What is Steve Perry's best vocal performance?

Postby SusieP » Sat Oct 04, 2008 3:21 am

On a forum in the UK where SP isn't that widely known, they are having a discussion on the best male voice.
Of course I think it is SP and I will post some YouTube clips to back up my choice - but I just wondered what everyone else's choices would be.
Just curious.

Winds of March. Period. End of discussion.

"One More Time" is RIGHT behind it.
But around town, it was well known...when they got home at night
Their fat and psychopathic wives
Would thrash them within inches of their lives!

this is the best question and to me it's a song where he is singing with the original band and he is looking like he's having the best time. he is not responsible for anything other than to sing along and be on tune; not be the lead or nailing it; just having a great time. i think those are the best when he's not having to be sexy or sing the best or emote intensely or anything; just have fun and sing to his heart's desire. it's a well known band and he's back up and i can 't remember the song or the band but he's smiling and having a grand time! nobody including the other members of the band expect him to be anybody other than himself.

I LOVE that song!!! Its a great "alone" song and extremely moody but SP just flexes his voice in it and proves why he is Steve Perry and I am not.

I have it on the compilation I play in the car all the time.

There's a little high note he does near the end, and I wait for it all through the song. And even though I must have heard the song a gazillion times, I still get a tiny thrill when I hear him.

It's hard convincing these kids who have been raised on modern tat though that this is what a singer should sound like.

Hey, I like that song! Perfect for curling up in front of a fire with a glass of good scotch on a cold rainy day...
Why treat life as a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving in an attractive & well-preserved body? Get there by skidding in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand, chocolate in the other, body totally worn out, screaming WOOHOO! What a ride!

The only saving grace for ROR. I like how how he slowly brings the volume up throughout the song culminating in the wailing at the end.

this feline loves nothing better than sitting with the windows open during a pouring rain - soft wind running thru.

And pouring out in the background is Mr. P's voice on "It's just the rain".

Oh just sit back and close your eyes

i enjoy his voice i just don't particularily enjoy it when he's trying to be Steve Perry; I like it so much more when he can be "Joe" with a voice and having a smile. If i can find that video I'll put it up but for now...it's somewhere on YouTube.

it's one of my favorites too. i especially love the end of the song where steve pauses slightly before the third "falling," then neal echos those notes about 20 seconds later - devastatingly beautiful.

In a landslide..."Mother Father" from the 1981 Houston concert! In my opinion, it's the absolute best live performance by a vocalist I've ever heard in my life. The performance is almost too exceptional to have been live. That was Perry at his absolute finest!
