Journey 2008 Tour Highlights--Fans' Point of View

Postby DrFU » Sun Oct 05, 2008 6:29 am

Revelation Tour 2008 closes (so far as we know) tomorrow night in Nevada. For those of you who have seen a Journey show anywhere this year, what are the highlights that you'll remember?

I've been to 8 shows; to get us started here are three at the top of my list:

1) Opening night in Denver, Arnel bounding out on stage, clear-eyed, clear-voiced and belting the hell out of Never Walk Away;
2) Houston, broiling in the heat, singing every note from the front row and watching whomper-jawed as Mimi motioned Arnel over to tie his shoe; and
3) The wind wienie. This one's an inside joke that explanation wouldn't do justice to, but it's been a long, long time since I laughed so hard I couldn't breathe. Short version is a bunch of MRers in a car on the way to the Dallas show acting spontaneously insane.

Oh, and curmudgeons and crackpots, please start your own thread for lowlights if you just have to ...

My favorite part of this tour was getting to see Journey early on, at the Las Vegas show in March. Getting to see them film the DVD, and seeing them redo two songs that didn't come out right. More importantly was getting to see some really cool people from here I had met before and meeting others I hadn't. Those that couldn't make it were certainly missed.

Then to see the progress the band had made at the show in Dallas in July. The difference was incredible. The show in Dallas rivaled the shows I saw with Perry in '81 and '83 The energy, the music and the magic were all there again, finally. And again getting to see and hang out with some great MR folks, as brief as it was.

Was just a great year to be a Journey fan.

In no particular order:

-The Heart bar in March. Too much shit happened there to even list. What a fun night!

-Meeting Dean, Lula and Wyatt for the first time and the big dinner party the 10 or so of us had.

-Vegas part II. Though the usual suspects weren't there I was able to party with Gayle and Tony and a bunch of people from the official board. And though I'm missing a few hours, what I do remember was a lot of fun!!! Plus I won a shitload of money.

-Dallas. Too many inside jokes and "you had to be there" moments to explain. The "wind wienie" and Rip Rokken throwing a t-shirt onstage to Arnel stick out. As does riding a 4 wheeler bombed out of my mind at 3 in the morning.   The piano bar with Gayle, Tony and Jen was a blast, too!!!

-Charlotte. Getting hammered with G.I. Jim, meeting scarygirl, DerriD and 7 Wishes (albeit briefly!!!) First time I drank moonshine in about 10 years. I'll wait another 10, thank you very much!!!

-Cleveland. Where do I start. It was the ultimate 20+ person meet up. I think the pictures posted here spoke for themselves. And that was only the stuff you could see.

-Chicago. More of a personal memory. I was lucky enough to be invited to Arnel's personal meet and greet and shake hands with him and Jon Cain. It was nice to meet the man that has single handedly re-energized Journey and put them back on the map.

-New York. Best show, hands down. Best concert I've ever been to.

Awe.......y'all are making me all teary eyed over here!!!!! :(

This past summer was AMAZING.....and yes, Journey was a huge part of that.

I still stand by the fact that the people I have met through this board are second to none, and are the real reason I keep coming back. The get togethers for the shows are unparalled. Thanks to Andrew for supplying this place for us to gather, and thanks to Journey for providing the reason we all met in the first place!!!

And I have to agree....the Wind Weinie will NEVER be equaled!!!! :D

yeah. the wind wienie. try watching your grandchildren play with it with a straight face.

the best part was having 2 great bands OPEN for Journey. And the fact that it made Journey the headliners. as they should be.

fav part? what's today. I know I know-live in the present moment.

being in the RoSs ZoNe in Dallas. HI BARB!! :P showing RoSs my Infinity bracelet and telling him it is my fav. Really? he sez. uh huh. 8)

FINALLY being able to see Deen over the kit-for 2 shows!!-- and to sing the harmonies and choruses with him. and my special moments with him at the ILAA party.

catching Jon's eye and singing wth him too in Dallas.

Arnel's shoe. oh dear. and an opportunity to witness a truly gifted vocalist in eh....um...MOTION!! hehe I cried like a baby at all 3 shows when Arnel sang AATY. absolutely stunning.

the concert calls from shows I wasn't at.

sitting back a ways at Dallas and getting to see the whole show.

The gang at GAYLE'S and TONY'S!! what a blast. thanks mr and mrs txfirefighter. :D

The road trip with DrFU. you make everything more fun. cuz if it ain't fun, eff it!

oh and going to the beach during the hurricane the day before the San Antonio show. :D

By New York I suppose you mean Jones Beach? Having only been to that show, what made the show so exceptional in regards to the others?

No. I was referring to The New York State Fair show. The sound was incredible, the weather was perfect and I was in the front row. The sound at that particular show was head and shoulders above the rest.

Same here. This year I was only able to catch 1 show but had an awesome time. :)
The band was amazing, the people I met were great and of course who can forget hanging out with Deen and Ross in the bar.
That was priceless to me. 8)

--It all started in March. --VEGAS.-- First encounter with MR folks. Was excited to be there and excited to meet up and put faces to the names that run MR. I would of never thought in 2 million years that a large bunch of MR's would hit it off the way we all did in Vegas. RIGHT OFF THE GET-GO. We talked and approached each other like we have known the person for years. Getting kicked out of the bar was one thing, but meeting up with great people made the trip a success. And, of course, the addition of ARNEL to Journey really left it's mark starting with that one night. They did not disappoint and that left MR's to have the best times of their lives afterwords.

-- Scranton, Ohio. Even though we didn't meet up with any MR's on this trip, it was one to remember. Being there with my brother, nephew, and girlfriend made it so special that I can't begin to explain in words. It quickly turned VERY special since I first witnessed my first show up-front, AND being captured on the big screen with my chicka's ' during the song that began our relationship- Faithfully. It showed up on you-tube thanks to the very kind and friendly people over on AP's website. THANKS GUYS! and Thanks to the Pinoy's behind us who made the night that much better. It's awesome to see Pinoy's come out and support Arnel, makes him feel at home. Something I hope we all can do in the next years to come!

--Last, but not least. CLEVELAND. WOW. Remember when I said words can't explain my feelings? Lets ditto that X5. Amazing trip while meeting back up with the AMAZING people from Vegas...and even MORe amazing for meeting new friends from MR. Did this trip top Vegas in March? I don't know, but it sure can be mentioned in the same sentence! Can't wait to do it again, folks. It's been a pleasure.

And last but not least... thank you to Neal Schon, Jonathan Cain, Ross Valory, Deen Castronovo, and ARNEL PINEDA for giving us such wonderful memories. You guys are the engine and we are truly blessed that the band is back in full force.

THANK YOU, JOURNEY!
