conveys so much emotion and conviction in his delivery; he was believable. Same goes for
the likes of Cobain, Layne, Corogan, Lannigan, Cornell, Andrew Wood... They were/are "singers"
in the vein of Springsteen, Dylan and Young.

The idea that grunge "killed the guitar solo" is ridiculous. Sure, there were no VH-Tapping
marathons and the song structures weren't cut & paste like 99% of "rock" from the 80's
(intro, verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, guitar solo, chorus, outro...), but guitarists
like McCready, Cantrell, Coragon, Iha, Deleo & Thayil (just to name a few) could still spit
out monster runs; solos that added more to the "emotion" than they did to just show off.

But again, this is all just IMO. :lol:

Grunge/alternative sucks. It ruined music for a decade. And there is a reason the classic rock bands are still the ones touring and successful.

However it was an inevitable turn against the glam metal rock that was happenin' round the time. Poison, Cinderella, Ratt etc. I rather wear flannel than makeup.

I never did get grunge rock. Most of the music seemed to me to be monotonous and leaden, the vocals were pretty much unintelligible, and even when you could make out what they were singing it was either meaningless or pretentious. And most of the people in those bands looked like they literally just stepped out of bed after a skinful the night before. That’s not what I want to see and hear on stage.

Music in my opinion is mainly entertainment. Sure, there’s a place for political or social commentary, if it’s done well, but not for depression and angst forced down people’s throats for song after song after song.

I actually was just watching the Unplugged performance (you can get the CD+DVD at Wal-Mart for like 10 bucks or something...) a couple nights ago. Such a good performance. It's haunting to see Layne there... he must have been 95 something pounds. The guy was so fucked up by this point. But still, anyone who thinks grunge is talentless ought to watch before making sweeping declarations about grunge being "talentless" across the board. The band is tight and Jerry and Layne sing so well together.
