Journey Caricature

Postby MartyMoffatt » Wed Oct 08, 2008 11:10 pm

My brother Jonathan is a recently converted Journey fan, and we took him along to the UK Journey convention at the weekend. Knowing it was for charity, he decided to do something to contribute to the charity auction, and came up with a caricature of the band he created on his PC.

I thought you might like to see the image Jonathan produced. I can’t remember who bid for it, but they now have a stunning image to put on their wall.

I'm sure Ross will be thrilled with that most flattering depiction of him

Yeah i recall this. I held it and was gonna bid on it, but didn't in the end.
It was pretty cool though.

Enjoyable convention again, but the auction prizes were not that special this time around, and of course Babs was there again, so no one else got a look in, when it came to bidding on anything. :(

Oh, and 'Joon' were absolutely terrible, almost as laughable as 'Essential Journey'

Ross is well known for not liking conventional photos of himself. That's why he pulls faces on stage, and why he only chooses the photos where he's pulling faces for his website etc. I'm sure he would have no problem with it.

I thought Joon were not bad. They are a young band who happen to like and play classic rock. They were NOT a Journey tribute band, by any means, and the Journey songs they did cover were altered to add their own personality into the songs. Anybody expecting a note for note reproduction of the entire Journey catalogue may have been disappointed, but that’s not what we asked them for. At the end of the day it was a charity event and they were doing us a favour by providing some live music to add to the recorded music we’d been playing all day. The Journey songs they played they’d learnt especially for the convention.

Most of the auction items comprised signed memorabilia or pictures. Had the attendance figures been a lot higher we could have justified some bigger prizes. Last year the top prize was a trip with the band to soundcheck and a show. We couldn’t do the same this year because the band have finished their UK tour. Bear in mind that all those prizes were donated, many by the organizers themselves, who were already working their butts off for free, or were donated by people with direct connections to the band. The top prize this year was still pretty cool – a guitar strap donated by Neal and signed especially for the convention by the whole band. This was a guitar strap he wore on the UK tour and one that he had custom made for him.

It would have been nice to see a more even distribution of winning bids, I agree. Babs outbid everybody for the items she wanted. However, as I said it was a charity event and as far as I’m concerned I’d be happy for her to win every item if it meant more coffers for the charity.

Despite there not being as many there as we’d hoped, we raised over £1,700 (about $3,000) which is better than a kick in the teeth.

Marty, that is an excelent caracature. I am more of a realist, and I admire someones ability to capture the essence of an individual that way. Was it hand done, air brush, photoshop? What was the medium used to make it?

I'm not sure what software he uses but it usually takes him about 3-4 evenings of work to produce a single caricature. He used to do them all by hand and he's a great artist, but now does it on a PC.
