I don't care if George Michael is gay, he could flat out sing back in the day.

Somebody to love

The thread title is misleading. With some of the comments on youtube, Arnel is the second coming.

For my 5 penneth worth i have to add the following:

David Coverdale (up to the early 80's particularly had a very emotive baritone that could scream with the best of em - nice return to form with Coverdale and Page in 92)
Geoff Tate - Albums up to Operation Mindcrime show some stellar pipes
Glenn Hughes - Often over sings live but he has possibly one of the best voices around (even now)
Eva Cassidy - Nothing special in the range department but captivating emotion.
Jorn Lande - Not the best lyricist but as a Rock voice this man has a seriously good one.

Here's what I wrote to begin the thread (since you were too fucking lazy to read the intitial post!!! ):

In the shoutbox on his official site the topic turned to the greatest singers of all-time and he threw out a few names. Granted, these are off of the top of his head so let's not crucify the guy if you think he omitted someone. Interesting list:

Robert Plant
Steve Perry
Bono
Dio
Whitney Houston
Karen Carpenter
Ann Wilson
Robin Zander

Of the 8 people he mentioned I think only Perry, Houston and Wilson had truly "special" voices. Dio remains an unbelievable singer and Zander is still incredibly strong live. I've never cared for Plant or Bono, and honestly don't know enough about Karen Carpenter to comment. However, Tito and I were at a party this weekend with some people from Arnel's official board and they sang a few karaoke Carpenter's songs and I really liked them. Might have to check out their/her catalog a bit closer.

brywool wrote:As for ROCK Chicks- It's ALWAYS been Ann. Never Benatar, Slick, Joplin, and especially Nicks. They SUCK compared to Ann.
Ann is the consumate woman ROCK vocalist.

Zander is just cool. Great screamer voice.

You can talk smack about Slick, Joplin and Nicks all you want, but Pat Benatar WAILS! Power, range, tone, emotion.

She might not have the "screamability" that Ann Wilson has, but Benatar was a hell of a rock vocalist. Listen to "Hell is for Children" and get back to me.

I wouldn't. He's great, but there's nothing in his body work that makes people go "wow."

This is no joke, but JSS has a very strong tenor voice too, not in the area of Journey legacy sound (Perry) but a pure, powerful voice that is pleasant to the ear and not overwhelming or strained.

As far as JSS belonging on that list, highly subjective.

Not to sane people it's not. That's just like me saying that it's "highly subjective" as to whether or not John Wayne Gacy should have won The Nobel Peace Prize.

Don't let him fool you. He loves Soto. He just likes to argue.

I have no problem with Soto. He's never done anything to me. In fact, if he had more fans like me (realistic) while he was in Journey, he might still have the gig. I think his fans played a large part in him being ousted. A successful and iconic band simply can't tour around with a herd of freeloaders. I don't think management liked that so they did what they had to do. Soto couldn't say no...management could.

Ouch! Not that I am one, but that is one serious accusation even if it's in the past.
