You hit the two songs exactly, both ballads, both big hits here in 1981 and 1983. But I got a feeling songs like Stone in Love, Only the young, Ask the Lonely, etc. aren't known that well because they're not ballads. Anyway I like to over analyze everything so don't take me to seriously. Maybe Journey can do all ballads at Manila, that would be cool. Still they ride, Patiently, Why can't this night go on forever, Stay Awhile, Mother, Father. That would be a treat to see all these songs at one show. :D

Advice for Journey band members. If you are to visit the Philippines and the president invites you to her place to have breakfast, don't turn her down- unless you want yourselves to be beaten up and forced back to your plane.
Just ask Paul and Ringo.

If they tried to get past that, they could get arrested. That's how strict security is at the Nonoy Aquino International Aiport (NAIA) in Manila is. Once outside the barricades, he would have been mobbed if he were not protected by bodyguards and former bandmates. I'm sure his arrival was unannounced. If it were, there would have been thousands at the airport. Filipino fans can be shy and at other times respectful of their idols. You can not measure how much Filipinos love rock and Arnel from this scenario at the airport.

I've flown in there a ton of times with Filipino Idols so I'm pretty sure I know what I'm talking about. If there were large groups waiting outside, the cameras would have been there. Even us Gringo's knew when he was going to arrive, no big secret there. I'm not slighting Arnel in the least. I'm saying he is better known and appreciated here than there because of Journey and it's fan base, not the short term fan base that just arrived with Arnel and couldn't name five songs from any album before Arnel joined the group. We see Arnel as a part of Journey, not a hero or superstar but part of a great group that cemented it's legacy between the years of 1981 and 1983 and have been paying tribute to that era for the last 25 years.

But if Arnel came in with Ross, Neal, Jon and Deen, it's guaranteed pandemonium at the airport!

Could be, could be.

Since he arrived at 5:30 am maybe the fans were still asleep. :)

That's why the crowd couldn't be seen. He must have said "Excuse me while I whip this out."

Ballad over rock?

I think it's a predisposition due to nature. Borrowing someone's words, "A hot climate requires of the individual quiet and rest, just as cold incites to labor and action."

Yeah, and Faithfully is the king of "Jeepney" ballads in the Philippines :P

Who are we blaming here for the taste in music of the Filipinos? Before the time of You Tube and the Internet, their only source of music, pop or rock were radios, which in turn were on the "payolas" of local record companies to give specific songs and artists airplay. I worked at the A& R department of a record company there so I know. So with Journey songs, or that of other artists, its popularity depends on which song the local record distributors will pick to promote.
